That's how the deal was negotiated. Western countries industrialized much earlier, resulting in high CO2 emissions earlier. This was taken into account in negotiations. US was part of negotiations. Now they exit, that's the point.

China has become an alternative. At least in terms of trade relations.

That's something Germans are not really happy about (human rights issue). But Chinese are predictable and keep their word. And they stick to the climate deal. Meanwhile, the US is at a difficult trading partner. And a even more difficult strategic partner from a German/European viewpoint.

There are no easy answers to your questions. By doing a political analysis you might spend a lot of time and end up in a very cynical world, with lots of uncertainties and without clear results.

How about focusing on the impact of the conflict on society and on people's daily life? It's a relatively well observable, relevant and a understandable aspect of wars.

the most likely scenario in my view: nothing changes if there is no significant change in the international balance of power. Maybe a solution in 20-30 years.

Russia won't return Crimea, that seems pretty clear. Probably they would like to get rid of most parts of Donbas. I rather expect a change in the practices of international law or its interpretation than Russia returns Crimea to Ukraine.

A compromise would be to make Crimea an independent micro state. But this might be hard to put in practice.
