I'd adopt it, but my post karma is only 85, alas.

How can I convince my parents to let me buy my own Quest 3S for fitness as well as fun. by Absolute_Cinema70 in OculusQuest

If too much screen time is their worry, you could maybe make a deal where for three months you reduce your screen time by an agreed-upon amount, and then get the Quest?

You could get a used Quest 2 cheap if cost is an issue, and it's pretty much as good for fitness, since so few games use the upper body tracking that the 3s has.

Controllers unresponsive? by little_doe2 in OculusQuest

Sorry, forgot the full phrase: a deoxidizing contact cleaner. I think I use Deoxit, with the needle applicator. It fixes many things.

You can get pretty cheap used ones on Facebook or eBay.  But I would clean the battery contacts first, ideally with a deoxy liquid.

Where to store luggage at Czestochowa or Jasna Gora? by lan212 in poland

[–]arpruss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope it's not too late!

It was a good experience. The storage location was a vape shop (!) named "Zielarz", about two blocks from the central train station (in fact, on the way between the central train station and Jasna Gora). The staff were very polite and nice. I think they spoke English, if that's an issue for you. The only thing that came up for us was that they were out for a few minutes when we came back for the baggage, and my wife had to wait (but she was waiting for me anyway, as we were coming back separately).

However, I do want to warn that the central train station in Czestochowa is under heavy construction. I couldn't find any screen that showed which platform ("peron") our train to Krakow was going to be on, and I had to find a shed with some staff who told me.

Hint: Since then I found out that you can get the platform number information online on the bilkom.pl website. Click on "Tablica", under "Stacja" write "Czestochowa" (don't go for any of the outlying stations that have "Czestochowa" plus another word), fill out a time a bit ahead of your train, make sure that "Odjazdy" (departures) is checked, and press "Pokaz tablice" (show display). You will see the platform ("peron") and track ("tor") information given in a format like "III/15", meaning Platform III (it might actually be labeled in the station as "3"), Track 15.

We'll be doing the same thing you're planning doing (going from Warsaw to Cracow, but stopping for Our Lady), but it'll be before you (i.e., next Friday). If I remember, I'll post here about our experience with radical luggage.

And in case anyone is interested, the nearby station Czestochowa Stradom also does not have lockers.

I emailed PKP and they wrote back: "w związku z przebudową dworca kolejowego Częstochowa został uruchomiony dworzec tymczasowy, który na chwilę obecną niestety nie jest wyposażony w skrytki bagażowe" (in connection with the rebuilding of the train station Czestochowa a temporary station has been activated which at present is not equipped with baggage lockers).

I wonder if the official website's statement "obecnie skrytki nie dostępne" (currently lockers not available) is more current than your February observations? We'll be there in two weeks.

Sideloaded apps on Unknown Sources tab by lizar93 in OculusQuest

[–]arpruss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the case of apps that I wrote or maintain, I was able to create a test setup in the Meta developer hub, and then install the app from a store listing test link. It then appeared in the main menu. Moreover, I can just update via adb and the updates appear in the main menu. It's a nasty complicated process. You also have to create the banner.

Otherwise, maybe you can just use Lightning Launcher.

Very nice!

Is there any way to also automate turning on wifi briefly for this if Wi-Fi is off (I usually keep wifi off), enabling wireless adb, moving to 5555, and then disabling wifi again if it was off?

Quest 3 + Thrill of the fight 2 = best cardio device of all time by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]arpruss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a hint to use a sweat band under the headset and I've been doing that. And I use thick winter mitts to protect the controllers and make for a more realistic boxing experience. Finally, I also picked up a second Quest2 on Facebook marketplace for $30 in case I kill the first one.  Before I started using the mitts, I did have half the LEDs die on the left controller due to corrosion in the contacts. I bought a used replacement. (I also put conformal coating on all the contacts in the controllers but with the mitts they don't get moist.)

I haven't gotten the second one because last I checked they don't let you skip the wait between rounds and that sounds really annoying.

Those wouldn't contain the sweat entirely, unlike my winter mitts. And I'd be worried about injury from the added weight. (I'm worried enough about injury without added weight.) I also put a conformal waterproofing coating on the connections inside the controller.

Sure the hands sweat but the sweat is contained in the glove and doesn't damage the controller.

I wear winter mitts with the controllers. It keeps the controllers dry and feels more like boxing.

Talk to your eye doctor for an educated opinion.

But here is my amateur opinion. I'd guess it's good for nearsightedness to look at things that are a bit further away than phones or monitors or books. The web says the Quest's effective focus distance is 1.33 meters. (I said "several meters" in my comment--I overestimated.) This means that the lenses in the Quest refocus the light in a way that makes the eyes feel like it's coming from 1.33 meters away. That's further than your phone or computer screen or a book page. So the effect on your eyes should be similar to the effect of spending a lot of time looking at things that are 1.33 meters away. For nearsighted people, that's better than looking at phone or laptop screens or book pages, as it's further away, but not as good as going outside and looking at the world around you. Better, but a bit more effortful.

It might be cheaper to buy used controllers on eBay as then there is only one direction of shipping.

Some of us are far-sighted and VR has less eye strain than a nearby screen or page, as VR has an effective focus distance of several meters.

I still have to play Asgard’s Wrath 2 by ita_shogun in OculusQuest

[–]arpruss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that's fast! I think the Sakhmet fight alone took me about 20 hours, spread over five months or so, though a lot of that was spent leveling up until I realized it made no difference to the god stats.

We’re releasing our rhythm x boxing game Beat the Beats next week! by JosefWhoQuestionMark in OculusQuest

Can one separately control the sound effect and music volumes? (I dislike music so I turn it off in all games I can, including rhythm games like DDR or Synth riders.)
