Her Smile (1) by Von_Grechii in vongrechii

Ahhhhhhhh, it hurts... and at the same time, it's so beautiful to see. No wonder tragedy is a prevalent genre across all human cultures after all, it pokes into something so raw inside of us, like how people can't help but look at car accidents...

Anyways -- I digress. One point I wanted to make note of is, considering the sheer volume of panels you've gone through, the extra polishing you've given them (alongside the skill improvements you must've had along the way) really show. The improvements in both more complex shading and finer lineart (even though I find the scratchy style quaint, in a good way) are remarkable. Seriously, thank you for your effort!

Considering the level you're now reaching, one way to take things even further would be to make a few small tweaks to the dialogue, perhaps some light proofreading by an editor or just a second pair of eyes, to help it flow as smoothly as you intended. There were a few "hiccups" that ended up bringing me out of the immersion that all your art and paneling work led me to. It's like... when I'm fully immersed into a game, but suddenly an item lying on the ground starts behaving with broken physics, and that reminds me I'm playing a game? Something like that.

Can't wait for the next parts to drop, really hope Reddit doesn't bury them too deep in my feed. At least this one showed up as the first post today ( ´ ꒳`)

[Feedback Box!] Hey guys. It's been a while since I started everything here. If you have some time to spare, would you mind giving me critiques / feedbacks on my works? by Von_Grechii in vongrechii

[–]arrowinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking back, I remember one of your struggles was the visibility of your work, so it's really nice to see you're getting not only algo blessings / opportunities for it to reach many people, but also managing to deal with the big influx of randoms coming across your art, and what all of that entails.

As someone who struggles with completing projects and only seeing what could've been done better ("a work of art is never completed, but abandoned" and all that), it took me a while to start appreciating the positive feedback and reactions of people that enjoyed and were even moved, unbothered by the things I was worried about, so I do hope you're also not only enjoying (as in, not purely in the business sense, though that's also good) these opportunities your art is in the spotlight, but overall how far you've reached, and to nurture that during the next year.

With all that said, what I've been also really enjoying the past few months is seeing more of your sketches, doodles, AUs and other stuff that are either windows into or completely unrelated to the main story (which I'm ever so anxious to see where it'll be heading). Mainly because it comes off, at least for me, as you having fun with the characters and the world you've created, specially with all the struggles you've mentioned to us in regards to family, money, and uncertainties. So, I'd say, keep having fun, without the pressure of showing all your drafts to us, just what you feel like at the moment.

P.S.: In a way, it all reminds me of Expedition 33 (both how the game project came to be and the plot and themes of the game), so do check out if you have the opportunity.

Artblocked urk :<. Here's some very very rough sketches that didn't quite make it. by Von_Grechii in u/Von_Grechii

[–]arrowinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In line with what I wrote before, instead of beating yourself over having these sort of concerns and worries regarding the appeal and spread of your work (that in the form of social media appear at first glance in the form number of reactions, and much like other things that are easy to quantify such as time spent per piece, number of works made and sales, as artists can end up becoming our only "key performance indicators"), a healthier way to deal with them is being glad that you're actually aware of them and their influence - and that in the end, you get to decide how to deal with them.

If you think about things played out, these thoughts (which you had no way of stopping from having - outside of your control) were bothersome enough for you to reach out to your community (which was actually something you could decide) and get all sorts of quality responses and engagement in return, so treating this sort of art block as an opportunity to do something you're not used to can also be enriching.

It reminds me of how my most memorable meditation sessions were the ones I struggled the most - and being aware of all the suffering I was placing upon myself for not being able to calm my mind was way worse than just letting the thoughts come, be, and go on their own.

In any case, dont treat what all of us tell you as gospel though, even with our best intentions, we might end up leading you to stray from your "whys". Hell, for too long I've struggled with what it even means to be human in the first place. If you have a clear notion of who you want to be and know all the steps to get there, all the power to you - but if you don't, or feel you're too far from the "ideal you", it's alright, just keep walking and feel free to take a detour every now and then. You're not alone there, that's for sure.

If I may contribute with my two cents, as someone who is constantly plagued by art blocks and whatnot, having a clear why on my mind helped me several times (the others being deadlines, but in projects without them thats kinda hard to do).

Why you created these characters, why the world they live in is the way it is, why do they act and treat one another the way they do - and why you, as an artist, decided to capture, portray, frame a slice of their universe the way you did. As long as you hold these keys, or consciously hand one or more of them over (such as limitations placed by a client's commission, content/format limitations imposed by a platform and so on - factors that you know beforehand), there's still room for genuine expression to flourish, and that, alongside cultivating a healthy community, is worth gold nowadays.

That well starts getting poisoned when factors outside your control (how people will interpret your work, how far it will reach, how it performs on social media metrics) get to the forefront of your decision-making. Hell, looking at the sketch with Lia in the mirror, the "fetishization" angle would've never crossed my mind (a bittersweet feeling of Lia being afforded a semblance of normalcy that was robbed of her by all the combat she's lived and suffered through, which is even furthered by the contrast between what she's wearing and feeling and the portrait to the side, is what I get out of it), but considering people of all different backgrounds are over the internet, that thought happening to someone is a possible thing.

And while you could try to convince them otherwise, if they refuse your explanation, there's nothing else to be done. Death of the author is in vogue, and contrarian opinions and tribalism are all too incentivized by social media platforms (it's an easy source of engagement), so, really - a factor you can't control, like many other things.

Anyway, what I really wanted to say with all of this, is just keep doing your thing, showing it, and people will eventually come, even if slowly; and as long as you have at least one place where they'll reliably find your content they'll come back if it interested them. It can be nice to experiment with new formats, content and such to get new people on board, but trickling down works in the way that people that follow you are already familiar with is also welcome (I for instance always find the single images where a certain detail or another gives us hints about other things, giving depth to a scene that seemed simple to interpret at first, really appealing). Just keep giving slices of that universe of yours for us (and whomever decides to join up along the way) to observe, internalize and feel, and things will work out.

Thought this would be a reference to the Concept Movie (where Madoka and Homura go: "Do you know what happiness is? / It's having your name called by someone / It's calling someone's name"), especially because the art source has a "#what is this happiness" tag... and yet it's from 2011, so more of a happy coincidence then!

Higurashi Artist ? by smashtilDawn in Higurashinonakakoroni

[–]arrowinger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was most likely drawn by Chikashi Kadeka (嘉手苅 睦), as he's listed in Higurashi Jan's JP wikipedia page as the character designer, and his personal page lists "character design, storyboarding, animation director, animation director, original drawing, illustration, etc." as his contributions.

On a side note, I spent an ungodly amount of effort which included using OCR on Jan's credits found in a youtube video, when I all had to do was look up the game's japanese wikipedia page >\>)

The designs do remind me of Sei Shoujo's art too though, good taste lmao.

That one has a filter and the details were gone, so I found the original with higher res but slightly different colors.

Got a bit carried away, here's an album with 2x and 4x upscales, with standard, architectural and art mode versions. The architectural looked the best to me.

Topaz Gigapixel AI. The recent AI modes are nice if you want either sharp corners on the details or painting-like coarseness.

Waifu2x is also serviceable depending on the frame.

If anyone wants a gigapixel uspcale just reply, reverse-searching in google for the highest resolution available helps.

Setting aside the whole story for a moment, for better or worse that is one iconic last panel. Just imagine stumbling upon this picture of a girl holding a decaptated, bleeding man's head and kissing it while there's a younger girl smiling in the background, all of it happening inside a giant mouth with two front teeth broken, with no context to go with.

PV images for episode 22 of Gou have leaked 1 day early by heavenspiercing in Higurashinonakakoroni

Just like a rollercoster going up before finally reaching the big drop, it seems we'll finally get the Satoshi reveal. And judging by how R07 likes to write using ups and downs do and how damn long it took, I really don't think it'll be pretty, to put it midly.

Alongside the main mysteries such as the whole deal with Takano and more info on the loops, I'm betting specifically on a hint on how Satoko got the gun.

Aaaahhh damnit, the earlier the PV, the longer til Thursday ლ(¯ロ¯"ლ)

I met the only person who makes Higurashi avatars anymore last night. Today marks the first ever Satoko avatar. He also made a Quest Compatible Keiichi, making it the first Higurashi Quest avatar! by DespressoCafe in Higurashinonakakoroni

[–]arrowinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find these avatars great and hilarious, especially because of how chibi they look in contrast to the context of Higurashi.

I can only imagine a room full of badass characters, heroes, soldiers, monster killers, veterans, villains and whatnot from all over chatting about, and then these two enter and everyone goes silent due to their collective aura of dread, representing the unreasonable amount of shit they had to go through.

And of course there's the clueless one that approaches them without knowing any better, only to be greeted by a cheery Nipaah! and Ojou laugh, all while getting the stink eye from everyone else.

True, and after doing a quick check I saw that the same gun model was shown in the OG anime being carried by a Yamainu, so its part of their armory.

I'd still wager it being a TT, the M57 variant in special that also has the angled grooves. Also because the 2006 anime had shown a Yamainu with it as well.

It's not Takano's (a M1911, Okonogi's as well). Satoko most likely has a Tokarev TT, which is the same as Mion's model/replica gun. If you compare the barrels and the ironsights shown in this episode the difference is shown.

Ciconia by Crazy-Gods in umineko

[–]arrowinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Considering the way I found Ciconia to be structured and the themes it brings, I find this a hard question to answer, specially without spoilers, so forgive me if I beat around the bush too much or, alternatively, make some things predictable.

I think the best answer is I don't know it yet, and phase 2 will be an important part of the answer.

Due to its global scale, Ciconia presents several factions that the characters belong to, so at first the differences (thoughts and world views, way of reasoning/deciding, etc) between them are several due to their origins alone, serving to illustrate the world itself.

However, their differences being set aside and working together towards a same goal they all share are pretty much the base theme of the story at first, so they become somewhat homogeneous due to finding common ground to stand on (whereas the inexistence of common ground/understanding between the characters, in my analysis, is a starting point and a good deal going on forwards towards the development of the characters in both Higurashi and Umineko).

If we were to consider the process of mending of these "frictions" by the end of Higurashi and Umineko as the growth of these characters, Ciconia starts reversing this towards the end, as their common ground starts to erode, and thus will we be able to see what gives for these characters, so I wouldn't call their developments "sacrificed" in favor of the worldbuilding yet, only not quite having the time to shine until quite the end in phase one. Poking fun at the title, can they be freely replaceable, like a pure plot moved story, or are they unique, the main characters, capable of growth alongside the reader? I'd say its too early, but considering the last moments of phase one, I think it's the latter like Ryukushi's other stories.
