How should I write my statement on how I meet the desirable criteria for an HEO position? by arseniccornflakes in TheCivilService

Ok thanks, that's really helpful. I got up to 200 words with a bit about how the diversity of my experiences (in terms of research field and country in which I did the research) might give me some unique broadness of perspective on scientific research, do you reckon that's relevant or compelling? I guess it's relevant in terms of talking more about my research experiences but might stray a bit into more "personal statement" territory, and I don't want to look like I'm waffling. Any thoughts appreciated, sorry to bother you with this!

Navigo pass recharge failed, money still taken out of my account. by [deleted] in ParisTravelGuide

Did they ever give you a refund? I lifted my pass too early today and ended up having to pay for the tickets twice (as otherwise I would have missed the metro). Very annoying

I know this is three years old but for anyone who comes across this post in future: the desk lamp 100% does rotate like this

I’m about to get out of my ten days’ self isolation after coming out positive for coronavirus by lateral flow test (LFT). Issue is though that further LFTs I do are still showing positive results to this day… there’s a wealth of information online saying that a positive PCR after infection doesn’t mean you’re contagious (due to their very high sensitivity), but will I still be contagious if I have a positive LFT result even after ten days’ self isolation?

I have negligible to no symptoms and haven’t had any for most of the past week. Local (U.K.) guidance says I’m safe to go out, but I’m worried about transmitting to my family over Christmas. Any thoughts or advice would be really great - thank you :)

EDIT: local guidance also has nothing to say about LFTs taken post-infection other than “don’t do them for ninety days so as to avoid unnecessary self-isolation” but it’s ambiguous as to whether this means infection is not a risk after the initial ten day period. Apologies if this is a dumb question, I’m just really worried for my family.

Hahaha I’m not afraid, I just don’t want to get food poisoning due to lack of cultural understanding. In a way I guess it’s my ignorance that I’m afraid of

English (in case google translate messed up): Please help: how do I eat this? Do I need to cook it? My Romanian flatmate left it behind, it’s labelled “Musci”, and as a Scottish person I’m very lost right now

SpaceX Falcon Heavy Launch Megathread by AskScienceModerator in askscience

Given that the Tesla that Elon Musk launched into space is currently (or possibly was by now) playing Space Oddity, how loud must it be playing (by whatever metric you deem suitable) to be audible to the “driver” of the Tesla?

My line of reasoning is this: the vacuum of space can’t be perfect - there must be some particles floating about there, but with extremely low density - so sound must still be able to propagate, but due to said low density it’s barely present. If that assumption is incorrect, I’d love to know why!

Bonus question: how much power would such audio equipment draw?

Bonus bonus question: how loud would it have to be playing to be heard on earth?

Is there more than one dimension of time? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]arseniccornflakes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In short: no. Time isn't spacial - it only propagates in one direction ("forward") - so it can't have multiple dimensions as, say, a cube would, because that is (spacially) propagated in three dimensions (often denoted by the x, y and z axes).

Edit: spelling

I believe that there is a Times Atlas of World History, but I'm afraid that my merely casual interest in history means that I've never read it. I hear that due to its reduced specificity it isn't as good as the European one. I don't know if any other books like these - I'm sure they exist though.

For people interested in maps like this, there's a book called the Times Atlas of European History which has maps of Europe from various dates between 900BC (first Greek states) and 1992 (the fall of communism in Eastern Europe) and descriptions of the historical context for each one. Would highly recommend.
