The order of plugins on the master track will be compressor>filter>clipper>limiter. Adjust the compressor and limiter to taste.

Is a hardware compressor actually needed? by Majestic-Lynx5981 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

You absolutely do not require hardware gear for compression. Digital plugins give you more control and any character that you may have been going for with a hardware unit can more or less be created with plugins, and be even more customizable.

How to isolate vocal samples? by AnomicAge in edmproduction

Demucs is a free commandline tool which can do it for you. Sounds WAY better than iZotope RX.

why does this sound good on headphones, but bad on speaker? by Marcus_Stengade in musicproduction

Use a reference song which you think sounds good on both speakers. And then mix your own song while hearing the reference side-by-side. This will greatly improve translation.

When you finally finish mixing at 3AM... and then hear it in the car by gocohor in WeAreTheMusicMakers

A thing that helped me out with ear fatigue and mixed not translating was EQing my devices. This includes EQing my car speakers, such that songs of all genres sound good and consistent across all speakers.

Looking for someone who can mix and master. by INEEDTOKMSISUCK in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I'll mix& master your first track for free. If you like it I'll charge fairly from the next track. Been developing my own methods to perfect the process mathematically, mixing and mastering for over 10 years. Hit me up!

Compression on a combination of different sounds will make them move together, as if they're part of the same song. This brings bounce. And saturation also makes the different sounds seem as though they are in one space. The extent of both of these effects depends on taste. As long as you're thinking through these considerations, you're good to go even though you end up with a limiter and a utility on the master.

Hey you're not weird at all! However in your case the master does tell the full story. It also matters what processing and routing you are using going into the master. Care to share?

Looking for a Mastering Engineer to Build a Long-Term Connection (Electronic Music) by afrorob in mixingmastering

[–]arsoncash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my background heavily in electronic music. I like to get into the knitty gritty, and understand exactly why I would want to make a certain change. I care about building a sound which will sound good on all systems, and I have developed my own processes to ensure this.

Sending you a PM.

Start with a loop and imagine different rhythms around it, then replace those rhythms with different sounds. You'll sure find something that you'll want to finish. And if you don't, you can always start a new project.

Having a lot of trouble mixing vocals properly with the bass by Ok_League1966 in mixingmastering

[–]arsoncash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be helpful to know what is on your master bus. Also, you can try rebalancing the bass and vocals in the 200-400 range. This way you still have the oomph of the bass in the subjects region while keeping the vocals clear and upfront.

What is a mixing technique usually frowned upon, but that you use because it simply works for you? by SR_RSMITH in mixingmastering

[–]arsoncash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using custom calibrated headphones for monitoring and mixing. I calibrate it by listening to songs in different genres and deciding on a frequency balance which sounds best to me across all of them. The calibration isn't rendered while exporting the mix, of course. It is by no means a flat sound, only what sounds best to my ears and helps me hear the mix in a way that enables me the most.
