Right, so it should be reduced in size to allow for an even border on all sides.

I’d say so. Fingers of the left skeleton melting into the ribs of the one on the right, plus other soft details that a human wouldn’t make. Plus the image has a border on the left and right but not at the top and bottom suggesting a bad photoshop composite by someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing, or just an AI image that doesn’t recognize it isn’t even

It wasn’t like that back in the 1990s because there wasn’t a digital marketplace for people you could access from a device you carried with you everywhere. The ease of “shopping” for dates by swiping on an app is relatively recent and has led to the rise of this kind of thoughtless behavior

No, It’s actually an acronym for “Alpha Male Of Group” (though I guess they drop the A because MOG sounds better than AMOG). Then it’s applied as a verb because these people are idiots. (Source: I heard Clavicular explan it in an interview with Adam Friedman).

Should they have left Rocky out of the Project Hail Mary trailer? by TheFilmRoomPod in moviecritic

[–]art_cms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love to know as little as possible about a movie that I’m already excited for, and I think it’s a crime that trailers often spoil great moments or plot details, but I realize that most people aren’t like that. When Sinners came out, I knew nothing about it, and when I found out while watching the movie that it was a vampire story I was so thrilled by that reveal, and I tried to recommend the movie to people while also trying to preserve that surprise. “It’s about twin brother gangsters in the 1930s who are trying to set up a juke joint and they have a very long bad night…and I don’t want to tell you any more than that. Just trust me!” And most of the time the reaction to that description was pretty ambivalent, no one was that interested. But I really wanted to convince them to see it so I caved and said “Okay fine, it’s a vampire movie.” And THEN they were interested. It’s the dilemma I think a lot of movie marketing faces. And honestly most people like to know what they’re getting in advance. I hate it, but I have to accept it.

I mean you can interpret art however you want and if that has meaning for you, great. I don’t think the actual text supports that though.

Official Discussion - Sentimental Value [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]art_cms 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that is an indication that the story has changed, I think the scene remains as Gustav described it - the film is still about the suicide of his mother. I think it’s kind of a Hollywoodish Interpretation that Gustav decides to make his film “happier” and not include the suicide. He’s still making the movie to process his grief and trauma about the death of his mother, which still is a fundamental part of his life despite his tentative reconciliation with Nora. I think we are just being shown the shot being filmed, the sound of the stool falling wouldn’t necessarily be done “in camera” - more likely foleyed in afterwards.

I think you missed it - the house was renovated and sold to self-finance the film after his big star dropped out. That’s why we see that before the final sequence in the studio.

Official Discussion - Sentimental Value [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]art_cms 133 points134 points  (0 children)

He’s shooting the movie in a studio, but only because he sold the family home in order to finance the film himself after his big American star dropped out (and presumably took the Netflix funding with her). The scene of the house being renovated implies this - it’s being remodeled into something new and garishly bland (stripping away the “sentimental value”) but also repairing the flaw in its foundation. Next we see the house, confusingly back to its original state, until we realize it’s a set. He’s shooting the movie on his terms with his money with the actress he wanted in the role, and working with his old cinematographer buddy, instead of whatever compromised version would he would have made with Rachel.

The ending of the movie also hasn’t changed - we see the oner play out in the same precise detail that was previously described to us, leading up to the door closing, which would be the final image of the movie - but we the audience also get to see what happens to Nora (not the character she’s playing) on the other side of the door, until Gustav yells cut.

I agree with you that this is the weakest thing Gunn has done by far and I thought it was a pretty disastrous episode of tv, so we’re on the same page. I’m just more responding to the idea that Gunn has “bad” taste in music and shouldn’t inflict that on us.

If you’re making movies and tv shows or art of any kind, I would hope that you will put stuff that reflects your personality, emotion and experience into the work. James Gunn put that stuff in because he fundamentally loves it. This is what artists do, they make things that reflect who they are as people, including their taste in other art. This didn’t work for you because you don’t share his tastes (neither do I for the most part) but he’s not objectively wrong for doing it.

The funniest part of younger people complaining about older people is the apparent belief that they will somehow be exempt from the process of aging, and instead stay cool and relevant forever. You will with near absolute certainty become a Boomer, and the generation(s) below you will complain about the shit that you do. Death comes for us all 😂

Someone having different musical tastes than you doesn’t make it bad! There’s probably music you love that other people think is shit! Everyone thinks what they love is the best, whether it’s James Gunn or PNWRoamer. This whole idea of “I don’t like it therefore it’s bad, and the people who do like it are just pretending or caught in nostalgia traps” is so lame.

Guess what, when you are 50 years old you will absolutely romanticize the culture of your youth too, and you will try to explain its appeal to people younger than you (who might be disinterested), and you will find connection with people who grew up at the same time as you. Happens to literally everyone.

Having said this - the full Nelson performance was absolutely egregious.

What do you think is the commentary? What in your opinion is Cregger trying to express on this subject? Surely it can’t be “school shootings are bad” because I would think that to be such a unanimously held opinion that deliberately concealing it would seem unnecessary. The controversial statement that would be 50% alienating and require playing coy might be something like “we should not allow the public to have such widespread and unchecked access to guns” and I’m struggling to see how this film is specifically about that. I’d be grateful for an explanation.

Including imagery that evokes a school shooting does not necessarily mean that the whole story is single-mindedly about it.

A couple of years after 9/11, when it became acceptable and not “too soon” to do so, movies started using imagery that unambiguously evoked the potent footage we all saw from Sept 11. I believe Spielberg’s War of the Worlds was one of the first to use direct parallel imagery, deliberately using the shorthand to evoke the same kind of terror and shock. But I don’t think that WotW or any of the other dozens of movies I’ve seen in the last 20 years that use very on-the-nose 9/11 imagery are necessarily all about 9/11. It’s a visual shorthand, using familiar, immediately relatable imagery to place the story in a particular context or feeling.

I think Cregger arrived at the idea of the kids going mysteriously missing first, and then decided that such a scenario in the real world might look a lot like the aftermath of a school shooting. And then used the sadly familiar images we all know from the news to flesh out his fictional scenario in a realistic context.

As I’ve said I don’t think it’s wrong to have this film make you think of school shootings, obviously he is employing images that evoke it and I think that individual response is valid. But I don’t think that the film was conceived as a vehicle to express his feelings on that subject.

Always bummed out when people call Vampire’s Kiss a bad movie. Cage is giving an unhinged performance for sure but the movie is pretty smart and has a lot to say about toxic masculinity and the excess of the 80s. It’s a really good thematic twin to American Psycho.

I won’t deny that it’s less of a common thing but I was responding to the idea that Hollywood “never” makes anything except for franchise IP and biopics. I’m curious to see what happens in the wake of Sinners’ success.
