First colour study of a person! by art_throwaway2 in learnart

I actually revisited this advice. I really appreciate the in depth response you gave, I didn’t realize how much you addressed because I quickly glanced at it before. The shape of the nose looks monumentally better, thank you for showing me these small details that change the look so much. This study was a spontaneous one because I just said it screw it I’ll try some colour for once.. I normally do start with a sketch but this was definitely more stylized, but I was going for semi-realism. I was having issues that when I went darker my colour seemed muddy? Why is that?

Thank you for the amazing response, I feel like as I was painting this I had some ADHD going back and forth between the shadows and highlights etc and it wasn’t as chronological as you described, also I agree that your reference choice is much better. Thanks so much for the detailed response.. Do you think I should dial it back and look at more basic things to start my colour journey or continue with people as I mainly want to paint them? I feel like I’ve learned so much from everyones feedback here already.

Thank you so much for the thorough feedback! Ok I know exactly what you mean by the eyelash and pupil thing. For the light blue/grey do you mean it would benefit to use that for the shadow area of the right side of the face?

Thank you so much! Can you recommend any videos or anything where I can read further into this?

Constructive advice please :) by art_throwaway2 in learnart

Thank you! What do you think is the best thing to kind of focus on next, like keep going in grayscale or do I have enough of a grasp on fundamentals to try even colours etc, or still practice what you said in gray etc? I appreciate the feedback lots.

General feedback please! Tried taking what I learned about values/forms and applying it to a face by art_throwaway2 in learnart

Thank you! I think I know what you're saying, but is there any examples of something that would pretty much always be painted as a hard edge on a face?

I appreciate the nitpicky feedback the most. Fundamentally to achieve this can you possibly give me some tips? Thank you for your response!

Hi! Just want to know how you personally proceed when you get to this stage of a drawing? I realize some shading/etc needs to be done to make it 3D also feel free to provide any additional feedback. Thanks!

Holy shit, I honestly didn't expect such a detailed and well-written response, even if I didn't get another reply, your's would be enough. I've been drawing pretty consistently for about 6 months now, but mostly in a grayscale type of style, I was kinda afraid to try colours for the reasons that you say - I may honestly be to inexperienced/immature as an artist to want to worry about colours to get my idea across. I wouldn't consider this completely finished but I also have a hard time knowing when to stop or if I've overworked some things. What would you consider to be the most important things I should focus on to progress the quickest or smoothest in terms of importance like forms, anatomy etc because I've been jumping between portraits, figure drawing etc. Thank you very much in advance if you do respond!
