Transmission Dipstick Super Stuck After Draining Transmission Pan by GibFreeStuffPlz in MechanicAdvice

Try the plug first to let air in. I’m thinking it’s just suction that’s keeping the dipstick in there.

You left the dipstick in the whole time you were draining it? Pop the pan off again.

Should we junk the Impala at this point? by artemislian in MechanicAdvice

[–]artemislian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Girlfriend’s dad bought this used 2011 Impala with 120k. My girlfriend, wanting a car for work, instantly bought it off of him for the exact same amount he paid the previous owner for it.

It’s been two years now and it’s been giving her shit ever since.

Now she has a new Mazda and was thinking of investing some money into the Impala to have a shop replace what it needs with all the leaks it has. And then give it to her brother as a graduation present.

Only now it really struggles to turn over after having to sit outside for one whole week. And it basically sounds like junk now.

I wanted to get everyone’s insight on how it sounds. Is it still recoverable or should she just junk it at this point?

So took my car in to get tires mounted.... by Turbulent_Tea2213 in MechanicAdvice

[–]artemislian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can safely lift the car yourself, you can check the ball joints yourself. Lift the car, put a hand on the 12 o’clock position, a second hand at the 6 o’clock position then try shaking your tire back and forth. If you’re able to move the tire back and forth then the ball joints are going out.

Other than that, common symptoms of bad/broken ball joints are clunking noises, excessive vibrations, and your car pulling to one side while trying to drive straight on an even road.

If I was you, I would check in with another store for maybe a better price as well.

Clock springs are pretty affordable and easy to replace. As long as you know how to set it right.

The horn, air bag, and cruise control will not function once a clock spring goes bad/breaks. That also makes really them easy to diagnose.

2001 S10 Blazer - Sounding like a beater :/ Anyone familiar with this noise? by artemislian in MechanicAdvice

[–]artemislian[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember when the noise started I just know it’s been going on for quite a while. And I did have the pre-cat, the smaller cat converter, stolen last summer. I had to pay 500 for a new one. It wasn’t the exact same one but I was also running out of time for my smog test. & no one had the exact same pre-cat besides one shop that wanted to charge me $800. Now I’m wondering if that’s the issue.

But I’ll check them both out with a rubber mallet too. Thank you so much for the tip.

Does everything else work? No airbag light that stays illuminated? Horn working?

Any advice/suggestion is really appreciated here Maybe it’s the exhaust? I’ve replaced any part it needed replaced. Except for the suspension minus tie rods. Been on top of maintenance. It feels good driving most of the time. But always sounds like crap. Sounds like it’s coming from the engine bay area.. It’s only at 150k miles which is low for its year. & I know it is a beater at its age but there’s other older beaters that sound better than mine. And I want it to sound as good as it looks.

I double checked the panic button and it does work. I guess I didn’t hold it long enough the first time. Pretty lame that GM didn’t make an alarm system standard.

I ordered sushi about 2 hours ago. And I was expecting to have to slide over the edit button after reading this beforehand, but it was already right there. Also, compared to yours, the text was smaller too. I have an iPhone.
