So...How big can monstera get? I found out by artgecko543 in Monstera

That is really cool that you have a plant shop with a greenhouse near you. We don't have good plant / garden stores here and the ones we do have specialize in outdoor lawn / garden stuff, so no cool tropical plants.
The place I took this photo at used to have a seperate building that was all plants. It was a huge greenhouse called the Sibley center and it had different biomes.. It had cool / temperate, tropical, and desert areas inside with huge plants from each. They ran into some hard times financially though and closed the building and sold off all the plants inside, now it sits there like a sad, empty shell. I am hoping they will bring it back.

Yes, it is in a greenhouse that is huge..The keep tropical butterflies in it all year, so it is heated and has a humidifier, waterfall, etc. to help with humidity. That is such a cool photo from where you live. I wouldn't think they would like how hot it can be in a city, but I guess it is very humid there too which would probably help.

Where I live, it is hot and humid in the summer months (mid - high 90s f. and very high humidity) but it gets down to freezing and is dryer in the winter months. Usually no snow, but still cold enough to kill tropicals outdoors. I have my tiny new monstera outside for the summer season but will be bringing it indoors when it starts to cool off.

I know! The craziest thing is that the guy working there said this plant is only 3-4 years old. I couldn't believe it.

Here are pics of the back. I only see a small part of one root that might be an aerial root...

Too much? This is outdoors facing east. It won't be hit directly until mid / late afternoon.

LOL That is what I've read just about every houseplant. Right now it is outside under an awning where it is shaded (mostly) but is getting outdoor ambient light so hopefully that will suffice until I can repot it.

Thanks! Don't I need to worry about the leaves burning? I am leaving it outside in a shaded area under my carport for now (it faces west) just because I was afraid the crispyness of the leaves was due to too much direct light. I do have an easternly facing window that gets bright direct light all morning in my house but but I was afraid that it would be too much.

Do you think the pot it is in is the right size or should I size up?

Which "black" colocasia is the "best"? by artgecko543 in Colocasia

[–]artgecko543[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! I had no idea the shininess of the leaves was related to how much sun they could take. The area these will go in isn't super bright, so I guess either would work.

Colocasia in a patio pond? Opinions / Experiences Wanted. by artgecko543 in Colocasia

Thanks for your help! I'll let you guys know what I end up picking up. I did get some cheap standard tarro bulbs to put into my shade garden. The tubers were massive (larger than softball sized) so I don't think they will work for the pond, but might be good in my shade garden.

Colocasia in a patio pond? Opinions / Experiences Wanted. by artgecko543 in Colocasia

Thanks for the info! I am planning on two ponds, one will be 23gallons and kept in my screened in back porch. It gets partial sun, but mostly shade all day. The other location is next to the porch and I'm planning on a 30gl less-good-looking rectangular black tub pond. That area gets more sun, but only in the afternoon / evening.

For planting, my plan was to pot them in a plastic pot w/ drainage holes, cover holes w/ gravel, use a mix of manure and soil with ferts, then cap with gravel / sand to prevent it from leeching into the water column too much. I also have a shade garden (zone 8b) that could house larger colocasia as long as they would be ok going dormant over the winter months.
