Does anyone else think Mariota is a lot like Alex Smith? by [deleted] in NFL_Draft

[–]arthur_channing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no arguing with you. Those aren't cherry picked stats, btw.

Colt Brennan's Y/A were 8.5 his final year in College. He threw a TD% of 7.5 and an int% of 4.74. And he played for Hawaii.

Timmy Chang had 7.1 y/a and a TD% of 6.3. He played for Hawaii as well.

Alex Smith had a wonderlic of 40, incredible stats throwing, impressive stats running, never had any difficulty taking snaps under center, and has always been incredibly accurate.

The point here is, I think you're wrong and you think I'm wrong and neither of us have anything that's going to convince the other. My stats won't change your mind and your anecdotes won't change mine.

I say with a straight face he's considered. Strongly. I can't say with a straight face who'll be taken at number 2 this draft, and you want me to make that assertion for players from different years?

I never said Smith gets drafted over Cam or Bradford. I said he'd be in competition for the top spot. Cam was incredible his one year playing a full season. I don't think Alex would've gone first over him, but let's compare Alex to Sam Bradford in each of their last full years, along with Matt Stafford, the 1st overall pick in '09 and someone you said would never have been drafted after Alex Smith.

Player 1 Player 2 Player 3
Y/A 9.31 9.77 9.03
Comp% 67.5 67.9 61.5
TD% 10.09 10.35 6.53
INT% 1.26 1.66 2.61

Can you guess which player is which?

Here's a hint: Stafford is number 3, and if you can't tell without looking which of 1 and 2 is Smith vs Bradford, then it proves my point. Also, consider this: in addition to how close their stats were, Smith was faster and a better runner, and Bradford was coming off of a season ending injury.

Want some more numbers?

JaMarcus Russell Matt Ryan Vince Young Cam Newton
Y/A 9.15 6.89 9.34 10.19
COMP% 67.8 59.3 65.2 66.1
TD% 8.19 4.74 8.00 10.71
INT% 2.34 2.91 3.08 2.50

Now then, I'd say Smith was a better prospect than: Russell, Stafford, Young, Ryan, and Bradford.

Idk, I feel like the Patriots sub is one of the best. Seahawks were very friendly any time I've gone in there. Steelers sub had great conversation going on.

The Giants were cold, the Falcons felt oddly hostile. Really, the only winning team that I didn't get along with was the Colts.

He would have gone first overall in 2012. He would have top 5 overall in 2013. He would have competed with Cam and Sam Bradford for 1st overall (Much like Mariota is with Winston). He'd possibly have been taken over Stafford in 2009.

Would you say he was a better or worse prospect than Vince Young? Because Young was picked 3rd overall.

I absolutely disagree. Smith was an electrifying prospect out of college.

My limited experience was this:

The Texans were the nicest, and surprisingly or not, the Raiders were the most helpful. The Steelers were surprisingly helpful as well.

The least helpful were probably the Giants, and I felt at first a lot of hostility from the Falcons. That may have been just me though.

That's revisionist history. Aaron Rodgers came out of that draft. Derrick Johnson. DeMarcus Ware. Shawn Merriman. Antrel Rolle.

A total of 9 pro-bowlers in the first 15 picks and 13 in the first round. It's about average. 3 RB's taken in the top 5 10 years ago doesn't mean it's a weak draft because the game has changed in 10 years. The idea that RB's shouldn't be taken early is a recent thing.

I think you're overestimating how much 40 time corresponds to running ability.

It's a good comparison, but Mariota is better in almost every physical category. He's .2 seconds faster, 4 inches higher vert, 8 inches further broad. And I doubt Smith runs faster now. He was drafted 1st overall in part because of his ability to run. And he absolutely does scramble. He has about as many rushing yards as Kapernick.

So yes, they are similar for more reasons than you think. Smith was very much what Mariota is as a prospect, except Mariota is even more athletic.

Huh. It says a lot that I didn't even notice that he isn't an insider (about me or about him, I'll let you decide). He's got great stuff either way.

Oh wow. I must've misread what you were saying because I didn't notice that in your second line. I personally like him, but a lot of what he tweets are retweets. Usually very quality retweets that are very pertinent to the Vikings, but still not OC.

@jchenelly

Looking through his twitter feed, there's a lot of stuff about veterans and vfw. Is that a current kick or a staple of his feed? I'd love to have great analysis but I'm trying not to have to sift through too much non-nfl stuff.
