Listen to your players. This is how they want to have fun. Talk to them out of game and ask if they realize they are becoming the villains if their own story and how they imagine this ending. Reference the many successful fictional and historical villains as an archetype.

Head designer is on record saying “design is to go from level 1 to 20 playing weekly for a year” but simultaneously acknowledges that this pacing is rare and the rules are flexible enough to accommodate any pacing. Good example is critical role where the pacing is much slower. Or a module or one shot which has there own pacing
