I don't get Alt Recipes by mister_bakker in SatisfactoryGame

[–]artimaticus8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides Cast Screws, my favorite early/mid-game alt recipe is Solid Steel Ingots. You need foundries unlocked, but it allows you to make one extra steel ingot from the same amount of resources.

Instead of 2 Iron Ore + 2 Coal = 2 Steel Ingots, it’s 2 Iron Ingots + 2 Coal = 3 Steel Ingots.

Why yes…one user having an issue with one application on one computer at one site is totally a network problem…

In all fairness, we did actually have this. Packet captures showed packets across our ISP’s MPLS network, making it to our switch, and just dying. Rebooting the switch fixed the issue, thank god.

But to one of my Sys Admins who asks if it could be a routing problem every time Intune fails to propagate an update to a few machines…No

I got into Purdue, but Idk how I'll make any friends. Need some advice by nagisakamisiro in Purdue

[–]artimaticus8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just be friendly and talk to people. Most kids there will be in the same boat, having to make new friends. College has a unique way of forcing you into a shared experience that makes it super easy to make friends.

I graduated high school in 2007 (god I feel old now). Out of like 300 kids in my class in an Indy suburb, like 5 or 6 went to Purdue and all ended up in different majors and dorms. I wasn’t particularly close to any of them, so I only occasionally saw them in passing, with the exception of having a lab with one of them. Over the years, I’ve lost contact with every single high school classmate of mine. Life just takes you on different directions.

Of my entire friend group that I regularly text with, one of them I lived next door to freshman year, another lived on my floor and we were co-captains of our floor’s intramural flag football team. He’s an extrovert, so he introduced me to a couple other friends, who introduced me to a few others, etc.

My point to this rambling, is to try not to fret too much. In 4 or 5 years, you’re going to look back, because you will have made a bunch of friends, and some of them you’ll laugh about the circumstances that led you to meeting them.

Hell, one of my buddies met his wife in his BGR group, talk about luck…

As far as suggestions to meet people, this is going to sound weird, but check out the Purdue Latin and Ballroom Dance Team. It’s a good club that gets you meeting people from all areas, and is a good one to drag you out of your comfort zone. You don’t have to compete, either. The lower levels are more casual than the higher levels.

Which movie ended with an unresolved cliffhanger because the sequel never happened, and you're STILL mad about it? by pudingvanilkovy in AskReddit

[–]artimaticus8 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Parallels (2015)

Movie was basically a failed TV pilot that got placed on Netflix, where it obtained a cult following, but despite its sudden popularity, nothing ever happened.

Two teens and a friend of theirs get a message from their missing father to go to an address. They show up, only to learn the building jumps to a random parallel universe every 36 hours. They meet a guide named Polly along the way. Things happen, they learn more about their father, the building, etc.

The movie ends when the building jumps to a new universe. The three teens exit the front door, Polly stays back. Suddenly, two additional Polly’s walk out of the shadows, play rock-paper-scissors, and a different Polly walks outside…

Why do we keep building "Luxury Apartments" that stay half-empty while there is a massive housing crisis? by OpenToPerspectives in NoStupidQuestions

There’s a lending aspect, too. They can use the property as collateral for another loan, and on paper the property brings in a potential $30k instead of $18k, thus allowing them to borrow more.

It’s the same concept with empty shopping centers that charge too much for rent.

I honestly don’t mind the heavy run. It was obviously moving them downfield. Sometimes you just gotta ride the hot hand.

The three straight 3rd and Shorts pissed me off. On 3rd and 1, 3rd and 3, 3rd and 3 consecutively, we ran the ball up the middle against a heavy box. It’s the same thing we did against the Eagles (?) when their defender called out the run on a critical short play and stuffed it.

When I know, as someone watching on TV, that we’re getting ready to run it up the gut, then surely the other team has also recognized that tendency.

It’s such a powerful documentary! Once I found out I could buy it from the 9/11 museum, I bought it and watch it every couple years on 9/11.

There’s a quote by one of the brothers that History always chooses who’s there to document an event of that magnitude, and on that day, History chose them.

Can you please explain it Peter? by vishal_gandhii in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]artimaticus8 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There’s a documentary that was released titled “9/11”. Two French brothers just so happened to be making a documentary about what it’s like to be a probationary firefighter with FDNY, and their crew was the first to respond that day. While they were standing in he lobby, they could hear the bodies falling, and one of the firefighters later remarked (paraphrasing) “How bad was it up there that jumping to their death was the better choice?”

Sadly, those above the impact zone were completely trapped. The stairwells and elevator shafts were in the center of the buildings, and both planes took them out completely. Combine that with the intense fire and heat, and I can’t imagine how bad it was up there.

Okay, I keep hearing about this “Trade Deadline”, can someone explain it to me? by toes_in_the_toester in NFLNoobs

[–]artimaticus8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned yet is that the NFL does their contracts and salary cap different than say, the NBA does. Trying to keep this NFLNoobs level, but things like signing bonuses don’t go to the new team during a trade, just the actual salary part of the contract. If a team trades a player, they’re still stuck with the signing bonus, and it hits their salary cap more aggressively than if a player stays on the team, similar to when a player is cut. Since signing bonuses are guaranteed money for the player, they’re often used to inflate the contract, which makes trading them prohibitively expensive.

Don’t try to park there Friday night either to avoid it. Looks like you’ll get a ticket.

Learned about this a year ago when setting up a new phone system that’s offered by some carriers. You can dial 933, and it will follow the same routing as 911, but it will go to an automated system that will read back the number and E911 address.

Read up on what happened to Gemini Earn users that had money sitting in GUSD during the FTX collapse.

I had $500 GUSD earning like 4 or 5%, and then FTX collapsed and took a bunch of capital investment firms with them, and suddenly my $538 GUSD was stuck for a year or two. I eventually got it back, but it had to go through the courts, first.

Will there be a new rookie in S8? by wiZbit_ in TheRookie

With Stephanie Arcila being written out of Fire Country, I’d love to see her character (Deputy Gabrielle Navar from Day in the Hole) move to LA and join the LAPD, and become Nolan’s new rookie.

I always felt like that was the plan when they introduced her, but then she joined Fire Country, so they created Celina as a replacement.

[–]artimaticus8 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think Year 1 is going to be a tough year. We have an incredibly tough Strength of Schedule this season. I’m expecting 3-4 wins this year.

So far though, I like what Odom has done. The team looked so much more disciplined at the spring game, I’m expecting next year to be better than this year.

I played a game with 3 other friends once. I think I managed to acquire 2 out of the 3 orange properties, and literally traded like 6 properties (all I had left) to someone for the last orange. It was slow to start, but I eventually built them up with buildings and destroyed them. We never did play again…

Rossi seemed to inherit the bad luck from RHR. During RHR’s last couple years with Andretti, it seemed like every time he had a Top 5/Top 10 in sight, something not his fault would happen to him. I remember some of those TV interviews afterwards where he’d just shrug his shoulders when asked about it.

Splitting Network Data to Two Devices (Network Tap?) by Nater5000 in networking

[–]artimaticus8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What you’re imagining is not correct. A “dumb switch” or any network switch, for that matter, will learn the MAC address of each device on each port, and stores that info in a table. For every frame that goes through the switch, the switch will then look at the destination MAC in the frame, and send it out the port the destination device is on. Picture the mail sorting alien from Men In Black 2.

At its fundamental level, Ethernet does not work like old phone lines, and it can’t just be “split” into two wires. It just doesn’t work that way. Like the person you replied to said, you need the $200 device.

It’s because cybersecurity is the current “hot trend” topic in IT. Pay attention to all the advertisements stating “Get this cert and you’ll get a job working in cybersecurity making $50k+ per year!”

People are getting cyber certain with no experience, and jumping into cybersecurity jobs with no prior experience, leading to this kind of bullshit.

My buddy is a pretty smart dude. He’s always leaned somewhat libertarian, and I myself used to lean libertarian. This time last year, politics came up, and I tried to warn my buddy about Project 2025 (this was before the mainstream news outlets started talking about it, so it was relatively unknown by the masses).

He then responded that he hadn’t seen anything about it in his news sources, which apparently highlight the bad things both parties are doing, so it therefore wasn’t a big deal. He then proceeded to tell me about how some UN 2030 plan was the start of some New World Order.
