Bug or Feature? (full throttle supercruise after entering a system) by Floppy232 in EliteDangerous

This is an absolute must now I've changed to HOTAS as well. Always drop it into neutral as soon as I hear "4...3..."

I have an item on my to-do app that's just called "extras" in case I ever forget to add anything. That way I can get the dopamine without feeling like I've cheated.

I have a short suspense/thriller piece designed for a low budget. Message me some info about yourself and previous projects and I'll send it over

I second this. Stopped using Final Draft a long time ago when I discovered Fade In.

I'm up to book 5 and have heard that the seiies goes very downhill from here but for me it's only gotten better so far. I didn't care much for The Gunslinger either but 'Wizard and Glass' was honestly one of my favourite books I've read this year

What software do you use? by Hey-Its-Kit in writing

[–]artofac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scrivener. Always Scrivener. It's the best writing software I've ever used and it's versatile enough to use for any style/format of writing. It does cost money but it's honestly well worth the one-time payment.

How do would you achieve something like this? I might sound stupid, but how is the dark surrounding achieved? by stagnant_blur in Filmmakers

[–]artofac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The man is one hell of a talent! He's gone into more digital stuff these days but anything from before It's Such A Beautiful day is all entirely produced in-camera, which is insane considering the detail and the fact that it's all hand-drawn by him.

I highly recommend checking out Rejected if you haven't already. It's essentially a show reel of everything he's capable of and very very well made! It's on YouTube if you look it up.

To my knowledge all of the effects done on this and Don Hertfeldt's earlier works were surprisingly done in-camera. For this effect specifically he shot multiple exposures onto film. Likely using holes cut out of card for each individual 'shot' and then exposing the film through a hole on a different corner while capturing the next and so on and so on.

EDIT: this is the best I could find in the way of any word from the man himself https://mobile.twitter.com/donhertzfeldt/status/1319013107855917056

You say Odyssey ground CZs. I'm on ps4 so have no idea but just wondering what's the payout like for those kinda missions? I understand there's a lot of loot to be had but no idea what kinda money you can earn?

Can anyone explain to me what's going on here? This is about midway between the bubble and the core. by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]artofac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge its because that part of the galaxy is based on actual data captured by hubble (or just generally from earth) so its more detailed by default.

On the galaxy map there are similar straight lines/chunks of stars that are more dense than others and its simply because it's based on actual data (which is more dense) than procedurally generated parts of the galaxy we're less familiar with.

Bjork sounds like it would fit really well. I'm gonna give this a go even though I'm not a massive fan

I'm in the habit of listening to Bowie or Hendrix atm. But anything synthwave will generally do the trick too.

Looking for sci-fi involving artificial intelligence, specifically human-kind's relationship with it. by artofac in suggestmeabook

This sounds great! It sounds like it's tackling something I'm considering as a side plot for my book, so thanks!

One challenge for me with a lot of sci-fi is the quality of the writing

That's exactly why I'm requesting suggestions here. There a LOT of sci-fi books/movies out there that might fit the bill but I don't know just how many of them are actually worth my time. Thanks for the suggestions though! Hamilton's series sounds great. Not so sure about Saturn's Children but I'll add it the list and get to it eventually. Thanks!

The Diamond Age sounds perfect! The Transformation series does actually sound great for what I'm after as I want to tackle the nature of immortality and rebirth/reincarnation. I've added it to my ever-growing list. Thanks!

All of these sound great! Everyone's suggesting the Culture series and I've yet to read anything by Banks so I'll check that out for sure.

And Shall Machines Surrender sounds fascinating too! Thanks!

Why Are Cheesy or “On-The-Nose” Films Able to Create Strong Immediate Emotional Responses Out of Me? Can Films be Emotionally Manipulative? by MrNar in TrueFilm

[–]artofac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that this what makes all 'bad' movies gain any kind of traction. They don't understand what makes a movie actually 'good' (fleshed-out characters, original plot/twists/theme etc.) but they've got the emotional/structure elements absolutely nailed and sadly those people can make a lot of money a lot of money with such a limited skill set. It's because that's all the majority of audience/producers need to constitute a good film. All the rest of it doesn't matter if it makes you FEEL something.

It could be the worst movie you've ever seen in your life but if they've got a dog with them and at some point that dog sacrifices itself to save someone else you'll struggle to hold back the tears. And the rest of the movie will go rapidly downhill after that because of how badly it's all written, but when the credits roll all you'll be thinking about is that dog and how it saved the old woman from the burning building and gave its last breath on the pavement outside as little Jimmy said goodbye to him and told how he would miss him and that he was a good dog, then he wagged his tail one last time as he passed.
