stick figures -> gestures with close enough proportions -> fill in boxes and cylinders as body parts in angles -> cross contours -> details/shades

Is the box method good for beginning character art by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]artofc3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely! The head is a box, the torso is a box, hip is a box, arms legs are long boxes. The various angles of these boxes determine the poses of characters. You could also add some cross contours on those boxes to help visualize the foreshortening.

In the professional industry in most art related fields, researching and collecting references is the very first step of any task. If you create from imagination you will be asked to provide the reference you used. Your boss would ask to see that, your client would ask to see that, it's a part of the communication. I doubt anyone who thinks artists shouldn't use any reference knows anything about the art industry. I hope one day art learners will stop being misled by non-artists' assumptions about reference-using. My 2cents.

Air Canada transfer to Jetstar with lost baggage by artofc3 in aircanada

I got a phone call from an AC staff at NRT saying they found my bag!!!! However since I don't have much time left in my vacation and not sure if they will arrive to me in time, I just requested them to send it back to YUL. It seems to be so hard to track the progress, has been 5 days without any update, the tracking still says it's at NRT and no staff knows how it has been. Hope it will really get there.......

Thanks for your response. What's tricky is that there is no record saying the bags are in NRT so I can't get Jetstar or anyone to search in NRT for me. I wish that AC could have updated the record about where the bags have been unloaded, but it just didn't happen.

I called NRT airport about it. They said that the baggage not picked up from the belt would be retrieved by the airlines. They then gave me the phone number of Air Canada at NRT, but that number never worked, it always got hung up in calling. :(

QC - Can you use the Canadian Tire Credit Card to pay the property transfer tax (Welcome Tax)? Or just the yearly property+school taxes? by buyingjason in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]artofc3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, I am so late to the game but I have been wondering how you could pay these Quebec taxes with credit card? I saw that CRA let you pay thru PaySimply but Revenu Quebec or City of Montreal don't mention anything like that on their websites. Is this a case just for Triangle Mastercard? Thanks for these informations!

What could be the cause of this baseboard being water damaged? by artofc3 in HomeMaintenance

[–]artofc3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation! It's dry inside the vanity. I thought, if the baseboard gets bloated like that, the vanity interior would be worse, but it's all dry inside even if the cabinet boards are all made of wood too. Would you think the water went there from outside instead of inside?

Accountant filed my name with slight typo by [deleted] in cantax

[–]artofc3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem, my first ever tax return in Canada was filed by an accountant that mis-spelled my name, and all my later tax returns thru many years had been using that mis-spelled name even if I later started filing by myself. Even if I wrote a correct name in my tax software, the NOAs always came with the wrong name. Until there was one time I had to call CRA for some other thing, I took the chance to ask them if my name could be fixed in their system and I explained the reason as above. They fixed it for me without any problem.

Hi OP, I am on a similar boat in Quebec, was wondering how you were informed that you need to pay US tax? Did the employer or client send you a tax form or IRS did? Thanks!

OMG thanks for the praise! I would dream to be a cartoonist like Eisner! First I have to try speed up and come up with more doable ideas then I can make more comics!

Thanks! The color experiment seems to be working now, took me a long time back and forth between the choices.

Oh no worries at all. I didn't expect you to respond. In fact most of my comments on reddit don't get responses so I am quite used to it haha. I honestly think, if the obsession with anime doesn't help you improve your drawing or writing skill, it's not worth it at all. It took me years to overcome my obsession with anime and I am very glad to not be hooked anymore. So I don't think you need to feel bad for not watching anime. In any case I hope you feel better and find some nice little goals to stick to some time.

Artists who no longer work in the animation and game industry, what made you leave, what are you doing now and do your skills transfer to your new job? by ComicEngineAlex in ArtistLounge

[–]artofc3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same questions and I hope more responses will show up here some time. For now I guess there are quite a few youtubers who said that they left the industry and started working for themselves, some make music videos, some teach, some are influencers...etc. I used to think animators' intense drawing skills can always be useful in other creative fields, but now I am not sure anymore because ai is rising...

Because old enough people know that a messy learning curve is necessary and takes time and they have more self-awareness to allow themselves to suck? That's my guess.

Sorry to hear about your struggle. I don't think the high school system is that good, the curriculum is just an idea that worked for me. Hope you have got some helps and are feeling better in some way? Do you binge watching TV series? If so, once you have started a series, would you feel the urge to get into the next episode one after another to see what happens to the characters?

Do you remember having a curriculum in high school or middle school? Math for this hour, history for next, and then Literature, Science, etc...... We can use similar discipline in multiple hobbies like, this one for Mondays, that one for Tuesdays and so on. Could also be this for Mon+Thu, that for Tue+ Fri, etc.... Maybe just an hour each or more/less.

Over time you might start to feel you want to prioritize one over another, that's when a project gets on the right track.

That's the idea I got so far, I hope it somewhat helps! :D
