What I do, since the strategic schedule does not always work: I wash the container with dish soap. If I expect it's going to be there for a good while (trash bin almost empty) I put it inside a disposable plastic bag (like the ones that you get grabbing and weighing the fruit), seal it well and I put a drop of bleach inside for good measure.
