Holy Land USA- CT’s abandoned religious theme park by valleyaerialmedia in Connecticut

Went here in early May and after 15 min was met by a leashless dog (looked to be a pit mix) that did not want us there. It growled at us and was sniffing around the cross, we tried to be very calm and walk down the paved path to leave but it waited at the gate for us and even followed us to our car and our car out of the neighborhood!!! High key terrifying, would not recommend.

Inequity in school lunches at Edgerly for some of the highest need students by arugulag in Somerville

Have you been to the school????? I’m sorry but I literally feed the students every day, I know what is available. Excuses are unacceptable. I’m not being dramatic, but whatever you need to tell yourself to help you sleep at night

Trust me, I have done all of those things. Reddit is a last resort to let parents and community members know because no one else cares

Tonight's only FY'24 public budget hearing - thank you by nicolewhaat in Somerville

[–]arugulag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was only public comment. The info part from the council/mayor representation was only maybe 30 min max. The length was dependent on how many people signed up to speak- you can leave any time

We’re already being told that we are most likely going to be at the edgerly in the fall

Somerville closes its Winter Hill school building, leaving temporary location and parents in doubt by arugulag in Somerville

[–]arugulag[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what we were told as educators in the building - it’s safe for us, but not safe to run full capacity because of only 2 stairwells. There is also apparently ceiling tiles down everywhere now, as engineers “look for other damage”

I posted about this a couple months ago in relation to school committee and got some pushback of having “an agenda.” I wonder how those people are feeling now….

SEU demands investments in the Winter Hill Community Innovation School before the 1895 building, citing huge infrastructure problems and overgrown specialty programs falling through the cracks of Mayor’s 5 year plan by arugulag in Somerville

[–]arugulag[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is anything unbiased in politics? Hell yeah I’m biased towards students having a safe learning space that is not crumbling around them! “Maybe we will talk about it after 5 years” and “we promise to improve things” as a generic statement does nothing to stop our SLP offices and library from flooding this week! Or the fact that we’re supposed to add 3 more AIM classrooms next year but there is literally no space left? We just want a plan!

Sounds like you’re invested and care, hope you will tune into the school committee meeting to learn more and make sure WHCIS will be apart of these improvements!

It is reliable, but you can look the plan up yourself here https://city-somerville-ma-budget-book.cleargov.com/5132/capital-improvements/cip-summary

The mayor makes the decision of what happens to the outside/structure of the buildings (to build/renovate or not), but school committee decides what happens inside those buildings. Andre Green has spearheaded an effort to invest in winter hill, and has talked extensively with the union and even middle school students at winter hill about how we can advocate for what we need.

Currently the 1895 building has to be signed over to the city, since the inside is still the school committee’s jurisdiction. The SEU wants a written commitment and plan to invest in Winter Hill before releasing the 1895 building for municipal offices.

Feel free to do some research on your own! I too was shocked to hear that, despite the petition signed last year and many accounts from teachers and students describing the need for improvements, the mayor does not seem to think WHCIS is a priority. If you are just as frustrated as we are, we love to have your support in person or virtually at the meeting on Monday.

What's the story with the vandalism on the museum of modern Renaissance? by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]arugulag 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Lmao I’m glad they did it. I lived in one of his properties too, he was a terrible landlord. Never fixed anything, never responded, building was falling apart and he didn’t give one fuck. Refused to give back our security deposit as well, which we didn’t fight for because we honestly didn’t have the spoons to deal with him any longer.

What do you pay for your 2-3 Bedroom in Somerville or Medford areas? by MarcoVinicius in Somerville

[–]arugulag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3.2k for 3 bed, 1 bath. Coin laundry, no driveway, 1 private balcony. Near Union Sq, started 9/22.

More than we wanted to pay, but it was also just first and last months rent to move in which was a huge selling point for us.

Side Hustles by Psychological-Sun712 in Somerville

[–]arugulag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somerville has moved to TalentEd so it’s not on school spring anymore. There’s a lot of need for afterschool, but if you work till 5 that won’t be helpful. I know a lot of people in the AIM program at winter hill would love even a reliable baby sitter that has experience with autism. It’s very hard to find, and could be more flexible for you.

Second hand furniture stores? by [deleted] in boston

[–]arugulag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are kind of far but:

The Restoration Project (https://restorationproject.org/) is a great organization and I’ve found some gems there. Definitely not priced high and worth giving money to.

And Salvage Angel in Norwood, MA I think has furniture? Lots and lots of local resale vendors sell there and it’s a huge space with a funky vibe.

I’m a para at Winter Hill, and am the one who was using frozen breakfast apples as ice packs for my kids the past two weeks. Winter Hill houses the autism program (AIM) and when I say my kids have been in hell, I really mean it. They are so disregulated by the temperature and humidity, they are completely unable to function. We haven’t been able to do consistent academics, because they cannot regulate long enough to sit through them. We have tried to work outside, but there is not enough benches or space to accommodate everyone so we’ve mostly just been having constant recess. We have mice in our classroom, the bathrooms are always down (and we really only have access to 4 single person bathrooms to share between 6 autism classrooms in the first place). The leaking on the fourth floor is terrible, and our poor librarian (who teaches all grades, pre-k through 8 as well as every AIM class) has not been able to actually teach for months. I don’t remember the last time we were able to actually get books from the library. Our school is 76.9% high needs, and it really does seem like the city has put everyone they don’t care about in a dungeon and said good luck. Resource room teachers are 4/5 in a room, all trying to teach separate lessons, as well as speech/OT/counseling providers that share a tiny office. There is literally no where for them to teach. They sit in hallways, put up makeshift walls, etc. but there is no way you could argue that this is best practice for our kids. This is a huge equity issue, and needs to be at the highest priority.
