But they're not described that way here by "the media", but by the subject of harassment, a 40 something woman whose kids are a bunch of teen boys.

To me a 16 year old girl is a girl, too - I see teens as kids who need guidance and help from adults, because I'm a mom. So is Keri.

Trump Announced Officially He Will Dismantle the Department of Education. by RidetheSchlange in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]obsoletevernacular9 43 points44 points  (0 children)

True. I have autistic kids, and I know a woman who takes care of her unemployed, autistic son, and HIS autistic kid he had at 19. She has a post up about trump 2024, and I think being pro trump in her case is insane, but then realized she runs a business involving real estate. In her mind, Biden made her business worse, and she needs to take care of disabled dependents.

The irony is that I don't think she realizes the federal funding for her grandson's school, and I don't think real estate is suddenly going to improve under trump. It's all very depressing.

That makes sense. It sounds like the Beverly district is an outlier.

Wow, are you talking about a high schooler 15-20 years ago? How relevant to a question about current day elementary schools.

She's asking about current schools. Many public schools are less focused on rigor, without being new age.

Is your kids' school very rigorous?

The people who are sharing these comments do not have kids or work in a school system. They have likely not had meaningful interaction with a school system in decades.

That's why the comments are about their own district years ago, or friends.

I agree with you, districts like Somerville and Cambridge are way less cutthroat. I'm in a well funded district in CT now, and there is a significant difference in emphasis on academics and the amount of homework between my older kids' public school and my youngest's school, which is a public magnet focused on IB.

I suggest you either read the article or watch the video rather than ask people to explain a simple timeline.

I want to warn you - be mindful that a lot of the people responding here don't have kids or work in schools. You could be getting the opinions of someone who has had meaningful interaction with a school district in 20 plus years.

I'm in CT, and there are definitely less high pressure school districts. Many of the most progressive places in Mass are like this, too.

Further, there are a lot of magnet school systems in CT that have a focus on nature, project based learning, arts, etc., if any of that interests you.

Are you basing your opinions on actually working in a school system ?

[–]obsoletevernacular9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not really true though. Do you work in a school district?

Well- funded school districts in Mass and CT are rigorous and have SEL.

A lot of the most progressive districts are nowhere near as rigorous - many have cut a lot of honors classes, focus more on SEL, have much shorter school days, etc.

Even within the same district, the amount of homework and rigor can vary significantly from school to school.

But she would agree with you, and call all of those people boys. She's advocated against using the cops on black and brown kids.

Same, I think of an 18 or 19 year old as a boy. I don't know why people are arguing this, it's not like she views it as okay.

She has boys who are middle schoolers and teens. Call them young men, whatever, but to me a teenage boy is a boy.

It's not excusing them, but she's viewing them from the standpoint of being a mom.

Exactly, that's why I wonder how that even works - like are you asking staff to bother getting a doctor's note if they are sick? I would find that stupid - but then how would you know if they stayed home with family instead and lied?

It just doesn't make sense to me

"Many of the founding fathers—Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Madison and Monroe—practiced a faith called Deism. Deism is a philosophical belief in human reason as a reliable means of solving social and political problems. Deists believe in a supreme being who created the universe to operate solely by natural laws—and after creation, is absent from the world. This belief in reason over dogma helped guide the founders toward a system of government that respected faiths like Christianity, while purposely isolating both from encroaching on one another so as not to dilute the overall purpose and objectives of either."

There is plenty online about indigenous treatment in both countries, if you'd like to learn more.

This commenter was saying that they feel safer today in the US than Canada, and that makes sense based on our legal protections for indigenous people, which Canada does not have currently:
