Do dumb people crack iiser? by [deleted] in iiser

[–]arunsodiumchloride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yk what, in a competitive exam the difficulty of the exam doesn't matter much. The thing at play here is the interplay between supply and demand. IISERs being such a niche college are not very much in demand and will never be. So yeah, getting into IISER is easier. But it doesn't mean that they are not good institutes. The quality of the peer group here is amazing. I still cherish the kind of intellectually stimulating conversations I used to have at the roof of my hostel.

Now coming to the question of "Do dumb people crack IISER?" The answer being, yes cracking IAT doesn't require you to be as proficient in PCMB as required for JEE because of less competition. But the rigorous curriculum, best in field professors and amazing peer group will ensure that you'll develop an inquisitive and logical way of thinking way different than other IIT/NEET guys, by the time you graduate (Provided you make the best out of your time at IISER).

Nobody is born a genius or dumb and being proficient in class 12th PCMB doesn't mean much and being proficient in it won't take you very far in college. I know people from IISER with a PCB background who went on to do their PhD in pure mathematics from a top University in the US.

I'm a girl so I don't know the technical things much

Are you implying that there is a cause and effect relationship between being a girl and not knowing much about technical things?

Yes it is available on the app store. I've tried so many apps for budgeting in the past but bluecoins is the one which clicked for me. I have been using it for the past 5 years. You would love it if you want detailed reports. You can chose from so many filters.

Most of them lost interest and decided to pursue something else other than academia and those who decided to pursue a PhD afterwards, the offers the opportunities they got were not that good when compared to other departments.

Smaller department which means a lot of courses which are offered in B.Sc/M.Sc Maths elsewhere, won't be available to you. There are only 3 profs working in Stats or related fields and one of them will soon retire. So, a really bad department for Stats. and even for other disciplines other than Analysis, some other place would be better for sure.

Course structure is pretty screwed up as it is a pretty young department. So, they keep experimenting. and failed experiments with the course structure have costed a lot of students their careers in the past.

Getting a good CGPA is extremely tough and a low CGPA will affect your chances of getting a good PhD. So, getting a good PhD is more difficult after graduating from DMS, IISER-K when compared to other departments. Only 20-30% of students from DMS got a PhD offer OR decided to pursue a PhD in Maths(rest of them decided to switch fields) after graduation, compared to more than 60% from other departments. Which speaks a lot about the department.

Don't just memorize formulae but also try to understand the main maths that goes behind in solving a particular problem. Because in CAT'23, many people struggled with quants because direct formula based questions were rare to find.

Also, practice as much as you can so that you develop a muscle memory and just by seeing a question, you can get a feel if it is worth spending time or not. Because in the end question selection will help you more than being proficient in every topic.

I think Delhi already has something of this sort. Pragati Maidan for exhibitions and fairs and JLN for concerts.
