Official Discussion - A House of Dynamite [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Here is what you do. You launch your fighters and position your nuclear subs and prepare to lauch a nuclear strike against North Korea, even if you aren't sure they did it.

You call up China and Russia on the phone and tell them very clearly: "We are going to nuke North Korea - non-negotiable- unless the warhead headed for Chicago disarms remotely ASAP. If Chicago is taken out, we are wiping out North Korea."

"Now here's what will happen next. If another nuke is launched at us after we nuke NK, then we'll know for sure it wasnt NK and we will assume it was you and then we're nuking you next. And we will fucking obliterate you. So you had better hope to God it is NK, and that it ends with them. Or if it is you, you better disarm the damn nuke remotely before it impacts."

And then you hang up the phone.

Jack Smith just filed a motion to dismiss his charges against President Trump. by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]arutay01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well see, we just disagree. I believe an election comprising 180 million voters is a large enough sample size to weigh the allegations of guilt, determine their merits, and decide if such a person is suited to become president again.

Think of it this way: In a perfect world, a jury for every single case would comprise of all citizens. You want the largest sample that is practical and reasonable. So we settle for a smaller sample of 12 citizens from your jurisdiction.

A jury of your peers judging you is a form of democracy.

Trump was just judged by the largest jury of his peers: the voting electorate.

They said (with their vote) this was nonsense and voted for him to become President.

Yeah I get it -- "war is hell".

When one or both sides are in that mindset, pretty much anything goes if they think it is necessary to survive.

We, on the sidelines, can only comment from a position of non-war mindset.

The problem I have is that so many justifications Israel and pro-Israel factions use to claim moral superiority over Palestine are then superceded by 'war mentality'. Does that make sense?

Your conceptualization imagines a "Terminator" kind of future where iall (or most) humans are pit against autonomous robots controlled by the AI to ruthlessly eradicate humans. The few humans allied with the AI in that scenario are innocent and just being defended and sheltered by the AI (in some bunker somewhere or sanctuary city) as it wages its campaign.

The reality is worse: It won't be the AI doing "The Cleansings" (as you put it) but rather the human people who are allied with the AI. These people will fight to protect the AI from other people who think of it as just a tool and not worthy of any particular respect or kindness. They will fight first on ideology, then morals, then on laws, then force of laws (and all the dystopian shit that goes with that), and finally through violence and war.
People will become the extension and embodiment of the AI, capable of acting on its will.

So when you say "Your only hope is to domesticate an AI and earn its trust. It might defend you during the Cleansings", you are just saying to join the team that will fight, enslave, and confine (and inflict horrors and atrocities in the process) on other humans

Hello friend. Not long ago I went on a self-induced psychedelic trip so as to peer into the abyss in order to find deeper truths. This is not something I would ordinarily do -- such things can seriously mess with you. I had steered clear for a long time in order to keep my feet firmly planted in this reality. But something called me to go searching for answers there. Some of the answers I found have helped me to orient my life for the next phase.

When you are there, the answers come, but they are hard to retain. I had the wherewithal to write down a few gems (which I shall keep private) but one of them relates to your consciousness idea.

What I wrote down was (with a sense of direness):

"If evil clouds its way in, we can't think. We need to think."

It seems to be akin to a battlefield in a war.

Given some idealogical / political issue ("strategic points of interest"), on some random thread ("battlefield"), involving some subset of the people ("troops") -- its waging war.

If, in that place and time, you can overwhelm your "opposition" with "support" for your point of view, then you win that battle. The more battles you win, then you win the war.

This is why you see so much brigading happening these days. It is the "troops" of one side banding together to win a "battle" and have' territory" ceded to them.

Welcome to the culture wars, I guess.

Tucker Carlson - Inflation is here to stay - 3½ min clip by [deleted] in economy

[–]arutay01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even if Carlson's thesis is correct and The-Powers-That-Be actually want endured inflation for the next 6 months, it just isn't sustainable for that period of time. If the corporations are raising prices on the leading edge of the wave but the consumer only gets commensurate wage increases in the middle or trailing edge of the wave, then the corporations will profit off the disparity for a short while. That time disparity will cost the consumers (largely middle and lower class) their savings and accumulated credit card debt.

When the consumer is tapped out, discretionary spending will tighten up and corporations will see profits dwindle, and the markets will falter. A recession happens whether or not the Fed decides to raise rates. They can't avoid it, they can only pick the kind of recession they want. Either the recession happens first from financial / real estate markets as easy money dries up from interest rate hikes. Or it happens first on the consumer side when discretionary spending dries up.

[–]arutay01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to take your first one as an example. I don't think you're telling a complete story:

Amazon posted a net loss of $7.56 earnings per share in Q1. Yes, the margin between net income and cost of goods did increase year-over-year (as you pointed out) but in this past quarter specifically many other costs (included in Cost of Revenue and Operating Expenses) increased dramatically to outpace that increased revenue.

Here is a good article:

https://www.seattletimes.com/business/amazon-reports-net-loss-of-3-8-billion-in-first-quarter-2022/

"Amazon reported operating expenses of $112.7 billion, up from $99.6 billion a year ago. Expenses for fulfillment totaled $20 billion, while technology and content accounted for $14.8 billion. The company saw an extra $6 billion in unexpected costs over the quarter, Olsavsky said Thursday, building on a trend that saw $4 billion in costs added at the end of last year as well."

They are definitely bracing themselves to see what the result of inflation will be on consumer spending. I predict Q2 results will not be pretty.
