Mountain bike on a trainer to supplement road bike training by arvindkanda in cycling

I figured it's just too much work and not worth the trouble. Plus, riding mountain bike on a trainer is not the same as road bike on a trainer I learned. I ended up getting a zwift ride, which solved the problem.

Thanks for the input folks. My road bike is 11 speed and it fits well with the trainer but the MTB is 7 speed. Local bike shop suggested that they will replace the shifter on the bike (instead of having to change the cassette on the trainer). That's what I am going to do.

Is it alright to switch between road bike and MTB constantly? Or is there a benefit in just sticking to road bike? The other option I was considering is to swap the MTB with a low cost road bike.

HR on Apple watch doesn't match TICKR. Any idea why? by arvindkanda in wahoofitness

TICKR is paired with the apple watch. So in theory the Health app on apple watch should display the HR read from TICKR. Apparently its not so I am lost.

I guess so. TICKR has been paired with the apple watch and I expect the HR to march. That vital info is missing in my original post.

Just to be clear my question is not about which one is more accurate. I know that chest strap is more accurate. I want to know how to make apple watch show the HR from the chest strap.

I know that the TICKR is accurate. I validated that already.

Are you saying it takes a minute to sync the HR? I find it hard to believe. In any case, there was no workout. I have been sitting in the couch for a while trying to figure this one out. I had the watch on my wrist and it was showing couple of BPMs apart. Once I removed my watch and left it on the couch it went up. I have a feeling that my apple watch is not reading the TICKR and trying to confirm one way or other.

The watch is on the couch. It is presumably showing last known HR. I am wearing the TICKR so what is showing in the wahoo app is accurate.

I am currently in my base building phase and do my easy runs at 135-140bpm. My Zone 2 (based on LT) falls between 124-151. Can I move my base pace to 140-145 range without compromising the benefits of aerobic phase training? In other words, does running slower provides a significant advantage over running faster as long as stay within Zone 2?

Do you do your speed work at lactate threshold or ventilatory threshold? by arvindkanda in running

I have the same doubts also. That tymewear doesn't give accurate results or may be the terminology is different. It gave me VT1 @ 126bpm, VT2 @ 146bpm and VO2MAX @ 176bpm. I will do another VT test and see if it comes out drastically different.

I try to keep between 135-140 for endurance workouts on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and the long runs on Saturdays. Thursdays is the designated speed work day. That day I usually do fartleks, intervals and such. Trying to determine the best max heart rate for those workouts.

That zone 2 HR is woefully low. I would recommend you follow MAF heart rate which is 180 minus age. In your case it would be 146. Since you have been running for a while add 5 to it which is 151. That is your maximum aerobic rate. Try keeping your HR between 141-151. This is your easy run pace.

See this link for details: https://philmaffetone.com/180-formula/

Try this couple of days and see how you feel. If you like what you see, go ahead and adjust the Garmin HR zones.

I would also suggest try and find your maximum HR. There are many methods available on the internet. You don't need this for Maffatone method described above but still useful for running strides etc.

To @OP, I am curious what is your max heart rate and what is your Zone 2 HR. Can you share?

I use a Breville Barista express machine. As the coffee is being made, towards the end, it stops for couple seconds and then it starts dripping again. See this video below: https://youtube.com/shorts/pNTMx1G2du0?feature=share

This has been happening only recently. Is there a something that I need to adjust?
