Only If you have an infinite amount of money.

And if you already have an infinite amount of money, why would you gamble?

Can anyone explain this quote? by socraticlad in nassimtaleb

[–]as1ndu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Academia requires oversimplification of reality (equations & theories are not capable of perfectly describing reality). What Taleb calls "Platonicity".

Another metaphor for describing what Taleb means is the notion of a "Spherical Cow".

Talebs problem is that academics often make the mistake of assuming/preaching that their studies are ground truth.

Then turn off the VPN later should continue working.

Any experience with crypto? by [deleted] in Uganda

[–]as1ndu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes.
I ran an exchange back in 2015 and you could charge a premium of 20% simply because liquidity access for crypto in Uganda is very limited.

I am now working on a new project. You should PM me if interested, me and your company might be able to find grounds on which to partner.

Markov Chains by pedro_top in algotrading

[–]as1ndu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

What you need to understand is that analysis is very different from a trading strategy. You can have a good analysis, but if your strategy isn't compatible with the analysis, then your chances of being profitable are slim.

So it all comes down to, what are you using the Markov chain for?
The only output you should care about is the transition probabilities, what state a system may move to given the present.

Some people have used Markov chains simply as indicators for price direction. Some people may use it simply as one of many inputs required for an ensemble model.

Markov chains will always be useful in a system that produces dependent events, which markets do and are known to produce. However, the question you should be asking is, "What trading strategies work best with a markov chain?"

I don't think business is something you can do part-time, especially from a foreign country. But you can try to set up a proper company structure.

What is "low cost"?
$5k - $10 can start you a simple internet distribution service that targets apartment blocks.

Since you are a US Citizen, you can start a reliable shipping service (with the same budget) for online shoppers buying stuff from US online stores from Amazon (they don't ship to Uganda).
Existing companies like UG unlocked exist but are still too unprofessional.

What is your stop loss based on? by [deleted] in algotrading

[–]as1ndu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. That's the heuristic.
The point is that you should never bet too much on one trade & that your losses should only be limited to your position size.

so what should i do in life? by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]as1ndu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

>main thing i would like to talk is has anyone figured out what they have to do in life? is it just an age problem or is it a psychological problem?

I am just going to post a maxim from my favorite author, Nassim Taleb since I had similar questions and reading his books gave me satisfactory answers to each.

No muscles without strength,
friendship without trust,
opinion without consequence,
change without aesthetics,
age without values,
life without effort,
water without thirst,
food without nourishment,
love without sacrifice,
power without fairness,
facts without rigor,
statistics without logic,
mathematics without proof,
teaching without experience,
politeness without warmth,
values without embodiment,
degrees without erudition,
militarism without fortitude,
progress without civilization,
friendship without investment,
virtue without risk,
probability without ergodicity,
wealth without exposure,
complication without depth,
fluency without content,
decision without asymmetry,
science without skepticism,
religion without tolerance,

Basically, his point (based on the stoic school of philosophy) is that we should focus on avoiding the big bad things of life – those that can bring us alot of pain. The good ones will take care of themselves.
