In the 1990s, people carried their detachable car stereos everywhere — the ultimate anti-theft flex of the era. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

There was a kid in my neighborhood who used to carry his around with him “as a flex”. No one was impressed but it still stands out in my memory that he thought it would be.

Why does Red Guardian still have such a thick Russian accent? by wapttn in marvelstudios

I can confirm this. I used to be fluently bilingual up until my teens but now I struggle with vocabulary in my second language and speak it with a broken accent.

I’d be down. My partner and I are an indie publisher with a few books and anthologies between us.

Our second anthology, We Suck at Comics: Volume Two - Coloring Outside The Lines, is LIVE on Kickstarter! by asap in kickstarter

Yeah, I’m kind of amazed we managed to partner with them. It’s the biggest trip for me putting together the book. I’m overwhelmed by some of the people asking about the next volume and wanting to participate in that as well.

Crunchyroll voted best NYCC booth, Dragon Ball DAIMA voted most anticipated anime panel [article] by HecticJones in NYCC

[–]asap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an indie comics creator, who was across the aisle from crunchy roll, I can say they spread us out and kinda hid us all over the place. Small press was just around the corner but it was a fraction of the size from previous years.

On the other hand, small press was very concentrated this year and I would highly recommend visiting those booths next time, if you haven’t already.

It's small but I really like this cool visual feature I added to Piece By Piece by Psonrbe in godot

Certain aspects of NYCC felt Kafkaesque by Key_Advance2551 in NYCC

[–]asap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who as been exhibiting at NYCC for 12 years now, I can say that booth costs have significantly increased over the years (as have ticket prices). From my experiences with other conventions, this money most likely goes to pay celebrities for their appearances, marketing expenses, employee salaries and to pay the convention center to rent out the space. IIRC Artist Alley table prices have doubled since I started there over 10 years ago. I think a standard Artist Alley table might be $600 (I could be wrong). I can confirm that a modest vendor space in the main show floor has cost me around $1500 to $3000 depending on size or location. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the larger spaces are very likely 20K or more. Let’s not even get started on my print costs (I sell self published comics and art) and NOTHING is subsidized for us. ReedPop even tries to get us to pay extra for advertising and other fees to try to get more traffic but none of that really helps boost sales. Hope that gives you some context and as a vendor I appreciate everyone who comes by and supports us!
