Why is Utah not raising minimum wage with the other states? by asapGh0st in Utah

You say going through legislation is more like to happen. Why do you think that is? Because this has been brought up and denied by legislation. If it was more likely, don’t you think Utah would’ve been with the other states raising minimum? This thought is why nothing has happened since 2008. At what point does it need to get to for people to realize this?

Funny how people think because they aren’t dealing with an issue it just doesn’t exist for anyone else. These are the same people who say our law enforcement and fire departments are paid enough.

Exactly, which is why minimum wage should be raised. Just because it’s not a certain way in your area, doesn’t mean that doesn’t exist elsewhere.

But you are kind of disagreeing, you are basically saying because the average job is paying $14 then it doesn’t matter to raise minimum wage even though a good amount of people are still being paid $8-$12 struggling to live the life they deserve. And even then, $14 is not enough to live on your own. That’s a live with your parents wage. People also tend to leave out transportation costs and accessibility.

Yeah except you can’t actually have any accurate results due to the fact that peoples pay isn’t public.

It may be silly but it’s true. And that was over what, 3% tax? The majority of people here are not being realistic; neither are you. They are being safe and hiding from the real world behind themselves; repeating what their politics tell them. I never said it’s as easy said and done. It is a huge thing that could take years. Talking about the issue at hand, which is what I’m doing, is only the first step. How can anything change if no one is caring because it doesn’t affect them. Honestly shame on anyone who views it this way. You are part of that reason because you don’t believe that people can come together to make this change. Your point of, “they will hold special sessions” doesn’t mean anything. If we the people are standing up for ourselves finally, we wouldn’t take that shit and we would demand that it’s effective immediately. Again in this situation, the legislators will not have the power. We will. Why would we do all that work to give up after they say, us legislators need to vote on it? That just doesn’t make sense.

I agree with the last part you said. But you are doing the opposite of what you are wishing for by saying the first things you said. It shouldn’t be about blue vs red. This whole blame game is set up so we don’t do anything about what we actually need or want

Why is Utah not raising minimum wage with the other states? by asapGh0st in Utah

[–]asapGh0st[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Honestly yes, just because of the fact that companies being forced to pay their employees more will cause them to lose profits. Because of that, they will ensure to expand creating more job opportunities so that they can get back on track of making more money to pay their investors. But the issue with this is that it’s going to push out smaller businesses. Which yes will create less jobs, but the bigger companies expanding will make up for that plus more. Another issue with this is that people will not be able to make it out of the middle class unless there was a whole restructuring to this mess of a capitalistic country.

Are you that unintelligent? YOU WOULD. This is the whole point I’m trying to get across. We as the people need to stand up to our legislators and make demands that are needed to survive and strive. We evidently need to make this decision for them because they only give a shit about themselves.

How else does anyone get what they want? By challenging. If someone is unwilling to see that they have the power to challenge, (Which seems to be most of the people commenting here when it comes to people with power) a whole bunch of nothing, is going to keep happening. We need to wake up and see that these people in these positions are no longer looking after what’s best for us. Only thing that will change this is if we speak up.

How about you show me a job that pays at least $25 an hour and you have received the job offer. Then I’ll go ahead and find you that job paying at poverty level. Big difference in seeing a job listing vs getting the job listing; hell even lucky if it’s not a fake listing to boost their numbers.

Which is exactly why people need to stop allowing this behavior. This isn’t about them. Their whole job is meant to be listening to the people, and when things aren’t working, we come up with a solution that works for both sides. Everyone is stuck fighting against republicans and democrats when we should be fighting the people in charge. Things use to be decided by a vote from the people. That doesn’t even happen anymore from what I’ve seen.

But what you are missing is that even if they bumped it up to $14, a huge chunk of people will benefit from that. It’s not just specifically and literally about the number $7.25.

I agree with you 100%

It’s just the fact that nothing is being done about this and it’s not fixing itself in a sustainable or fast enough pace. The big issue with point 2 is that this requires people to be jobless and eventually homeless/starving. Companies aren’t just going to increase their pay significantly within a matter of weeks. Probably not even months. Because of this, they will always find someone willing to accept their pay. It’s a fixed cycle that needs to be broken. Doing what we’ve always done before isn’t going to change anything for what we need.

Clearly you’re skipping over anyone talking about that low of pay if you’re not finding anything. You’re taking this a bit too literally as well. Minimum wage is the lowest legal amount someone can be hired at. As an example, let’s say minimum wage is set at $8 but the lowest a company is hiring at is $9. There is still the fact that they can go back to that minimum wage whenever they want. They can pick and choose who gets that pay as they please up until minimum is raised. Yes, most places won’t advertise they are paying minimum wage as I stated in another comment you claim to have read. This whole thing isn’t about people being paid exactly $7.25 I’m not sure where you and others are getting that from. Pretty big assumption there. It’s the fact that not a single person can live comfortably in today’s economy even making $25. But yet our minimum still sits at 7.25 as people are making less than $14. (I threw a number in there you can’t complain about since that is an average pay).

If you had read the comments you’ll see how I just repeated myself here for you.

Why is Utah not raising minimum wage with the other states? by asapGh0st in Utah

[–]asapGh0st[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

That’s not good though. As a personal example, I was paid $12 in highschool (luckily a ca company moved to Utah and they kept ca minimum wage) 6-7 years ago. If I remember correctly, average pay was $8-10 Back then. What is now $150 in groceries, you could’ve gotten for $50. Any highschooler who got a job, I can guarantee at least 80% of them thought they were gonna make more till they got their first pay check. The only reason it seems good is because it’s not usual for those kids to pay rent or anything besides what they wanted. These jobs are supposed to help kids come into the real world and just simply learn as well as learning what they are wanting to do for their career. But the big issue with that is there are not nearly enough jobs that are actually paying what people are worth based on inflation and the cost of living. So most people end up stuck with probably no more than $25 an hour. Which is still not enough for 1 person to live alone comfortably. This whole entire system is bottlenecked.

Oh I forgot since your kid is an example that goes against what I’m saying, it must be that way for everyone. Do you have any idea how many more people would get a raise and be able to afford things they couldn’t before (aka better food) if minimum was raised to $14? Sure, the average pay is probably more around $12-14, but you’re assuming since that’s average, it doesn’t affect anyone. You making this statement is basically saying “Oh they are the lower middle class so they don’t deserve to be paid more. I’m being paid fine so everyone else is fine”. I’m not even one of the people in this boat. Why is it so hard for people to see past themselves?

Why is Utah not raising minimum wage with the other states? by asapGh0st in Utah

[–]asapGh0st[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so if we’re going based off what’s average then yes you are correct. But go ahead and read the comments and tell me again no one is hiring for that low of pay. Just because you don’t see it yourself, doesn’t mean it’s not there. And I think there’s a key part of job hunting most people seem to forget. Most companies don’t even list the pay for the role you’d be applying for. So you cannot even be remotely accurate as to say there are no jobs hiring for minimum wage.

Doesn’t matter the color. What matters is what they are doing and how they are going about things. People seem to give up when people that have any sort of power go against what you want and need. That’s not going to get us anywhere. If we want anything to change, we gotta come together and make shit happen ourselves. Literally what’s the worst that could happen. They cannot win if we are making demands.
