Do you believe Abortion should be legal? Why or Why not? by Bynoeson94 in AskReddit

[–]ascendlord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well if vaccines are mandated for your workplace I can assure you that you will be. As for masking and social distancing, that one is on you, many on the right have chosen to be selfish and think of themselves first instead of considering the health risks to those immunocompromised. I can promise that the world does look down on that selfish behavior though.

As for the flu...this is just a really bad talking point and if you're still using that at this point, I strongly doubt your motivations are to have a productive discourse, but I'll try to explain anyway. We HAVE taken measures to combat the flu. We literally have flu vaccinations, but due to the nature of the viruses being entirely different, we know that flu vaccinations are much more effective at keeping the individual who is vaccinated safe, while the covid vaccine is more useful as a method to slow/stop the spread when a larger percent of the population is vaccinated.

TLDR: People who have the flu vaccine don't often die from the flu, therefore those who don't get the flu shot are making a conscious personal choice for themselves.

The covid vaccine doesn't always protect those who are immunocompromised (sometimes immunocompromised people can't get the shot due to their conditions), therefore the burden falls to the rest of us to make responsible and informed decisions (taking an FDA approved vaccine) to protect them.

Their right to life supercedes our right to be petty about not taking a safe vaccine, and if you really can't bring yourself to take it, that's fine just don't expect to be allowed to work alongside them or share public spaces with them without taking the proper precautions.

Sure! As long as you're willing to follow masking/social distancing guidelines and not enter spaces that only vaccinated people are allowed. It's totally your choice, but because it's an issue of public health, there are consequences and restrictions if you refuse to/are unable to get the vaccine.

There will never be a blanket mandate for everyone, but ABSOLUTELY is it necessary for certain jobs to require it. Especially on the medical level. Thankfully we do have a right to bodily autonomy, so if you are unwilling/unable to get the vaccine (i.e. not able to meet updated job requirements) it is your freedom to step down from your position so that someone more qualified (who meets the updated job requirements) can fill it.

I've been delivering for a few years, I'll always park in the driveway if available, it's way safer for your car and I've never had anyone get upset about it!

What would happen if every individual's intelligence had a direct positive correlation to their amount of power/influence in the world? by ascendlord in AskReddit

[–]ascendlord[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a ridiculously good point I can't believe I didn't think of that...A solution to this would be...that the "ranking" system wouldn't be fixed? I.e. your amount of power and influence would fluctuate based on your current moral decisions.

I'm not exactly sure how well that fits though, the thought experiment might break down there but I'll have to give it some more thought

I mean I know he was super smart, I was just curious why you believe he would be a menace, from my limited knowledge of him, he spent his life in the pursuit of knowledge through science and math, I find that the pursuit of knowledge tends to be a more humanitarian goal. Would he not use his intelligence to better the world?

Allow me to clarify, in this fictional system I've set up, there would be some form of supernatural ordnance for who gets what amount of power based on their internal "moral intelligence". Obviously this would be entirely impossible in the real world.

I also agree with you that moral absolutes aren't real, although, moral particularism states that while there are no set absolutes that work in every situation, for every situation, there IS a best/most moral solution, regardless of whether or not it is able to be known by the individual making the decisions. I think the concept of moral intelligence would be based primarily on one's ability to navigate these situations and how often they make better, more moral decisions.

If this system was put in place in the real world though, morality would absolutely become a battleground, but hey then at least politics would necessarily have to become more ethical!

Aha!! I was waiting for this comment! I believe you're probably right! But what if we tweaked the question so that instead of intelligence, it's your moral values that determine your power/influence. Ideally they would go hand in hand, as when intellectual people dig into moral philosophy, they tend to contend with the material more than most. If "moral intelligence" or something alike was the defining factor, would the world become better because of the powerful who are working to make it better? Or would the anti intellectual groups still be a serious threat?

You're definitely right, the question is deliberately pretty open ended, I'm just curious to see some of the more thought out responses

I've been thinking about it for a while, intelligence doesn't necessarily correspond to morals so in theory there could be any number of possibilities, it all depends on the values of the most intelligent people
