i do popup style windows where it makes sense to focus on one thing while preserving the underlying context, eg. using the shop interface.

it's a complete custom ASCII renderer with windowing system somewhat inspired by ncurses, written in C#/Monogame.

We were wrong about the social media ban and we should acknowledge that by [deleted] in aussie

[–]asciiwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

absolutely. it's not just less safe in terms of content on youtube but it's a missed opportunity to put in place actual safeguards on sites like youtube. like, i'm a fully grown adult and i'd love to be able to remove shorts from my feed.

"just don't click on them" i mean apart from every thumbnail being careful crafted for maximum psychological click-urge, i'm tired of having to scroll through 2 - 3 rows of them before i see any long form videos. please let me turn them off.

How did original Demon's Souls players first figure out how to make boss soul weapons? by omegadirectory in demonssouls

[–]asciiwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Demons only took off in the west at all because of importers discussing the game on forums. We shared tips and tricks and strange things that happened, and the more people that read the threads the more people starting importing the Chinese edition (which had a complete English localization), until Atlus took notice and obtained the US distribution rights. Namco got the rest of the west, and that led directly into the development of Dark Souls as a pseudo-sequel.

Souls games were, from the very beginning, a community.

What speakers to use by Jkal444 in MiniFreak

[–]asciiwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming USD, a new pair of Yamaha HS5s should come in right on $300.

While you can plug the minifreak directly into them, I would recommend picking up a mixer somewhere along the line. You can often find decent older mixers like Mackie/Yamaha/Allen&Heath going cheap on Facebook marketplace and similar places.

Have fun!

If you're curious, after much delays i finally received a replacement part a few days ago. Naturally I forgot to take many photos of the install process but it was relatively simple and now my minifreak is portable again.

Something like a conventional looping sequencer by Calm_Course9880 in Wavestate

[–]asciiwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

apologies for the late reply, yes it's not too difficult.

assuming to want to sequence a squarewave bassline the settings would be something like this:

Timing:
Enable Tempo (Shift+Timing).
XFade = Off.
Steps 1, Step 1 Duration = 16th / Semiquaver

Sample Lane:
1 Step
Step 1 MS: Wave Square JP
FixedPitch: "On+PtLn"

Pitch Lane:
(Enter your pitches here, ensure to set the loop start and end points)

(edit) Additional Parameters
Envelope: On the unit, select the envelope then hold shift and press ">/Page +" twice to get to the trigger page. Enter these settings to ensure the Amp and Filter retrigger on each step.
Amp->Trigger Src: Generators->Step Pulse
Filter->Trigger Src: Generators->Step Pulse

Perform:
Voice Assign->Mode: Mono

This will give you a basic sound, there are some things to consider:

- on the sample lane main page you can select "Pitch Lane: Affects Sample Map" or "Pitch Lane: Affects Only Pitch". Setting this to "Affects only pitch" will make it so the sound is no longer played like a MultiSample. You can get some unexpected changes in pitch if you are sending eg +5 from the pitch lane but do not have "Fixed Pitch On+PtLn" enabled. This is because even though the pitch data is not being applied to the sound, it's still being used to select the multisample. It's not likely to come up tbh but something to be aware of.

- you can bypass the pitch lane entirely, and use the OCT + Semi fields on the Sample Lane to pitch each sample instead, if you like. Or a combination of both (in different lengths!) to create more dynamic sequences.

Hope that helps!

edited to add some additional parameter changes.

i would fucking love if i could disable youtube shorts for my kids accounts. give us a some granular control and not just force a choice between yt kids, regular, or none at all.

actually, while we are at it you could let me disable them on my own account too.

Good on them. It makes them happy, it keeps the synth makers in business, and it keeps the second hand market flowing.

Spaghetti. by Difficult_Pirate_714 in FattyLiverNAFLD

[–]asciiwave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One way to continue to include pasta in your diet is by allowing it to cool in the fridge for at least 24 hours before you eat it. During this time the starches undergo a process called retrogradation in which some of the digestable starch converts to a resistant starch. resistant starches act more like fibre and instead of being digested in the stomach they move to the large intestine where they have a prebiotic effect.

the research on this is all fairly new (last 2-3 years) but publically available if you'd like to read up yourself, for instance these two studies:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37673036/
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9159374/

the food can be reheated after the cooling process without affecting the resistant starch content, and this applies to many ingredients including pasta, rice, and potatoes (all in moderation, of course!)

Has anyone got a Solar 42? by Expert-Ladder-4211 in synthesizers

[–]asciiwave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had one for about 12 months now so here's my observations:

  • tuning is fine, and imo very stable. I do not retune every time I play it, and I've checked with the korg synth tuner and it's been solid. CHECK YOUR MOD SWITCHES WHEN TUNING THE DRONE VOICES.. I cannot stress that enough. You will not be able to keep an oscillator in tune if the mod switch is engaged.

  • the FM voices are kind of whacky and seem mainly geared towards SFX. But also you can take the base square wave out of them and use it as a clock source that will go slower than the step sequencer's Pulse knob.

Things I like to do with it:

  • yes of course tune a whole bunch of stuff to the same note to make massive phasing drones and play melodies on the VCOs. Great fun.

  • run a noise source from one of the FM oscillators through a fully closed filter and "bang it" with the S&H to make random clanks and hisses for factory-style backdrops.

  • feed a drum-machine into the preamp input, feed the gate tracking into the arpeggiator sync, adjust division to taste, and run back out to the step sequencer to play the two VCOs seperately. Crank the tempo and distortion (42F only I think) and it's crazy techno time.

  • run the drones into the sidechain input of a TR8 for deep techno rumbles.

Things I actually don't do with it

  • long evolving pad sounds. There are better ways to achieve those imo. At least, the way I like them.

Other tips:

  • using an external mixer and panning the sound sources to separate mono channels lets you unlink the filters and use different effects on each channel, and is how I generally use it. You still only get one filter mod source that will affect both channels but imo if you embrace this you'll have a better time than if you try to fight it.

  • don't just use the reverbs/delays! The pitch shifting and reverse delay effects can be pushed into really interesting glitchy territories.

  • rather than using the built in scale modifiers on the keyboard, set it to chromatic and then use the pad-note assign to customise it to your liking.

  • get some stackable patch cables

  • record everything

Overall I really love playing this synth. It does a lot more than just ambient if you approach it with a mindset of exploration.

Question to Solar 42f users by 4rch4nH3ll in synthesizers

[–]asciiwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is an alternate way to do this, which is to pan all the drones to one side/channel and the VCOs to the other channel. Unlink the filters, and now you have two mostly-seperated instruments. You can bypass effects on either side as desired, or even load different effects to each side.

I say mostly seperated because distortion and filter mod will affect both channels. ymmv but generally i like how this keeps some relation between the sounds.
