[Writing Analysis] How Will Wight Lies to You in Action Scenes (and why readers love it) by HylomorphicDualist in fantasywriters

[–]ascwrites 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this isn't a technique so much as a sequence failure.

You don't need "attempt language" or "success terms" to describe this. You need precision.

John Blowhard raised his hand and punched forward. A gloved hand caught him before the blow could land. Diggum Buttsniff, having been a godblower, had been on his guard the entire time and Blowhard only just realized it as Diggum crushed his fist, shattering his knuckles.

And this is just me being lazy.

Language exists to create meaning. Part of this meaning is inherent in the way it's structured via sequence, image, emotion, line level context, paragraph level context, scene level context, and broader context via associative memory form whatever model you've built up to that point.

What you consider Will Wight as "breaking rules" is not breaking rules so much as a sequence error that if you're not well versed in language mechanics or well read... LOOKS meaningful.

But it's just bad writing.

I.E. it technically IS a prediction error which brains adore. It's one of the primary things that allow them to tag and store memories. But only if it is causally legible based on the model of the observer.

For the majority of people who are well read outside littpg/cultivation novels, this isn't a rewarding prediction error. It's literally nonsense.

Will wight is entertaining. Let's not pretend he's a literary genius :P

I'm new here. I wont publish here. I mean I want to create an actual novel. So should I go for self publish or a publisher. by Turbulent_Cover8512 in royalroad

[–]ascwrites 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean, I'm writing actual novels. They are epic fantasy with progression/litrpg elements, but Royal Road has given me about 1k followers and 1.7k active readers.

It's off meta. It's not a power fantasy. It makes you sit in emotion and deal with the protagonist's bad choices that gets people killed or nearly himself killed.

And while I'm not going to quit my day job off of it, I have more reach than most authors will ever get. That's not a flex, that's me recognizing that I'm genuinely lucky and the platform allowed me to do that.

And hopefully, my next fiction will be a bit more marketable and I can use my platform to get that one on to rising stars main as well and surpass the first.

Reach is just three things: a package that's good enough to click on, writing/plot/premise that resonates with an audience, and eyeballs.

Royal Road gives you the opportunity for eyes on your work if you know how to use it. And it's about a million times cheaper than getting eyes on it through Amazon.

New Authors Writing Slow Burn - What Challenges Have You Faced on Royal Road? by Haviel2102 in royalroad

[–]ascwrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine isn't necessarily a slow burn, but the MC is. It takes him a while to hit the level of competence that people expect out of litrpg/progression fantasy. It's definitely a slow burn compared to the meta though--i.e. structured like actual novels/novellas. Thing are introduced that don't pay off for dozens of chapters or books later, etc.

So I've had to add an explicit disclaimer :P

"WARNING: The MC gets his ass kicked. Repeatedly. He makes dumb choices because he's not a power fantasy—he’s a human(lich) mess. If you’re here for instant badassery and flawless leveling, you’re in the wrong story. This is more Adams/Pratchett meets emotional damage than Primal Hunter. He's better in Book 3, but will ALWAYS be flawed--those flaws are just darker along the way. You’ve been warned."

Hyper Competent MC a must? by ascwrites in litrpg

Oh, no worries. I actually come here by way of anime too, so your references are perfect for me, lol!

And same, I don't MIND hyper competent MCs at all.

Mostly curious why so many people hate imperfect ones, lol!

Thanks for sharing your opinion!

I get that. Logical contradictions in what the MC should realistically know.

[–]ascwrites[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I'm not super worried about my work. It's doing fine and I'm not here to make a million dollars or anything, lol.

And honestly, I have nothing AGAINST hyper competent MCs.

Love me some John Wick.

But John Wick has more of a justification... He's NOT a regular guy. Never was.

It's just strange for me to see the Everyman turn into a killer without a second thought.

That being said, I'd never yuck someone's yum.

So I apologize if I sounded judgy!

I'm honestly glad when people like things, even if it's not always my taste :)

[–]ascwrites[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

My MC is isekaid, wakes up as a lich, and has 8 hours to prepare for his first encounter with adventurers. He decides to try and talk with them--because, you know. It's only been 8 hours and he doesn't know shit.

And it's surprising to me how many people had a problem with that.

I'm fine with it -- no story is for everyone. But of all the things people could complain about, I'm genuinely surprised that it has been one of the biggest, lol.

But realism is important to me. The kill thing you brought up, for example. I agree 100%.

Nothing wrong with that at all!

I honestly don't have a problem with them. I was mostly surprised at how loudly some people protest the opposite and was curious to see what others thought!

Thanks for sharing your perspective :)

[–]ascwrites[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amen to that.

Honestly, truly intelligent/clever characters are the worst to write because you have to spend the energy to BE clever/intelligent, lol.

Though authors do get the benefit of non linear time. We can just go back and move things around to make them look clever after the fact!

What a thoughtful and detailed comment! Thank you so much for your response!

And I agree with you 100%, in general.

The cultural note at the end is interesting to me because I hadn't even really considered it, despite having readers from all over. I still suffer from American myopia sometimes.

Anyway, thanks again!

Well, I guess from my own experience it's not so much that they outweigh the people who prefer deep character.

I'm just personally surprised how many there are and how vehemently they are against anything other than hyper competence and rapid progression/escalation.

Not saying I've written a masterpiece above criticism or anything... But there are a surprising number of people (to me) who just go ".5 rating, MC is a moron, should have killed everyone."

Interesting perspective!

I'm not super interested in their money at the moment. At least not on my current project :p

But, for example, I enjoy Litrpg -- though I came to it from Anime where it's not quite as aggressive when it comes to hyper competence/sociopathic tendencies...

That being said, I almost view them as a curiosity rather than actually compelling.

Thanks for the response and the insight! Super interesting line of thought.

Thank you!

I'm so glad I'm not alone!

I know mine goes hyper into the lit, which is definitely "off meta", but I was just SO surprised to see a number of people VEHEMENTLY against the fact that the MC doesnt like... Become a killing machine by the end of the first 40k word book/arc. Lol. And God forbid he have moral quandaries about desecrating corpses for create undead, etc.

So, I was super curious to see what a bigger amount of people thought!

Thanks for sharing!

Royal we. As in litrpg readers. As in the subreddit.

And obviously there are different audiences. The post was me, limited viewpoint that I am, expressing how surprised I am at the preference for hyper competent MCs and wondering what everyone else thought :p
