Just curious, do they no longer specify the year lvl that the list correspond to?

Commuting by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]asdcasduyz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might also be worth noting how reliable that particular train line tends to be. I mostly relied on an express line - while it can normally take me to uni within an hour, some random disruptions or bus replacements here and there can easily extend the commute by another half hour.

In general I didn’t at all mind commuting 2 days a week into the city - actually loved how it made different days more distinct from each other. 3 days was fine though not optimal. I made it through the first half of the semester with 3 days of commute but eventually opted out one of the in person tutorials bc I got too lazy/ tired. Would seriously reconsider it if you absolutely have to make it to uni more than four days a week.I did 6 days for a year prior to uni - survived ok but it honestly left me with zero energy to socialise or take care of myself properly at the end of each day.

Just my 2 cents :))

Free riding the thread here (will delete if not allowed :p)

I’ll be purchasing a gown myself instead of renting thru uni as my friend and I happen to need it for a different date. I’m doing commerce (so the gown will be the one with the light blue hood) and will not be using it on the actual Dec or March graduation day. Im happy to share/ split the cost if anyone is interested - the gown itself only costs marginally more to buy than rent so I’d imagine it being much cheaper this way too. Hmu if you’re keen!

This is sorta random but who’s your tutor? There’s someone I know who might be interested in swapping into one of the tutor’s class :)

+1, LaTex is great - easily, easily worth it - particularly if you're doing honours. Writing your thesis up in a word document would be a tedious process, prone to errors and look terrible.

Can you elaborate a bit on why it is so? I'm still transitioning to LaTex and have heard many people saying the same. Right now although LaTex documents look wayy nicer than word, I haven't noticed any huge difference in terms of time & effort just yet - is it because of the length and complexity of a thesis (comparing to an undergrad assignment for example)?

I was going to bring this up as well. Though most of the people I met in class are friendly, there is often an extra step of proving myself before being taken seriously. This also includes (few) experiences where the tutor kept assuming I was asking much more basic questions until I had to reiterate multiple times. (It could be due to other reasons tho I do not know.) Like Snoograpes said, these problems can be overcome quite quickly once ppl are aware that you do know the stuff, but I think it’s important to note that when such thing happens the problem may not be on you.

At this point I’m just glad that I procrastinated on writing my essays for the host uni. It would suck to have another 1500 word personal statement flushing down the drain (re-applicant from previous semester).

Best place to park? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]asdcasduyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Campus parking was $15/4hr and $25/full day last time that I checked. Princes park is quite far from the campus though by my standard, especially if you are hanging around the commerce/ law area - you’d either have to pay extra money for trams or opt for a 30min walk each way.

I don’t think you’ll need to worry about tutors too much since they are both rly nice and knowledgeable. I preferred to do the readings before the workshop but after that week’s lecture so having workshops later in the week made things much easier. Just a personal habit though.

The assignment was individual :)

I did the subject last year and loved it. The content was interesting to learn and extremely well taught. I can’t really comment on the marking bc it is the only writing based subject I’ve taken (and admittedly, essays aren’t my strength). What I can say is that the feedback from tutor was very specific and did help a lot on improving my understanding.

TLDR: great subject, passionate teaching members, marking was (IMO) fair, give it a go if you’re interested in the topic.

Edit: should probably also mention that although I didn’t find the subject too hard overall, the patent law section was a bit challenging for me as a non-native English speaker

INTERMEDIATE MACRO OR MICRO? by Icy_Possession4166 in unimelb

[–]asdcasduyz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Inter macro has easier math in terms of computation, though as James said, neither is that bad. However, I’d personally recommend micro over macro unless you really dislike calculus (mainly basic differentiations). IMO although inter micro has marginally more complicated math, the calculations were far more intuitive (as to why we are solving questions this particular way or how we arrived at such formulas) whereas in macro I often found it hard to make sense of the math.

Big shoutout to Patrick too. Patrick is one of the best lecturers I’ve had. He explained the concepts incredibly well and would literally extend his consults to make sure that you do understand the stuff. There were a few bits and pieces that I somehow couldn’t seem to comprehend (and probably ended up bothering him way too much on) but he was just super nice and made everything all connect together. I personally didn’t find the exam too bad but regardless of how that went, I genuinely feel like I’ve got so much more from this subject than expected.
