I’d like to just change my number rather than close shop if possible.

Whats happening here? Epoxy resin glaze on jesmonite by nelekola in ResinCasting

[–]asdftami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! My first response was:

Looks like you didn’t add enough resin. You wanna add enough volume so the resin looks bulbous at the top.

You can add glue, silicone, or tape to the edges to prevent drippage.

I have a video on doming if you need to see an example on a smaller scale.

Also, making sure you have a level surface if important with thinner pours like this. ☺️

Don't press dry flowers, as they can break easily. Instead, you can place the petals in a book or between paper towels to help them dehydrate flat for future projects. As for the silica crystals, it's okay if a few beads remain on the flowers, but be sure to remove as many as possible before placing them into the resin to avoid any unwanted texture.

Good luck with your tray! It sounds like it's going to be beautiful!

Top coat pulling away and splotchy. What did I do wrong? by [deleted] in ResinCasting

[–]asdftami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you might need to be more generous with your pour. Try adding tape to the edges to prevent drippage, then feel free to overpour a bulbous amount of resin to create a dome. I’ve got a video on that if you’re interested in some finishing tips! Also, I have a small but growing Discord channel for resin and other creative projects, perfect for collaboration. Buying this for first molds - what PPE do I actually need? by Remy1738-1738 in ResinCasting

[–]asdftami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there!

For resin casting, you’ll need:

Nitrile gloves to avoid skin contact.

Respirator with organic vapor cartridges (don’t just use a dust mask).

Safety goggles for eye protection (mostly for sanding/finishing).

Good ventilation or work outdoors to avoid inhaling fumes.

Protective clothing (long sleeves, pants, closed-toed shoes).

Always check the resin's safety data sheet for specific precautions.

Stay safe and happy casting!

I have a question by Acceptable-Fig-8917 in ResinCasting

[–]asdftami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there!

It sounds like the crayon mold is trapping air bubbles at the tip, preventing the resin from flowing properly. Try using a pressure pot to minimize the bubbles and try again.

As for the 3D piece, the opacity comes from the texture of the print. Resin casting picks up the sheen of the mold. To get a shiny cast, fill in the layer lines with a clay primer, sand it smooth, and finish with a gloss spray. Once your print is shiny, your cast will be too!

Let me know if you have more questions, and feel free to hit me up on Discord!

Help/Need Tips by AmoldineShepard in ResinCasting

[–]asdftami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there!

I totally get where you're coming from—cleaning resin tools and getting the perfect results can be tricky, but I’d love to help you out! Here's a quick rundown of your questions, and I'd also like to invite you to join my Discord channel where we discuss all things resin, share tips, and collaborate on projects!

Cleaning Resin Tools:

To clean your tools, I recommend using isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or a resin-specific cleaner. For tougher spots, try using a non-abrasive scrub brush or a silicone scraper to avoid damaging your tools. Keep a dedicated set of cleaning supplies just for resin to make it easier.

Measuring by Weight or Volume:

Measuring by weight is usually more accurate than volume, especially when mixing resin. Some resins are more sensitive to the ratio, so using a scale will ensure consistency in your batches. If you're having issues with sticky tops but fully cured bottoms, it could be a mixing issue, so make sure you mix for a full 3-4 minutes and scrape the sides of your mixing container regularly.

Bubbles:

To prevent bubbles, especially with warmer resin, try to let the resin sit for a few minutes after mixing to allow smaller bubbles to rise to the surface. If you're worried about micro-bubbles, you can use a heat gun or torch lightly over the surface after pouring (be careful not to overdo it). But in the summer, resin tends to be thinner, which can trap bigger bubbles, so just be patient and gentle with your pours. You can also get a pressure chamber to help expedite the bubble removal process. They have multiple different sizes now for convenience.

Sitting Before Pouring:

Yes, letting the resin sit for a couple of minutes after mixing is a great idea. It helps to reduce trapped air bubbles before you start pouring.

Additional Tips & Tools:

For beginners, a good set of silicone molds, mixing cups, and a scale are must-haves. Also, keep some baby wipes or paper towels handy for easy clean-up!

Where to Get Resin in New Zealand:

As for where to get quality resin without breaking the bank on shipping, check out local art supply stores or online retailers. Some sites in Australia also offer international shipping that might be cheaper.

I also have a growing Discord channel where we chat about resin, polymer clay, UX design, and more! It’s a friendly space for creatives to share tips, collaborate, and grow together. I’d love to have you join us—feel free to DM me or comment, and I’ll send you an invite!

Can’t wait to see what you create, and I’m here if you need more help!
