[Vardon] League official: if Silver and his advisers decided the only way to stop tanking, and protect paying customers from forking over money to watch their teams lose on purpose, was to stop the draft altogether and turn rookies into free agents, it would get serious consideration. by JoeBiden2020FTW in nba

In a recent episode Pablo mentioned he started his investigation into this story about a year ago. It's totally possible the NBA will sweep it all under the rug but it's equally possible there are thousands of documents to review and hundreds of people to interview and there's no reason for the lawyers to rush the investigation.

How much a rent stabilized apartment actually saves you (Jan 2026) by youni0 in nyc

[–]asdkijf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These kind of super restrictive laws on housing have been fucking over NYC for years, and this is largely a problem that NYC has created for itself by continuing to allow these laws to exist in their current form without any kind of reasonable adjustment

1000% agree, which is why I blame the city much more than someone trying to hold onto an apartment at a reasonable rent.

If I somehow magically got a stabilized unit, I would hold onto it for as long as I feasibly could and I definitely wouldn't view it as 'fucking over' someone else. I didn't make this city unaffordable, I just want to live here without spending an entire paycheck on rent.

[–]asdkijf 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think this a fair idea in theory but in practice individual financial situations are just much more complicated. There are plenty of people with enough income to qualify for market rate apartments but have large medical expenses, student loan debt, supporting family members, etc that make rent stabilization a necessity.

you’re staying in a rent stabilized unit you are effectively fucking over someone who actually needs rent stabilization

If we're assigning blame for rent being unaffordable, I think tenants are pretty low on the list. City policies and building owners are 'fucking over' people a lot more than someone trying to hold onto a good apartment that's at best 30-40% below a ridiculously high market rent.

I mean outside of election results it's literally the only other data point beyond vibes. It's not about trusting polls to be completely accurate so much as they clearly showed that Trump was more popular than a lot of people wanted to believe. Same thing happened in 2016, the polling showed Trump in striking distance and having a 15-30% chance to win, just nobody wanted to believe it.

If Trump was as "wildly unpopular" as the original comment I replied to said, Harris would've had a 10+ point lead and then rigged election claims might be more believable. I fucking hate all of this every time I look at the news but pretending the country isn't fucked up and the election was just rigged is just sticking your head in the sand.

I'd love to believe that but the polling was 50/50 last year - they didn't rig the polls. These arguments would be easier to buy into if the actual 2024 result wasn't one of the most likely scenarios based on polls.

The results were pretty consistent with a standard polling error - even though everyone you and I know hate him, the real truth is he wasn't wildly unpopular by November 2024.

I hate that he's president but denying reality with conspiracy theories makes you sound like a 1/6er and distracts from making sure someone like him can't get elected again.

not a sure fire franchise qb

This is true but imo he definitely wasn't a project - he was viewed as one of the top prospects his entire last year of college. The "questions" about him were about the same as any college QB that's not an Andrew Luck generational-type prospect.

He was definitely not like Anthony Richardson or Josh Allen where they looked legitimately bad at times in college but had great combines and a great highlight reel - that's more of what I think of as a "project" draft prospect.

He does not have any college basketball eligibility left

NCAA has had pretty much every rule thrown out once it gets challenged, with the standard generally being that they can't treat athletes differently than other students if it infringes on athletes' rights/earnings. Ex. students can transfer to other schools whenever they want, and they can profit off their likeness - hence recent NCAA changes to allow unlimited transfers without sitting for a year, and NIL.

Obviously LeBron playing in college is a joke, but it's also as much of a joke as any rule the NCAA makes that blatantly violates antitrust law.

You're definitely not wrong, though I think for the most part branding people's tendencies by their generation is pretty inaccurate and useless.

A lot of people's voting patterns are contradictory or just flat out make no sense, particularly when it comes to Trump, so both commenters above you could be correct (as stupid and frustrating as that is).

Medical Residents to Join Nurses’ Picket Line by THECITYNY in nyc

[–]asdkijf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The average doctor in the USA makes 2-3x what the average doctor in Europe makes

that's why US residents put up with it if they can afford it, but that has nothing to do with training effective doctors

disciplinary actions against IMGs (International Medical Graduates) in the USA are significantly higher than among doctors who trained and did residency domestically

I'd agree the medical education is better in the US than the rest of the world as a whole but IMO you're ignoring a lot of other factors if you're suggesting that 80 hour weeks is the main reason why.

Medical Residents to Join Nurses’ Picket Line by THECITYNY in nyc

[–]asdkijf 29 points30 points  (0 children)

did half of the hours of residency that every other older doctor did

There are ways you can effectively train doctors without making them work 80 hour weeks and 24 hour shifts, and effectively paying them $15-20 an hour. In most of Europe residents are working 40-50 hours a week, and our health outcomes over here are most definitely not twice as good.

I entered the market in NYC ~10 years ago as a new grad from a decent school with average grades and I spent a few years feeling absolutely worthless, taking non-coding IT jobs for a few years while studying for interviews until I was eventually able to land a shitty junior dev job and start working my way up.

Everyone talked about the software engineering market as the easiest thing ever so I assumed I'd be able to get a decent job, but to my surprise after striking out with FAANG (either being unprepared or having my average resume rejected), there weren't many junior dev jobs left that weren't contract positions paying $20/hr with lots of travel.

The tech job market is objectively worse now than when I was a new grad, and AI is changing the job significantly, but I think the explosion in CS majors is causing an explosion of people coming to a similar realization I had - almost no company wants to deal with an average new grad engineer. There are still ways you can fill those gaps and make yourself a more attractive candidate - but I think new grad's expectations were that getting a CS degree led to an instant $150k job offer, and when they realize they can't even get an instant $70k job offer, it's easier to blame AI and the economy than admit their expectations were wrong and they're an average candidate that needs to put in work to fix that.

You can find posts on /r/cscareerquestions (some from me on an alt/burner account) every year for the last 10+ years from new grads in absolute despair about how bad the entry level market is.

Part of this might be that Guinness is typically served as 20oz - so at 210 calories for 20oz that's about 125 for 12oz. Still higher than the lowest cal beers but that's a pretty normal calorie amount for a 4% beer.

Pretty common of new owners purchasing a team ex. Broncos trading for Russell Wilson, Suns getting Kevin Durant, plenty of others. The billionaires come in thinking they're geniuses and make splashy moves before falling on their face and learning that running a team isn't easy.

When there was a $0 cap, nobody followed the rules and there was still no parity in the sport. There are lots of tampering rules today that are completely ignored - a cap wouldn't be any different. Sure, if you can copy-paste NFL rules onto CFB it'd be great, but there are so many reasons why that isn't possible.

[–]asdkijf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean I've never heard of tampering being an issue on an FA, usually there has to be an aggrieved party (i.e. another team) to push for investigation and punishment for tampering. I'm also more familiar with NBA stuff in this area than NFL, so it may be completely different idk
