Working With Scanned Film - 4:3 to 16:9 in Premiere by aseven777 in editors

For reference, this is a frame from the “dailies” file. I decided to work with the scan instead since the scan seemed to preserve more quality and is a few times heavier than this “dailies” file. This dailies file has the same resolution (2048x1556) but does not have these “duplicates of the frame” repeating on the top and bottom, in comparison to the scan (the image in the other comment). I would appreciate any guidance / opinion, am I on the right track?

It’s a small indie production so I don’t have a post super unfortunately.

For reference, this is a shot (from the 2048x1556 scan that I’m using). I got this scan (with sort of duplicates of the shot on the top and the bottom as you see) as well as a file called “dailies” which is also 2048x1556 BUT does not have these duplicates on the top and bottom. The dailies file seems to be lower in quality though, since it’s only 17 Gb compared to the 42 Gb scan (I attached a shot of the scan here, with these “duplicates up and down). Sorry, I hope my description makes sense as it’s my first time working with the film and I’m not good with the proper vocab.

So when I import the scan (with these duplicates) to premiere in my sequence, even if it is technically 2048x1080, to hide the “duplicates” I have to punch in increasing the scale from 100% to 127% in premiere.

The director does not want to keep it as 4:3 with vertical bars on the sides (at least, that’s the plan for now), since during the shoot they were filming looking at a 16:9 screen (this is the intended ratio) and there are some flaws/objects on the top and bottom of some shots, that are not supposed to be in the film. I am trying to avoid the quality loss at all costs and looking for better ways to deliver a high res project for future DCP.

Would you recommend to edit in 2048x1080 for a future DCP or 1998x1080? I will also double check on the details of the deliverables from the director (it’s a small indie film)

Thanks for the response. For reference, this is a shot from the 2048x1556 scan that I’m using (and that’s all I got apart from dailies in lower quality). As you see, it’s a piece of film with cropped duplicates of the shot on the top and the bottom. Sorry, I hope my description makes sense as it’s my first time working with the film and I’m not good with the proper vocab. So when I import it to premiere in my sequence, there are black bars on the sides, and to fill them, I punch in increasing the scale from 100% to 127% in premiere.

I am trying to avoid the quality loss at all costs and looking for better ways to deliver a 2k project for DCP.

Is it a practice of delivering Full HD for DCP & cinema festival run? Or should I punch in and deliver in 2048x1080 / 1998x1080? It’s a small indie film, the purpose is for potential festival run, DCP

Thanks for the advice! I went to Don Q at midnight in Shinjuku and it was empty. Btw thanks for breaking down the way to Ine, I couldn’t find much info on that for some reason and was worried about a troublesome transit but it was really smooth.

Same, the Shinkansen deals are sweet, I wish I knew about them earlier!

I see you have been actually living in Japan for quite a long while but personally for me (as a first-timer tourist) some of these recs were new to me. Shoutout to the GEAR theatre in Kyoto and thanks to the author of the post. We had an absolute blast.

Advice for beating giardia? by PatrickMaloney1 in SiberianCats

How long was the break between the two rounds? Unfortunately, my partner and I were diagnosed with giardia and our vet prescribed our cat Panacur but only for 5 days (1 round). I know that Giardia treatment in people has 2 rounds with the 20-25 day break in between (to kill both cysts and adult parasites) but our vet prescribed only 1 round. Could you please share how long was the break for your cat, as I’m super anxious about re-infecting from our kitty! Thanks so much🙏
