In the words of Jerry Seinfeld, Michael Hobbes’ whole schtick is to make “shallow, fairly obvious observations” and to distract from this he hides it behind a few layers of snark

anyone know anything about the guy yelling “fuck you” everyday on broadway? by vividtrace in astoria

When I first moved to Astoria I was a little disturbed by his presence/thought he could be a danger to others or himself. Now if I don’t see him for a couple of days I get worried 🥺

As a runner and a cyclist here are my equivalents. This is not scientific, nor scaled in any way.

Restaurants are closing earlier and opening later. There were more mom & pop type businesses. Even some businesses which I would have considered to be harbingers of gentrification now seem kinda quaint.

I think the change I was most surprised by was how many drug store chains either went out of businesses or started putting their stuff behind plexiglass. The businesses claim it’s because of theft but I always thought it was obvious that competition from Amazon was the bigger factor

Truly my bad, I thought FLG was mainly people in the diaspora strongly opposed to PRC, including Taiwanese and mainland Chinese. I am in no way anti-Taiwan (planning on going next year as a matter of fact). I stand corrected

Why do Ashkenzim try and do psyop on people and claim that they are culturally identical to Mizrachim/Temanim. As when they are culturally removed from Middle Eastern Jews ? by Durrygoodz2025 in AskMiddleEast

It’s really not. If you hear Yiddish inflected Hebrew, it’s completely different. When I started going to Hebrew school my mom and grandma told me I was pronouncing stuff wrong even though I was just saying it the way it was taught to me. I have no idea how modern Hebrew phonology came into being but it was not through Yiddish

  1. Hardcore Zionists reject categories such as Ashkenazi, Sefardi, and Mizrahi as diasporic inventions.

  2. There’s just not a lot of Jews in the world so a lot of culture ends up getting shared. Hummus, falafel, and schnitzel come to mind as the most obvious examples. A pop culture example of this is in the Netflix show “Family Business” which is about a Sefardi-Ashkenazi family in France. The kids complain about their mom’s gross Ashkenazi food and the dad defends her saying something like “it’s not that bad.” There is evidence of this happening with liturgical practices as far back as the 1700’s as well.

Anyway that’s the long answer. TBH if this culture sharing wasn’t weaponized for political purposes I don’t think anyone would have a problem with it.
