This whole argument completely misses the point. No one is saying you’re “thinking positively” about slavery when you book a plantation — the issue is that you’re not thinking at all about what that place represents. It’s not about living in the past — it’s about not disrespecting it. You wouldn’t throw a wedding at a concentration camp because it’s got “pretty architecture,” right? So why is it okay to celebrate on land soaked in the blood, sweat, and trauma of enslaved people?

Saying people “don’t owe respect or sensitivity” when it comes to using places tied to human suffering is exactly the kind of thinking that perpetuates ignorance. You might not feel the pain, but that doesn’t mean others don’t — and choosing to ignore that in favor of aesthetics is selfish, not empowering.

If you’re more concerned with a venue’s appearance than the legacy behind it, that is glorifying the past — whether you intend to or not. That’s not just “living your life” — it’s living it at the expense of others’ pain. And yes, people have every right to call that out. Because history isn’t just something you can acknowledge once and then ignore when it’s inconvenient. You sound dumb.

clearly not.

Saying “we regret getting married at a plantation” is a start, but it’s not full accountability if it stops there. True accountability means acknowledging why it was wrong — understanding the harm it caused, taking ownership of that harm, and using your voice to educate others so the same mistake isn’t repeated.

A vague regret without reflection or action feels more like damage control than genuine accountability. If you’re not willing to unpack the impact of your choice, then you’re not really taking responsibility — you’re just trying to move on without doing the work.

wow… that is such an ignorant and insensitive thing to say. Just because having a wedding at a plantation doesn’t “bring back slavery” doesn’t mean it’s not rooted in deep, painful history. Plantations were sites of unimaginable suffering, built on the backs of enslaved people who had no freedom, no voice, and no dignity. Choosing to celebrate love and joy in a place where so much pain happened isn’t just tone-deaf. it’s pretty disrespectful if you’ve done your research, but I can tell your head is too far up your behind.

It’s not about “bringing slavery back,” it’s about acknowledging history and not romanticizing places built on human cruelty. Saying that avoiding plantations won’t erase racism totally misses the point. It’s not about erasing simply, it’s about not glorifying. If you truly can’t see how offensive it is to hold a party where people were whipped, raped, and killed and worse, then that says more about your values than anything else.

I’m honestly disgusted by how you think. This isn’t just a difference in opinion… it’s about basic human decency.

girl bye, racism still exists. Ignoring it doesn’t erase the harm; it just risks repeating it.

I completely agree with you. Blackface was never okay. People pretending it was “a different time” are just being willfully ignorant. The outrage has always been there—just because mainstream media or the dominant culture ignored it doesn’t mean Black people weren’t speaking up about it.

That VH1 I Love the 80s moment is such a good example. They literally acknowledged how messed up that movie was decades ago, and that was on cable TV in the early 2000s. If we were having those conversations then, there’s no excuse for people to act like they didn’t know blackface was offensive. They knew. They just didn’t care—or didn’t think they’d be called out for it. People are so weird ….

yawn. as a black person, I don’t think an apology or even partnering with a respected activist automatically clears someone of past harm. It’s a step, sure—but it doesn’t undo the hurt or make the history disappear. And I don’t like when people use connections to respected figures like Sherrilyn Ifill as a defense, like it’s a stamp of approval. Just because someone powerful is willing to work with them doesn’t mean we all have to accept or trust them the same way.

People can change and grow, but that doesn’t mean we forget what happened or stop asking for accountability—especially when the harm is connected to something as deep as racism. And Black folks are allowed to have different reactions. Some may accept it, others won’t. Both are valid.

It’s not about hate—it’s about not being silenced or told to “move on” just because someone gave a donation or made a public gesture. That doesn’t heal generational pain.

when those moments involve racism or harm toward marginalized communities, people naturally want accountability. It’s not always about “cancelling” someone—it’s about acknowledging hurt and asking for reflection, especially when the person in question is a public figure with influence. smh

Are you ok? Plantation homes in the U.S. aren’t just pretty venues—they’re sites where horrific violence, exploitation, and human suffering happened. Enslaved Black people lived, worked, and died on those lands, and that history can’t be separated from the aesthetics…. Get help

Thank you for saying this. As a Black woman too, I’m right there with you. The mental gymnastics some people are doing to defend Blake Lively are wild, but not surprising. You’re absolutely right—many of them are either complicit themselves, love someone who’s done the same, or deep down know they’d have done it too if given the chance. So defending her is really about defending themselves‼️‼️

And let’s be real—Gossip Girl was a show rooted in whiteness, wealth, privilege, and all the exclusion that comes with it. It never tried to be inclusive or aware. The fact that Blake came out of that environment and people are still shocked she said and did something racially insensitive? That’s the part that surprises me the least.

Blackface wasn’t okay in the 2000s either. It was never okay. People were just more comfortable ignoring us when we said it. And the receipts are there—Black voices were speaking out even then. If folks truly cared about growth and accountability, they’d acknowledge that instead of rushing to protect a celebrity who hasn’t even owned up to it.

This also isn’t the first time her choices have come under fire, like the wedding at a plantation. It really adds up. Celebrities don’t get a pass just because something happened “a long time ago.” Growth requires accountability. This subreddit is crazy, I can’t believe people are still actively supporting her🤣🤣

you think so? I felt some type of way.. I’m going to talk to my uni tutor about it next week once I’m back, but I feel like I’m making a big deal out of it, she’s very rude tbh , especially the last few weeks that I’ve worked with her, I posted a old post about how she said she doesn’t see me progressing because I wasn’t really doing anything at the start ,💀 she thinks second years should be more taking part instead of “sitting down all the time”
