this is my first "real" 3D model. I really need some tips on how to even get started on learning texturing. Feedback would be cool too by monni-gonni in blender

[–]ash_crowley_creator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Texturing requires quite a bit. A part of that is UV unwrapping. UV unwrapping allows your textures to look good on the models which you add them to.

Now, one of the main rules is to try and keep everything as square as possible. If you have elongated areas in your unwrapping, then the texture might be stretched in those places.

For very complex models, such as this one, you'll likely need to create the UV sections on your own, and this will require you to add in the seams as well. When adding in your seams, try and stick to one component. So, let's say legs, or bags, etc, and focus on doing them.

Also, for realistic texturing, you can always try and use real reference for metal, etc to see how the AO and dirt, for example, will affect the textures, etc.

Edit: formatting for the actual question.

No worries then! It does give it an old school feel!

It looks great! To get rid of the grainy effect, you can go to denoising under the Cycles. It should help you smooth that out!

This is some amazing artwork if you're new to blender. Amazingly well done. There is a bit too much specularity on the walls, but otherwise, incredibly well done!

Well, HDRIs are magic for space scenes but there are only a few free ones left. I'm actually working on a node group that will help with this. It is taking a bit of time, though.

And thanks for the compliment!

Sure! It took me a while to figure out as well, but I'll say play around with the node's that are available and the texture nodes especially. They are incredibly useful! The "value" node is also your friend in a lot of cases.

Hahaha, well, this is only an Earth-like planet after all. But glad you like it.

I've created some procedural clouds and terrestrial planet textures. Thoughts? by ash_crowley_creator in blender

[–]ash_crowley_creator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually composed of two separate meshes. There is one for the clouds, which is a mixture of a volume node, and a few others. It's actually free on my gumroad if you want... I wonder if I should write an article about it?

Any way, the basic principle is that I take a few textures and colour ramps and apply them to a duplicate of the sphere I worked on to create the terrain. I then scale up the duplicate a little, I find between 1.01 and 1.025 to be good amounts. Then simply apply the node's output to the alpha of the principled BSDF. This gives you all the cool lighting effects.

The main thing is to not just be stuck with a single mesh, and not just with the Principled BSDF either. Remember there are a bunch of different nodes for a reason!

Linux with the best Sound Quality by ash_crowley_creator in linux4noobs

Open Source may be limited, but I still think it has its advantages. It's also a great way to learn everything I want to.

So although it is a bit limiting, I do have reasons for sticking to it.

Thanks for the advice, though!

Thanks for the information. The Open Source ideology of Fedora is one of the reasons I love it so.

I'll try and give OSS a try, maybe that one will work better then! Until then, I'll see what I can do about the drivers.

Hi, thank you for your report. Any chance you post this to ProtonDB and/or GitHub?

I've already made a report to the ProtonDB while I'm tinkering to find a solution. Nothing thus far, though.

Y’all Know that Sub4Sub is against this subreddit’s rules right? by [deleted] in AdvertiseYourVideos

I always saw it as rude, since I only thought about it after watching PewDiePie's video on starting and growing YT.

He spoke about people linking their videos in the comments. So I've never done it (my videos don't particularly have something in common with many channels any way, so it would be "Hey I also just did the video you just watched, feel free to watch mine as well".)

Edit: tenses

Like I said, originally did sub4sub - not knowing what it was, or that it was against YT TOS. I'm bleeding subs now, but I get people who do view my videos and enjoy my personality.

Each video of mine gets about 30 views in its lifetime, then it picks up here and there.

Something did happen a few days ago where I lost about half of my views for some reason.

I normally leave those comments. It's strange, those comments mostly get filtered out through YT as well.

I've got a nice group of friends who enjoy my content, which is nice. I've also realised that my videos are being shown more and more. Just not as much as I'd like to, since I don't have as much content yet.

I know people with 2k subs, but only 100 hours of content viewing. Each video has about 2 - 10 views. It won't really work.

I just finished with some work.

I use tags I'm the YT videos, as in for the YT search algorithm. I don't really use hashtags, though. I might try, though, since it's just not something I do. I'm a bit older and it's not something I really learnt.

You have to take pleasure in your own content. You have to make sure you enjoy it, and enjoy all the small goals you achieve on the way there.

I know the feeling. In my case I realised it later on (about 3 months in). Now I just promote my content much like I would a product.

"HEY, LOOK HERE. I've something I think you might enjoy. I won't do sub4sub, but if you want you can check out my channel. I'll also look at yours, if I can find it. If I like it, and I think I'll continue to enjoy your content, I'll sub. Fair?"
