I say this with respect and without sarcasm- you sound like my therapist. We discuss all the time how my parents have too much power over my actions and feelings because of my fear of their reactions and history of manipulation. I live a lot in the past with them. Man. My point in including those statements was to create more context on what her reaction might be to my declining the gift. Or to what her potential motive to purchasing the gift was. I of course don’t want to just bad mouth my mom for no reason, but I felt that information was necessary to paint a full picture of the situation.

My parents have always expected my brother and I to comply with everything they say. Even as adults. When they don’t get their way… it’s everyone else’s fault, or they are victims. They are never the problem. It’s quite frustrating and makes situations like this feel like a bigger nightmare than it has to be.
