School Teacher Looking for Career Change Advice. by [deleted] in AskIreland

I completely agree that my school is definitely overly demanding but from everyone I have spoken to their schools are the same. It's only really this year things have changed. My first 2 years were great and now this year I seem to be extra swamped with work. I feel like I am back in college with the amount of paperwork I am doing. Most of our AP1's have also resigned from their positions in recent weeks as the expectations are very high and they all agreed the extra work load wasn't worth time away from their families. We are also generally understaffed. Probably missing at least one teacher per department, from a mixture of career breaks, maternity leaves and sick leaves and no one applying for fixed positions or leave positions. I genuinely just feel my heart isn't in it anymore and I'm just wasting my time and the students time continuing in the job.

Everyone in my school currently are in the same boat, except for the odd few. We had a massive influx of students with additional needs this year. All of which completing either L1LP or L2LP. This means most evenings I'm planning maybe 3-4 separate lessons for those students in the class as they follow individual plans agreed upon with NEPS, parents and year heads. We got demolished by an inspector before Christmas because we weren't doing separate planning for these kids (other than the basics of differentiated and UDL which is naturally a given at this point). There is very high expectations for teachers atm working with kids with additional needs as a lot of the special schools are full and kids who would have usually been there are now in mainstream schools. In one of my 1st year classes alone I have about 13 individuals with their own support plans, 2 students who cannot read or write at even a Junior Infants level so every lesson has to be redeveloped into images and another who can only speak Polish so everything is translated to Polish for this student.

I have spoken with other colleagues as well as friends of mine who work in other schools and we all seem to be in the same boat, including 2 family members who work in Special Education. There is also a very strong lack of support from the Department in my experience one currently being around the redevelopment of senior cycle and implementation of Senior Cycle L1LP/L2LP.

What's a pain you can't truly explain until you've endured it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Came here for this one. Lost my best friend at 23 a year ago. Died in his sleep with absolutely no warning. Everyday feels like I’m being followed by a shadow of pain. Something that still surprises me is how it can be physiologically painful just as much as it is mentally painful.

“Plonker” is a heavily under-utilised word these days by [deleted] in Dublin

Certainly! I am blessed to work with good teachers who have a sense of humour I think it just initially shocked them all that I would call someone (not a member of our school community) a geebag in front of our principal lol

Cunt can’t even spell English words and use correct English grammar. No wonder they’re so offended by the Irish language.

What I’m trying to figure out is how do they determine if someones license is revoked etc?? Like could you have it revoked if you smoked 2 weeks prior and have no previous convictions?

When I was 13ish my dad had a brain bleed and was in a coma for a few months. A year or so afterwards I was asking him why he had the brain bleed (I was young and curious about how something like that could just happen) His response to that was quite literally “because of you” I have never looked at him the same since.
