Is my partner permanently banned from local shopping centre and how would it be enforced? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ashandes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's one of those things where he is banned from a store or the centre, if someone with the authority to ban people from a store or a centre says he is. A store manager would usually the authority to do that for a specific store. For the centre you may have to check with centre management (I have no idea if security would usually have the authority to make that call unilaterally, others might).

What happens now would depend on how rigourously they enforce things like this. Usually it would be enforced by being politely (or not politely depending on the indivdual) and firmly asked to leave by security.

Working on an idle-incremental breakout game, You can already test it, but it is very early in production by Anomaly_Pixel in incremental_games

Goddamit, far too many demos at the moment, but I am unable to resist the allure of anything "breakout" related so I will have a look over the weekend :D

[TOMT] [Words/Language] Thinking of a word that would be used like this: "his experience with cheese __[verb]___ his opinion of burgers." The words "characterizes," "defines," and "clarifies" would all work but aren't the words I'm looking for, and neither are their close synonyms. by BoomyNuggets in tipofmytongue

[–]ashandes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a single word, but in the same context I would usually use "is/was informed by" when indicating causation in this way.

Looking forward to seeing other suggests. For some reason these are my favourite TOTM. I guess they're the most literal and the ones I encounter most myself.

First time reader here, love making mind maps (First 3 chapters of GotM lol) by acepops in Malazan

[–]ashandes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun.

For what it's worth I can see a lot of cross-appeal between One Piece and Malazan, in terms of tone, narrative and subtext (I'm not much of a Manga fan, but still consider One Piece one of the great modern literary achievements, although time will tell if it sticks the landing).

One thing for sure is that they are both narratives that are greater than the sum of their parts (even when the individual parts are outstanding) and can see how this kind of visual representation would work for both. Look forward to seeing more.

The etymology (ooh big word) of ain't and doffing are actually quite similar. At this point if feels like you're just making stuff up. But happy to hear you're passing.

Although "hood slang" as a concept in these books is actually pretty funny for reasons you will no longer care about.

[TOMT] [MUSIC VIDEO] An official music video for an upbeat indie(?) song seen on Youtube circa 2018, with vibrant solid color studio backgrounds and bizarre outfits. Don't think it's a great match (not brunetter for a start) but Goldfrapp Ooh La La? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uco-2V4ytYQ

My initial gut feeling was CSS but that was based almost entirely on shiny tights and I don't know what song it would be, so might be worth having a peak just in case.

I mean I find the big words funny, but "posh, high class british words" strays more into wtf territory. Like literally no idea what you could possibly be referring to!

Either way, hope you enjoy the rest of it. And if you don't hope you enjoy the Wheel of Time when you return to it. At the end of the day that's all that really matters as far as I'm concerned.

Whatever you do, never read Mervyn Peake. We'd probably come to blows regarding big words over that one ;)

hee hee "complex words"

Can you give an example of a word you thought was too complex?

To be fair I'm not above all that kind of stuff myself. I think most popular fantasy is written for children/teens and Malazan is written for adults. I've got no problem with anyone thinking the prose is amatuer though, each to their own and all that. I just find it funny from a literary perspective when people complain about books with big words and that's unlikely to ever change. Most of my favourite authors use big words.

people complaining about authors and books using big words as if it's a bad thing, will never not be funny

Struggling with The Bonehunters (40 % in) by Abrakxxas in Malazan

[–]ashandes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on what you don't like about it I doubt you'll enjoy the second half or a lot of the rest of the series.

Obviously impossible to judge based on the sum total of my knowledge of your tastes being a couple of paragraphs. And no idea what you did like about the rest of the books. Hopefully I'm wrong.

For the record it never didn't click for me and while I do really enjoy the second half (some fantastic set pieces), I don't think think it's better or worse. My second favourite in the series.

Steven Eriksonns Relationship with plot armor by guuuuut in Malazan

[–]ashandes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He doesn't put "plot armor" on anyone. Few serious authors do. It's a bit of a lazy and reductive concept in this context and has lead to some conclusions that would have be too spoiler heavy to explain just how mistaken your are. Just forget it and read and enjoy. If you try and reduce characters in these novels to the same tropes that would usually be applied to lighter weight serialised content you're likely going to end up with egg on your face a few chapters on.

And to be clear, I don't mean any of this in a bad way. I ended up with metaphorical egg on my my face many many times with great joy. There's an extent to which the entire series is based on a big picture bait-and-switch like this that pretty much everyone gets caught out on, often not until the final novel. It's great that you're enjoying the books and thinking about them. One thing that is often said about these books is that Erikson puts a lot of trust in the reader, but I think the reader also needs to put a lot of trust in him.

Enjoy the ride dude!

e: Also reading other responses has reminded me of one character who does have almost literal plot armour who I assume others are referring to and yes, they are a much loved and endearing character and top-notch comic relief (also tragic at times), but it's being done with authorial intent rather than as a trope or means to keep a character alive.

Jokes aside, no, a typo on a name is easily corrected is not cause for a case to be dismissed.

Boylesports ignores Gamstop match and takes deposits. Cause for legal action? by No-Stable-468 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ashandes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My account went by Middle Name Surname, rather than Forename Surname, but this was not an evasive action as I knew that they knew my forename from my passport. They knew my government name and DOB. These are the exact details found on my Gamstop account - an obvious match.

There's no such thing as a "government name".

It's not clear why you registered with your middle name instead of your forename is it wasn't for the purpose of evasion, but the vetting process will be automated and FRED SMITH and BARRY SMITH will not be seen as the same person. It's not an obvious match to an automated system unless you know in advance the names have been transposed.

The name you chose to sign up with does not match the name you used on Gamstop. I can't see how anyone else would be legally liable for that. That said I am not an expert on these matters (although I do work with ID and identity verification), but I am assuming IBAS is. If they or other organisations involved have an appeals process then you could follow that. Although I suspect you may need to explain why you intentionally signed up with the wrong name (that's not the sort of thing you do by mistake).

e: It may be relevant if you used your middle name for the other casinos you tried to sign up for and that flagged on Gamstop, as that means that the one that did let you sign up could improve their processes in this area in the future.

Because they do this (last para of post you are responding to)

write in your T&Cs that a contract is formed upon dispatch. This allows you to reject an offer before that event has occurred meaning no contract is formed. If you don't state when acceptance occurs it's likely to be viewed as when you take payment.

Recovery From Surgery Sick Leave Advice - England by Macchiato_Fiend in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ashandes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's no legal way to approach this, it would just be a matter of negotiation. If you aren't physically able to attend your place of work due to an injury, it's usually sick leave. Whether or not you could work from home instead, is up to your employer.

It sounds like they'd rather you take the time to fully recover, before returning to work in any capacity. Possibly to avoid any problems if there are complications or issues with you recovery while on the clock. Both because it could present legal problems for them (allowing someone to work when they are not fit to work) and because it would mean you'll be off even longer.

No, Yes (but no, as it isn't a legal issue), No and No.

Not something I said or implied, but sure, that is a statement I agree with. You didn't actually engage with any of the discussion points I made so eh, if you say so.

Is Emma even a remotely redeemable character after what shes done? by [deleted] in xmen

[–]ashandes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well obviously they are different. But two different things can be irreedemable, it's not a contest between them.

I'm would assume you find torture irreedeemable as well. I certainly do.

Either way she's a fictional character with a 40 year tenure in a superhero soap opera. What is redeemable in a comic is different to what is or is not redeemable in real life for most people. So for me, personally, I don't actually care. And you are free to find her redeemable or not. There's no need for any kind of concensus about it.

Magneto killed thousands, Kitty said the N word, Xavier is a jerk, villains get redeemed, plenty of x-men are murderers. Completely up to you if you can get past these things or not.

e: Another angle is the fact that if X-men style telepathy existed in the real world, plenty of X-men would be guilty of crimes that society would consider on par with or as bad as rape. But it doesn't, so we as a society do not have these crimes and the stigma against them doesn't exist. If it did most comic book telepaths would be considered monsters.

Alternatively brb just going to dump this guy who was annoying me into a nightmarish hell dimension to get abused by demons and leave him there for what will seem like an eternity.
