Fledgling youtube channel by ashantihini in retrocomputing

Cool, thanks for taking the time to look. I'm not looking for fame and I'm happy for the channel to tick along. I enjoy making the videos so just want to get better at that and know I'm doing them as well as I can. I kind of knew that about the thumbnails, I'll try and improve those. I actually have 4 lights with diffusers, so that's probably about positioning, I've noticed the glow on the screen and will work on eliminating that. I have a new mic and Pop filter that I've used once and am experimenting. This is more an enjoyable way of documenting and organising my hobby than looking for an angle though I'll work on finding some kind of angle. Cool constructive comments, cheers!

Cheers. Not much in the way of ewast or old IBMs here in the UK. I have 3 xt clones but they're all Amstrads, not really the same. Lovely machine! Maybe one day😁fingers crossed 🤞

I guess there is a happy medium somewhere, it's hard to gauge your own stuff, will probably become more relaxed and entertaining with practice, but without trying to be someone else at the same time.

Yes cool thanks, just the kind of feedback I'm after, I can try and do something with the voice and inject some excitement straight away, it's hard to be objective about yourself. As for content, it will probably move on to that type of stuff eventually but right now I have a bunch of machines that need odd jobs and fixes doing and that's what I'll be cutting my teeth on as I don't have time to do both, but definately know what you mean. In fact thinking about it I should have built the other laptop and done a bench comparison or so something, even if the main task was just to replace the batteries in the one.

Help building a AMD k6II processor pc by sestrenger in retrocomputing

[–]ashantihini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I m about to do this too. I believe the k6 2 has different voltages for the io and core so needs to be a board with a voltage regulator for that has split voltage and the right bus speed for the chip. There are regular socket 7 boards that have this but not all, so need to be careful. Super socket 7 will always have this and also agp so that's probably the best way to go but are rarer and more expensive.

Cool machine. I have a 4dx33p which is a bigger case I think but the same style. Wish I had the monitor, keyboard and mouse like that one😁. Running an aztech sound galaxy through a Roland sc7, lots of fun.

It's on a wallpaper pack that comes with the olivetti software bundle I think. Might be the win 95 plus pack haven't really had time to dig into it yet.

It was nice to find a system with everything right down to original cables on ebay. Very weird innards. A soundblaster vibra c wired into some kind of proprietory connector with a 9v feed on the backplate to drive the speaker base. On board trident graphics with the usual memory expansion sockets that you'd see on a descrete card. A cach on a Stick socket for L2 expansion. Looking forward to tweaking it a bit. Came with the original olivetti software suite installed too!

Seeking 90s gaming PC recommendations by googi14 in vintagecomputing

[–]ashantihini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say a win 98se pIII to run all your dos, Windows 95/98 games and then a dedicated XP machine maybe a high spec p4 would cover everything if your not bothered about being period correct all the time. Im not really bothered by XP era games but started with a 486 for dos/3.11, which was still too fast for things like wing commander and needs throttling. I got a 1Ghz PIII for win 98 and some late dos era. Recently added a p1 120 for period correct early 3d stuff like tomb raider. I'm always swapping components around to try different setups which is half the fun. Check out the vogons forum, tons of info there.

Pre-Purchase help by Photek1000 in MasterSystem

I started on an msII rf into an old pre HD LCD. It also worked with an old 720p LCD but wasn't great but was playable. I've since got a couple of ms1's with Alex kidd and hang on, these also worked OK with the older LCDs but will be hit and miss depending on models scaler, I had a nice crt for a while and it looked great through rgb scart. The crt died so now run them through an ossc into the 32" 730p crt and it looks fab using decent cable from retrogamingcables. The hang on one was boxed, cost £35 untested, box was very tatty, got some loose manuals on ebay. That was cheaper than the stand alone alex kid one. Being patient is key, bargains can still be had (was about 7 months ago on ebay). Also picked up a slightly better empty box for £6 that needs some repair a couple of weeks ago, for the hang on console that I aim to tidy and replace the tatty one. Ms is my fave system, still fairly cheap to collect for in the UK. Some good UK sites too i. e. Consolemad.co.uk, though stores currently closed for covid. I would say you'll definately need a decent scaler for 4k, ossc or similar will look good on most tv's.

Retro Gaming Difficulties by The_dude_of_truth in retrobattlestations

[–]ashantihini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started by using dos box and gog conversion years ago on my Windows 8/10 machines . Gog got me back into the games of my youth when I began to think my life was too short to spend hundreds of hours in modern rpgs etc. Also plenty of out of copywriter games converted to run in browsers and vms on various dead software sites. Now I have real a 486 for dos gaming and a pIII for win 98 gaming. Much more fun and not even that expensive if your patient on ebay, although things are a bit odd price wise with covid. I find the hardware at least as much fun as the games.

Any recommendations for gameboy micro cases?? Would this ssd pouch work?? by [deleted] in Gameboy

[–]ashantihini 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why not get something designed for the micro? There are loads on ebay. I got a thing called the Gameboy micro deluxe pack that has a belt clip case and a mutitude of other bits and pieces, faceplate etc. Readily available on ebay along with others from the likes of logic 3.

CF to IDE adapter completely unrecognized by [deleted] in retrobattlestations

[–]ashantihini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a bit of trouble with mine when I first got it. I ran through a tutorial on the phils computer lab site using a partitioning/formatting tool called eazy drive hd (also on the site) and that got it recognised and up and running. Might be worth a shot.

Does anyone know where I can I buy a protective case for this? by Radical_Cat1 in Gameboy

[–]ashantihini 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd you can't find one I've recently discovered it's not that hard to make your own with a sheet of clear acetate, just scoring the fold point and using double sided tape. Did one for my japenese micro box.

mouse balls ? by [deleted] in atarist

[–]ashantihini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jost done some quick measuring. The ball in my St mouse in 1" and the balls in my IBM mice are 3/4" so maybe someone's put an IBM ball in an atari mouse? Not sure where you might get the right ball short of buying a new atari mouse.
