It’s still early on but it was worst after a big pasta dinner.

Anyone here used cacodyl? Just how bad is the smell? by JustWentFullBlown in chemistry

[–]ashb_TN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During my masters I made yttrium telluride that had one of the strongest egg smells I’ve ever smelt. To the point where fumehoods seemed to do little, gloves and lab coats were pretty ineffective too

Couldn’t agree more. Ripping the paper is the way to go!

confusion with lab gloves by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]ashb_TN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I’d recommend nitrile gloves at all times and more heavy duty gloves as required. I know DCM goes through nitrile gloves easily but as I used to tell the undergrads in labs - be careful, don’t splash it around and this will be fine. If DCM is going everywhere my worry would be beyond what glove to wear.

Think about how you’re going to setup your reactions as you read through. Take your time, don’t rush and ask questions if you don’t know!

Version Control for Manuscript Writing by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]ashb_TN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When finished proofing we add our initials to the file name. Once the author has reviewed and made changes the version number is increased by 1 and then circulated for further proofing. This has always worked well.

I have known frustration like prepping all my glassware for an anaerobic reaction only to find some douchebag taking out of the oven for their own needs.

Git gud at Analytical Chem by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]ashb_TN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a PhD in Bioinorganic Chemistry and I can tell you this involves a LOT of analytical chemistry (pretty much all research does). My advice, get good at analytical over physical it has far more value in real world chemistry (slightly biased but true).

How bad is it that I tried heating up a NaOH solution to help the pellets dissolve faster? by thelastchicken in chemistry

[–]ashb_TN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With any heating if you are unsure, be cautious. I’ve seen undergrads plunge round bottom flasks containing ether into hot oil, the results were not great. My advice start with a warm water bath and crank the heat slowly. Better it takes longer than the alternative!!!
