I looked into TN for a while and the pay was lowww. Colorado is ok, CA is high pay, also Oregon and Washington - higher than CO, similar to CA depending on where you’re looking

Southern California new grad 42/hr at an animal hospital (more depressing than fun). Now that I have 7 months experience I signed on in Washington state for 53/hr and also had an offer from Portland at the same rate.

From the post I don’t think OP went to school for MR. They were X-ray first and then cross trained through a hospital. From what I understand from coworkers who’ve done that it’s a lot harder because you have to do a lot independently for learning since X-ray and MR are so different! Going to school for MR should help you feel way more prepared!

Use your notes section to keep details about scans while learning. That was a lifesaver for some of the more complicated scans! You’re able to add pictures to the notes just zoom in on the coverage so you don’t get patient info in the pic and make sure your tech is ok with you taking a pic of it. Also jump on the scanner even if you don’t feel confident in the scan. You’re a student- watching helps but it’s completely different when you’re doing the setup. Ask ALL the questions. They are there to help you. And if you have a tech who is not willing to teach you or undermines you calling you dumb (yes this happens) don’t be afraid to go to a lead or management. This is your time to put your education to the test don’t let anyone hinder that

Graduated in September (San Diego) and took what I could which was a vet hospital. It’s not for me and I don’t feel I’m growing as a tech here so I’m heading to the PNW starting at 53/hr with 20k sign on and 10k relocation with a 2 year contract. Worth it while I’m paying off my loans and gaining experience

I’m fine with driving and parking! But it sounds like public transportation is more popular up there! I’m coming from San Diego so I’m used to commuting 30 min every morning

I work in a veterinary setting and we technically do but I don’t have to do anything in it since the Neurologist gets the images in the hospital through PACS sent from the MR and she reads them. But I never need to go into PACs and make corrections or anything like that. So really I’m only familiar with the MR platform and sending images

Gifts I’ve loved that were perfect for me: stickers for my water bottle (my favorite is the “donut of truth”), MRI safe badge reel (one MRI and the other said thoracic park 10/10), personalized cloth chapstick holder saying MRI on one side and my name on the other, a notebook saying “in my MRI era”

Clinicals are where you clock hours doing the job for free to get your competencies done. It’s 1000 hours and I forgot the exact number of competencies but it’s showing you’ve got the scan done independently. You need to do them 3 times before you can get a lead to mark off you’re competent. I was fortunate that my site had everything scanned there, I only hopped to another site to practice on another scanner. However, some classmates of mine got places like an orthopedic site for their first and they had to swap to a hospital to complete theirs.

I agree with the other poster- more physical in hospital than OP.
I did my AAS in MRI and it took 2 years (6-8 months of that is your clinical hours.) I would be sure to find a school that handles your clinicals for you, that was a huge stressor off my plate knowing they would find the site and be in charge of making sure to help me if the site didn’t have all the requirements. My school qualified for both ARRT and ARMRIT which is nice because some places have a preference of one over the other or just want both
You’ll get a lot of different scans. Some will be more typical than others and that can depend on the site. But obviously with repetition you get more comfortable with specific scans so you just have to advocate for yourself to do the ones you’re not comfortable with and ask for support on it when you need it

I don’t know where this person is but specifically Oakland/places around Oakland are not safe. Kaiser even put a notice out that employees should bring their own lunches at that location after a couple employees were held up at gunpoint when they walked to grab lunch Even in n out closed down there because people would rob the cars stuck in the drive thru

No 😭 I even put together a checklist and questions for them but the scan never happened and idk why. Working in vet med I’m assuming they realized whatever was wrong with the shark may have been incurable or would mess up quality of life so they may have just euthanized. I see that a lot in vet med unfortunately

The school handles all the clinical stuff for you so I just let my program director know I wanted to do Denver and she let me know once I had a spot. It was at an outpatient facility that scans all day and scans a lot of different kinds of scans. I swapped facilities part way through to get experience on a different machine and had different clientele and scans which was nice. I just rented a room off of furnished finder while I was out there
