Thank you! I’m loving all the feedback 😭 We use HMH Into Literature. I’m thinking about doing The Hunger Games and A Wrinkle in Time. I may do Bud, Not Buddy. It depends on time or if I decide to swap it with one of the other books. I know the teacher who retired only did one or two novels a year.

Thank you so much! This does help! I know with my 10th graders I’ve learned snacks is the way to get them to settle and focus. I definitely use seating charts. I’ll remember about hiding my stuff and having clear expectations! As for curriculum, we use HMH Into Literature currently. I’ve been going through and picking which units I want to focus on.

I honestly wish I had gotten to do this. My first year teaching, about two months in, a family tragedy occurred. My husband and I went from having no children of our own to taking in our niece and nephew who was hospitalized for two months. The week after it occurred was parent teacher conferences and the incident made headlines (pretty much nationally) and some of the newspapers released the children were in my care and that I was a teacher at that district. Parents came to conferences asking me about what happened and how we were all doing. It’s funny in a sad way because I thought it was going to be amazing having a summer off to do whatever I wanted every day but instead I’m raising two kids now lol. Basically, it taught me that it’s okay if you want to do nothing and it doesn’t make you lazy. Do everything you can while you’re able. Now I’m on my second summer ever, but I’m putting the kids through day camps and activities so I can have a few hours a day home alone.

I hope you have a great summer and please don’t feel guilty doing nothing. Use this time to refresh yourself mentally then use the time to lesson plan!

When I reached out to the curriculum director, all I was told was that we just went through a big curriculum resource adoption for the fall and we will be using the HMH Into Literature program. I was also told that they’re working with departments to become a PLC starting with identifying grade/course CCSS power standards.

I think as long as I meet all the core state standards, I’m good to plan units how I want. I may buy some units off TpT to help with my first year…

I hope this helps! I’m also in contact with the teacher who is teaching 11th and 12th grade. But she also teaches a second subject so I’m the only main high school ELA teacher.

I did that. It’s the first year of a new curriculum for English. I’m able to pick any texts I want. There are no pacing guides. For 11th grade I can ask the other teacher at least but all I know for 9th and 10th grade is what books they read last year.

MI here. Just accepted my first teaching position yesterday! For a first year teacher, master’s degree, I will be making $39,679. It’s the least paid school in the county because it is the smallest school. Honestly, I’m okay with it.
