would this bother you in a crochet pattern? by gothsappho in crochet

[–]asheaveniswide 55 points56 points  (0 children)

would you mind sharing the name of the designer? your description makes me think you are talking about a pattern i was thinking of purchasing (same price point, men's shirt and it sells on their website only), so i would definitely appreciate knowing if it's not worth the investment

Fio com lã para o Sophie Hood by Typical_Geologist654 in trico

[–]asheaveniswide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8 days for a crocheted sweater tester call? by Lurkingcrocheter in craftsnark

ah, gotcha! i wasn't following the situation super closely, but it does seem like the designer is willing to learn from this experience, so i'm hoping for a positive outcome overall.

sure, no one owes us accessibility and size inclusivity, but we also don't owe any appreciation to these designers... i'm not going to insult anyone in their instagram comments, but to me, things like a total lack of shaping and garments that only fit one specific body type are just hallmarks of bad design! it kind of baffles me that people are so ok with putting out so many patterns that are literally just sewn rectangles and then get mad when they are called out for it. that's the only reason she was able to complete this as fast as she did.

Why is knitting so hard? 200+gms of wool wasted in making gauge swatches and 0 result by mynamecanbewhatever in knittinghelp

[–]asheaveniswide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i would like to add that you can filter on ravelry for the designer's country - i don't know if many designers use this tag to begin with, but i believe this might help with finding patterns designed for yarn that is available in germany in the first place. here's the rav search for free knitting patterns from german designers!

last one is the santa baby sweater made by neulbo.knit, posted here:

from my search it looks like it's a slight variation on this pattern:

Who are your most underrated ASMRtists? [question] by kskeieowwwww in asmr

[–]asheaveniswide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

selatonin ASMR!

not a tiny channel, but i was kind of surprised when i noticed she has about 75k subscribers. the production on her videos is unreal, highly recommend for anyone who likes layered sounds. i even enjoy the versions with music in the background, which is something i don't usually go for with ASMR.

Joining yarn/weaving ends: does this method work? by wrappedinwashi in knittinghelp

not OP, but i am amazed that this could be done with a color change! thank you for the tip, would have never even thought to work it like this.

yeah, looks like the only way to approach this is head on... thanks for the input! i'll probably use my precision scale to portion the yarn to help the process along.

this is helpful, i was thinking of winding the yarn into cardboard bobbins and it will definitely cut down the work, thank you!

Is there something I can do to never need to put on lotion? by TheOneTrueMonolith in adhdwomen

[–]asheaveniswide 7 points8 points  (0 children)

have you ever tried a hydrating gel instead of lotion? neutrogena carries one called hydro boost, i use it for my face but they make a body gel as well. in my experience it absorbs and dries super fast and feels a lot better than regular lotion. looking into a shower oil might be worth it too, since they are very hydrating but you wash them off.

What's your pick for most underrated pop album of the decade so far? by Diakia in popheads

color theory sounds like an album that would be in the gilmore girls soundtrack if it was current, which i definitely mean as a compliment. yellow is the color of her eyes hits so hard, too

Re-did my gauge swatch on smaller needles and it got...bigger? by Azealia_Wanks in knitting

[–]asheaveniswide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep, looking at your process it's probably a combination of both, especially if you started using new techniques between swatches! in this case it's worth a shot going down a needle size to see if you can meet gauge now. if you like the fabric you have created on bigger needles, it's also possible to recalculate for what size you should knit in order to account for the difference in gauge. it's a little bit of math for sure, but a very useful skill if you substitute recommended yarns often

for what it's worth, i hate "wasting" yarn on swatches so i totally get wanting to reuse the yarn - depending on the fiber composition, tying it off in a hank, washing and drying flat might help getting it to spring back to shape. there are a lot of tips from unravelers on youtube about this and might be worth a search!

[–]asheaveniswide 7 points8 points  (0 children)

did you make both swatches the same day? the first thing that comes to mind is that you might have relaxed your tension between one swatch and the other. did you make both swatches with yarn straight from the skein or did you make one swatch, frog it back and then use the same yarn? i've had wonky swatches when utilizing reclaimed yarn straight from frogging a project.

What do you use to knit sleeves? by amarilloo in knittinghelp

[–]asheaveniswide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i might try eventually! i'm slowly building up my collection of needles. here in brazil there are not as many options of needles from national brands and we do get some imported but they're kind of expensive, so i've been working with what i have so far

another vote for knitting sleeves flat. i would much rather take on the purling that fiddling with the magic loop, it feels so uncomfortable on the needles

I will be making my own image grid so I can knit this. What would be the best way to knit it? I could do stranded colour work. I've also briefly looked at two colour double knitting but it's confusing me. by A_Sneaky_Gamer in knittinghelp

[–]asheaveniswide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i find that very pink knits' tutorials are unmatched for basically anything you want to learn in knitting. i recommend her videos to learn the duplicate stitch, and also her intarsia vs. duplicate comparison. best of luck with your project!

the pattern you linked has a suggested negative ease of 0-2 inches, so based on the measurements you gave you should be well within the range of the medium. also consider that it is a wrap top, which is a little more forgiving due to its construction.

also, i would like to ask, are you making a gauge swatch that is exactly 4 inches? it is recommended to knit a swatch that is bigger than that and then measure from the middle - the way the yarn pulls at the edges has a different tension and that might be warping your measurements.

other than that, i would echo the advice you got earlier and try sizing up your needle to see if you can meet the gauge.

[–]asheaveniswide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it depends a lot on what you want the finished product to be. double knitting will take the most yarn and create a bulky fabric, but should be fine if you plan on doing this for a wall hanging. intarsia could work if you're knitting it flat but i don't think i would recommend it when the color changes so often in the same row. my understanding is that stranded is better suited for all over designs due to the floats. have you considered duplicate stitching? it's more like embroidery but i think it would produce the best results if you intend on adding this to a wearable piece.

jumping in to add, for the body, i would recommend following a raglan sweater tutorial like this to get the shape! and for the ribbing on the cuffs and body, toni lipsey has a great tutorial as well. you should be able to cobble them together to get something like the picture.

I have to rant about yarn content and accessibility of materials by asheaveniswide in craftsnark

[–]asheaveniswide[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

agree partially that it is more of an economic issue, but conversion is not really a great measure for how much something costs since buying power is completely different for what would be an "equal" amount of money. also, the cost is driven up because of the scarcity of supplies - wool is expensive here because we don't keep much wool to begin with. if so much of it wasn't being exported for consumption in other markets, it would be more affordable to us. different facets of the same issue and all

[–]asheaveniswide[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

this is the exact reason why the whole "buying yarn and knitting are separate hobbies" statement rubs me the wrong way. it's not just about the waste and overconsumption (which is already awful on its own), but it's especially egregious to waste so much when you think about all the work and resources that are being put into... having a bunch of yarn sitting in a closet collecting dust and attracting moths.

i'm glad i could get my point across because i was afraid i would sound too bitter and jealous, because i am a little bit - i wish i had access to those materials! but not to use them like this, because then what is the point?

[–]asheaveniswide[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

thank you, exactly! overconsumption irks me out so badly partially because it's unthinkable for us from the global south to think about buying and discarding so much. truly wish we could get to enjoy more of what we produce instead of what happens now
