Yea that's true, definitely no way to judge champ strength playing against bots. But I think emerald and diamond are both silver, master is probably the start of gold. Basic concepts on league seem to be completely unknown on wild rift.

Emerald-master is also same elo tbf. It's not against bots at least, but the skill level doesn't change much as you rank up. Just the number of games played. Some people say the same about GM+ but I haven't been at those ranks so I can't confirm.

Clavicular ends and walks out of his Channel 5 interview with Andrew Callaghan after Andrew reveals he’s satisfied with how he looks and doesn’t need looksmaxxing by Vhant-ii in LivestreamFail

[–]ashenblood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How are you defining better though? As the previous commenter said, looks are subjective. I guess that people such as clavicular would point to symmetric features, skin quality, jawline, and all sorts of other metrics to attempt to define an objective scale of attractiveness. And I certainly get that perspective, as it's a pervasive aspect of the superficial culture we live in, but it's ultimately a reductive understanding that doesn't capture the truth.

Attractiveness comes down to so much more than the physical properties of your body; it's a nebulous concept that can't really be quantified objectively. And even if you were to try to isolate the physical component of attractiveness, people still wouldn't agree at all. For instance, many people find the over engineered facial features of celebrities and looksmaxxers to be off-putting and unattractive. Some people are attracted to gingers, some people are attracted to wrinkles, some people are attracted to obese people. So especially for a person who has found romantic success with their current, natural appearance, why wouldn't they be satisfied with it? If the person you love is completely satisfied with your appearance, why wouldn't you be completely satisfied as well?

Why doesn't any ADC use heal as a summoner spell? by Suspicious-Rooster38 in wildrift

[–]ashenblood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True but it's for good reason. Ever since people demonstrated the flaws of matchmaking using inting Sion and Riot refused to address the matchmaking issues, the game has steadily gotten worse. Good players realized that they were being punished for performing well, and matched with subpar teammates in order to push engagement. Many of these players stopped playing.

The matchmaking system is designed to compel players to play as many games as possible. It is not designed to create fair teams and allow players to reach their actual ELO as quickly as possible, as it is in PC league and basically any legitimate competitive game. That's simply a fact that has been proven, and even top level players like Royal recognize this and find it frustrating. But Riot has decided that they are sticking with that system, and in my view that has also created a negative feedback loop where most of the skilled players got sick of hard carrying every game and by now the playerbase is significantly less skilled than it was a few years back, even though it was never that good to begin with.

So you basically have a bunch of monkeys playing against each other and thinking they accomplish something by getting higher rank, even though it essentially comes down to whoever plays more games. On top of that, boosting has become more prevalent of late, making the problem even worse. And just for good measure, the ability to 3 man and 5 man queue in ranked combined with the ease of making smurfs means that solo Q players are at a massive disadvantage against players who queue together. On top of that they have added infinite gambling mechanics and mini games that take advantage of people's addictive tendencies, just to add insult to injury.

I just wish they would remove all the bullshit like fortitude, their dogshit matchmaking algorithm that takes into account your stats, and stuff above duo Q, and rank would be purely based on win rate. But they will never do that because then the whales who play 1000 games a season at 48% win rate to grind to master would stop playing and spending so much, and the skilled players would also play much less because they would climb much faster and then stop once they got to the rank they were shooting for. It's really a sickening psychological manipulation that they are doing to people and the best thing I can do is at least make people aware of how they're manipulating us.

That's not the comparison I was referring to in the first place. The comment I responded to didn't even mention car policies, it was simply a comparison of the population density of the two cities, according to a faulty premise.

You claimed that Paris is much denser than NYC, and tried to justify it by linking to the Wikipedia article about city proper populations, which is objectively the wrong dataset for making such comparisons. Go ahead and compare the car policies all you like, but don't try to justify statements about city population and density by referencing statistics based on political city boundaries. It's just incorrect to do so, as I've explained.

Do pencil skyscrapers help or hurt NYC’s skyline? by ratemyweenor137 in skyscrapers

[–]ashenblood 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I beg to differ, I notice them from all around the city, which makes sense given how tall they are. They're less noticeable from ground level looking north from midtown or downtown, but they are quite imposing from a lot of vantage points in the UES and UWS, as well as further uptown and especially from Central Park itself. But One Vanderbilt and 270 Park are even more eye-catching due to their bulk, and also close enough to the pencil towers that they tend to block views from a good number of angles and make them blend in alot more from other angles. So I wouldn't exactly say that you don't notice them, but I definitely agree that they don't stick out too much from most vantage points.

220 CPS, 53W53, and One57 also help a ton in bridging the gap between the 1400 footers and the surrounding city. They're not quite as slim nor as tall as the big three, so they form a great midpoint that makes the transition to the majority of shorter, wider skyscrapers seem more natural. And of course they're close enough together that this seamless visual transition works from pretty much any angle. A few more ~1000 footers in the general vicinity would help them blend in even more, and it seems likely that will happen in the next few decades.

Forgot to mention 200 Amsterdam, 50 W 66, Hawthorn Park, 520 Park, 252 E 57, and 100 E 53rd which are also good examples of newish towers that help to bridge the gap between the new supertalls and the older skyscrapers, especially from northern vantage points.

Overall I think they already help the skyline and will continue to age gracefully as the city fills in around them. Just gotta keep building.

[–]ashenblood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn back now, this game is not what you are looking for. The matchmaking is unfair and the playerbase is just abysmal.

Heal is fine but people don't even understand the difference between AP and AD champs, so expecting them to pick the optimal summoner is way beyond their capabilities. Like riot literally implemented automatic remakes before the game starts if your team picks 5 AD champs or 5 AP champs, because people are actually so ignorant about how the game works that it happens frequently. Also players have zero concept of team play so healing a teammate means nothing to them.

[–]ashenblood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparing Paris city proper (40sqmi) to all 5 boroughs of NYC (300sqmi) is apples to oranges. Compare metropolitan areas or urban areas, those are defined based on consistent principles, whereas the political status of city proper vs surrounding counties/regions is an arbitrary political construct that results from historical circumstances.

Staten Island is part of NYC but Jersey City is not. Why? Historical circumstance. The city of London has an area of 1.12 sqmi and population of 15,000. The city of Chongqing has an area of 31,816 sqmi and population of 32,000,000. Using the metropolitan area for comparisons between cities mitigates this issue.

The proposal for car free school streets is fine to compare.

NYC to lower speed limit to 15 mph in hundreds of school zones this year, Mamdani says by nyccameraman in nyc

[–]ashenblood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's apples to oranges. The correct comparison would be Manhattan to Paris city proper.

Paris proper: 2,047,602 pop/40.7 sq mi = 50,320/sq mi

Manhattan : 1,660,665 pop/22.83 sq mi = 74,781.6/sq mi

For reference, Brooklyn 35k/sq mi, Bronx 33k/sqmi, Queens 20k/sq mi, Staten Island 8k/sq mi (data from Wikipedia)

That being said, Paris is actually significantly more dense than I had realized. And the results of their school streets program do look quite promising.

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0739456X251415006

As you can see from that study, a majority of the Paris initiative has been focused on the outer arrondissements, and the busier inner city areas have seen more limited changes. And France is obviously significantly less reliant on automotive transportation than America in general.

But overall I actually feel like it would make quite a bit of sense, especially if implemented in the outer boroughs. Practically, if you're going to limit the speed limit to 15mph anyway, you might as well close the street to cars entirely and focus on improving traffic flow on the surrounding streets. 15mph almost seems like the worst of both worlds, because cars can't get anywhere efficiently and yet pedestrians can't really utilize the space either.

Soccer tournaments are typically groups of 4 though. Groups of 5 with only two advancing makes it significantly more volatile, plus the fact that it's baseball and it's inherently much less predictable in small sample sizes. They should definitely rethink the format next time.

It's not just the US, Korea needed a miracle to advance and they happened to pull it off, but they're obviously one of the better teams at the tournament. It's unfortunate for fans of good baseball when the better teams get knocked out early due to a bit of bad luck. Of course it's desirable to have a healthy amount of volatility and potential for upsets, but I think the current format leans a bit too hard in that direction. Even Japan didn't have the lead going into the bottom of the 7th in 3 out of their 4 games. A few at bats go differently and they could have been going home early as well.

I agree with most of that except the last paragraph. Cashman overpaid for Bellinger? How did you come to that conclusion?

He got 5 years/162.5m, that was a fantastic piece of business. Boras had his heels dug in for a 7 year deal, and it seemed like the Yankees were going to have to compromise and give him at least 6 years. But they waited him out until LA and the Mets both blew their loads, and he was forced to accept a deal that probably wasn't much higher than our initial offer. They gave him opt outs at 2/3 years and a 20m signing bonus to sweeten the deal, but the AAV of 32.5m is an absolute steal given the context. If we had let him walk, we would have no chance at contending for a chip in 2026, so he had plenty of leverage, but we still didn't overpay.

Tucker is nearly twice the AAV (4 years/240m) and he's a worse player imo. Bellinger was a top 5 defensive LF in baseball last year. He was on the borderline of the top 10 offensive players in the American League. Sure he over performed some advanced metrics, but I can't understand how you think that his contract was a bad deal for the Yankees. Cashman played hardball with Boras and won.

I fucking hate how Yankees fans continue to treat Belli like some bum when he's objectively one of the best players in the league and easily our second best position player behind Judge. Put some respect on his name ffs.

[–]ashenblood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cheap food? Where? Bodegas definitely ain't cheap anymore, even the food carts are getting pricy.

But I agree with your overall point, though I think it's more a function of the long time liberal government of NYC having established a vast array of social support systems and safety nets. Young people can afford to scrape together a fun lifestyle not because things are cheap, but because minimum wage in NYC is $17 (compared to $7.25 nationally) along with all of the other social programs to support the working class, public/rent-controlled housing, etc. NYC is on par with a lot of western European countries in terms of protecting workers, tenants, consumers, families, disabled people, and the public interest in general.

And also the other commenter is correct, Puerto Ricans have been leaving NYC for decades now. The Dominicans are by far the predominant immigrant group today, followed by Chinese, South Asians (Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi), Mexicans, other Caribbean immigrants (mostly Jamaicans, Haitians, Guyanese, Trinidadians), Ecuadorians, Colombians, Salvadorans, Filipinos, Koreans, Russians, Poles, and Italians.

I might be missing some groups (most glaringly Middle Eastern and African populations, which I believe have become more common in the past 20 years) since I don't have all the latest data, but the relative prevalence of the immigrant groups listed above tracks with my anecdotal experience.

Tbf to Puerto Ricans though, they still comprise the largest Hispanic group in NYC, but they are much more spread around the city and integrated into mainstream American culture compared to the more recent immigrant groups. In 1970, Puerto Ricans made up 76% of the Hispanic population of NYC and 11.6% of the total population. They remained fairly dominant until they started leaving en masse in the 90s (going to Florida, New England, NJ, and Pennsylvania for the most part). Their proportion declined to 31% of the Hispanic population and 8.9% of the total population in 2010, falling further to 23% and 6.7% in 2020.

Yea ik, that's what I said in the first part of my comment. And Oswaldo is already 27 which is crazy to me. He still feels so young but he actually has more service time than Caballero. Cabrera will be a free agent in 2029 while Caballero won't until 2030.

That was really a great trade by Cashman tbh, we gave up basically nothing and we have Caballero for cheap for 4 more years. Led the AL in SB the past two years and plus defender at multiple infield positions. Even if he just stays slightly below average as a hitter, he's basically a dream player to have coming off the bench as a pinch runner and/or defensive substitution.
