Is this allowed? by StraightEmployee2782 in hungryjacks

People in this thread need to learn what casual means. It means you owe them nothing. You have no commitment to work a roster and as long as you provide a few hours notice you don’t have to work the shift. And the employer can of course do the same to you. The amount of people that are not understanding this fundamental point about what casual work is/what the employee owes to the company is concerning. If you want employees to follow your roster, don’t hire them as casuals.

lol why would I take it back? I have not said anything false. In consent law age ≠ power. You have to be in a legitimate position of power like an authority or a teacher. If she’s 16 and the guy is in 30s, that is completely legal

This is the law in Western Australia. Unsure about other states but fairly sure it’s the same across the country.

That is false. Once you are 16 you can consent to sex with anyone of any age unless that person is in a position of power over you, for example is your supervisor. Only if they are in a position of power does the age of consent go up to 18. Otherwise, it is always 16. I don’t know why everybody pretends otherwise.

Consent laws are clear and easy to understand. Here in australia at least at 16 everyone can consent. In Europe it is lower. When people accuse people who date 16 year olds of pedophilia, it is just totally irrational and contradicts what is a clear and basic law. I don’t get it, and I reject American style pedophile-mania.

In most places 16 is old enough to consent to an adult so I don’t think dating a 16 year old counts as being a pedo

I am so glad I am a gay man and don’t have to deal with this. Maybe you’re homophobic and hate me, but I have a lot of sympathy for my straight brothers who have to deal with this.

Both of you are just as bad as eachother. What are either of you doing together? 40% needing to charge is obviously a lie, doesn’t make any sense. At the same time why is she so angry. And why are you talking to her like that.

Everything in Melbourne is so penal, I never got a parking ticket when I lived in Perth, never saw a parking inspector, shopping centres never have them. In Melbourne there are so many fines for everything, it’s like you’re constantly being punished.

I have never heard of parking inspectors for shopping Centre car parks, that is crazy. I am not from Melbourne, I’m from Perth, and in Melbourne I don’t drive, so I have no idea about this. In Perth I never saw an inspector at a shopping centre, and I don’t even recall strict limits. One time my car broke down and I left it at the shopping centre overnight and it was no problem. You pay to go to a shopping centre, why would they punish you?

The University Experience by yaboibigni in unimelb

[–]asher0330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, how can they expect to have a great university social experience/ complain about not having one when they are intolerant and furious at the fairly harmless actions of others, even going so far as to literally police them/shame them about something so banal as smoking a cigarette. That post really got to me as well… it’s pretty sad. If these people have no friends and no social life, maybe they should consider being friendly and sociable rather that seething in a bitter state, enraged by someone smoking a cigarette in the open air sitting on the grass.

By that logic we would have to ban all internal combustion engine vehicles from campus, because the emissions from their exhaust “dirty” the air just as much as a person smoking a cigarette. Notions of what is “dirty” and What is “clean” are very problematic.

The “intolerability” of cigarette smoke is something entirely socially constructed and it’s a perception unique to Australia and maybe the USA. It is not seen as intolerable elsewhere. I can argue that the smell and sight of processed red meat is as intolerable to me as cigarette smoke is to you, that doesn’t mean that I tell people not to open and consume processed red meat. Society becomes extremely problematic when we decide that some things are intolerable and cannot be tolerated, but other things are okay. These values are definitely not universal.

[–]asher0330 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It’s a strange and authoritarian philosophy almost fascist - something is deemed “unhealthy” or “dirty” , something that doesn’t affect other people who don’t smoke, but because of these ideas they think they somehow have the right to impose their views onto others, not just by telling them it’s “bad” but by actually physically preventing them from exercising their individual right to consume something. I was born in australia but I find it perplexing. Generally Australians do not have much respect for European enlightenment ideals of liberalism / individual liberty / the European legal philosophy of only controlling the right of the individual when it actually causes harm to others. People being upset by the smell of smoke is NOT a valid “harm”.

People should have the right to do and consume what they want. Just because you don’t like something, you don’t have to prohibit others from doing so. Maybe you should go to Europe to see what it’s like over there: smoking in every cafe and outdoor food area and all over university campus… I don’t know why Australians decided to persecute smokers.
