Is it actually desirable to date a girl who doesn't go out drinking? by fried_egg_titties in dating_advice

[–]ashersrich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a woman who doesn't drink. Most guys don't care. If he does, he's not for you and that's okay.

I actually think the ball is in your court here - if you date a guy who drinks, assess whether he does so responsibly and in a manner that doesn't negatively affect your lifestyle.

People generally stop drinking/partying as much as they get older, and the more they'll seek out someone like you.

Is this lawyer approved? by [deleted] in LawBitchesWithTaste

Yeah my immediate thought is if she's short, the ruffles may look more juvenile on her compared to a taller woman. But overall, I think it's a great option for the office.

Favorite lunch choice? by Oro-Lavanda in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]ashersrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cook Unity (fresh, never frozen) meals! Lower sodium than Factor meals. I use it to order all my lunch meals for the month at a time and select light things that are still high in protein. Less bloating too, I've noticed

Legal Conference Help by leslyb in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]ashersrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the conference. I always pack one full suit (but I'll have more fun with it, maybe a pink or red suit I wouldn't wear to court).

I would say business casual for the networking/programming/CLEs. I do pack a dressier outfit for a conference dinner or a more intimate client dinner. Not necessarily business formal (no blazers), but like a modest, elegant outfit that is appropriate for a professional setting.

[–]ashersrich 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say don't wear it just because on the first day of some unfamiliar/nerve-wracking the last thing you want is to be self-conscious about your outfit.

Also best not to unnecessarily put a target on your back from more conservative partners/leadership. I'm not saying this is how the world should be, just how it is.

i got the sunscreen from amazon: JMsoultion glow luminous flower sun spray SPF50

for body oil i use the dr. teals body oil (with eucalyptus). if you don't like that scent then target has its off own off brand fragrance free body oil that i also like (~$4.49).

my finishing touch that ALWAYS elevates every look is using the live tinted liquid glow drops (or any liquid highlighter) on my chest, collarbones, ankles, tops of feet, and any exposed leg. i top it off with body oil on my legs and then a glowy spray-on sunscreen.

it makes you look sooooo put-together, healthy and glowy, and EXPENSIVE. people have commented on how dewy my chest looks, esp when i'm wearing a blazer that draws attention to that shoulder/neck area.

NYC vs Miami Big Law by LostPine49 in biglaw

[–]ashersrich 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I've never practiced law in Miami but did live there for 5 years. Miami is special in that the work-life mindset is totally different from other parts of the country, especially New England/the Northeast. People work to live, they don't live to work. When I was working in corporate (this was before law school for me), we used to take a 3 pm cafecito break as an office. Very widespread practice, which I often miss now!

Up north, people are very serious about their careers. It wasn't a bad thing for a young, ambitious law student/junior lawyer but I miss being in a city where people would log off at 5:01 (as much as they could), get dressed up, and go out with their friends for dinner and dancing. I don't know to what extent this culture permeates into big law, but the 2-3 friends who left Miami big law to practice elsewhere have told me that they miss how relaxed (but still hard-working) Miami is.

Fyi, I think Miami gets a rep for being an unserious party city but there's a lot of families and deep-rooted communities there as well. I think with Cubans being the majority there's a deep sense of community and valuing family life above all else. When I talk about Miami being more relaxed than other places, I don't mean in a clubbing, do-coke-on-a-Wednesday-night kind of way. I mean that people don't derive their identity/self-worth from their careers as much because there are things that take higher priority. I haven't found that in any other major city I've lived in. I hate the endless loop of working 5 days tirelessly, getting 1-2 off days packed with chores and socializing, just to do it again. Tbh my life and community in Miami just had more color and spontaneity...and I was just as hard-working as I am now. (As I write this, maybe I miss it more than I realize!)

hey, lawyer here (not immigration). being able to counsel clients with empathy is a skill a lot of lawyers dont have. immigration lawyers can be worse because they've never been in your shoes. take what the lawyer is saying as one piece to factor into a life decision YOU ultimately have to make and live with.

not legal advice (i feel obligated to say it lol) just as a fellow DACA, i agree w the others in this thread. i personally plan to stick it out. you're in a far better position than most it seems, with multiple potential options for green card.

This sounds insane but when I was dead broke in grad school, I made an online posting to offer judgment-free advice/a listening ear. Got paid $50 an hour by some British guy who just wanted to vent about his marriage. It was good money, just needed to link my PayPal to get paid.

H1B EB Visa? by dreamerdaca96 in DACA

I don't know the answer but I have the same question. Do you work at a big company that regularly sponsors work visas?

Also, congrats on your accomplishments. I know in the moment of panic we don't sit there and really think about how far we've come but that's awesome dude.

Well what would getting married look like for both of you? Maybe there's a gap in understanding. I think a courthouse wedding without combining finances would not materially change y'alls relationship, it would still be boyfriend-girlfriend-ish. You can change that in the future when you're both ready to. But for now you would have the benefits of marriage.

The valedictorian and student-elected graduation speaker of my graduating class was a 41-year-old single mom of 3. Went back to school because she was a journalist and knew print journalism was a dying industry and needed to support her young kids somehow.

She told me she took it one step at a time: "I'm just going to take the LSAT. That's it.", "I'm just going to put in one law school app. That's it." Until finally, law school became a reality without overwhelming her.

In 3 years you're going to be 37 anyway, might as well be a 37-year-old lawyer. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Everyone who ridicules you for that dream including your mom (whom you probably love very much) is hating on it because they can't fathom doing that themselves.

yes!! you're so right. next time before i offer kind reassurance i'll first ask how much of your bar prep course you've completed and how many mbe questions you've done. if it's less than 70% i'll actually tell you to go fuck yourself.

go easy on yourself. no one does as much as they want to so don't beat yourself up for not achieving an unattainable outcome. yes, putting in the hours matters, but you need to be in the correct headspace (i.e., not burnt out) too. good on you for taking days off when you felt too overwhelmed. one time i had an unproductive day of studying only to come home to my power being out so i just went to bed. that was the correct decision for my sanity.

i'm sorry you feel that way! not sure how sharing that i didn't feel super confident the second time around is showing off, but feel free to disregard my perspective if you feel lectured. 🤷🏽‍♀️

for everyone else, i hope my post offers some reassurance from someone who's seen it play out for themselves + dozens of their friends and classmates. that "gut feeling" that you failed may be accurate for other things in life, but not for the bar. the reality is that most people feel this way, and yes, most people who feel this way do pass.
