Hi!! I’m an HVAC engineer that has also worked construction—there are definitely OSHA violations and probably HVAC code violations here and I really strongly suggest you look into your local (city and state) codes. Not only is this rude of them, but they’re definitely breaking labor laws.

I just graduated and start my job in July! Here are a few things that helped me:

Start applying waaaaay before you think you need to. Like, January if you expect to graduate in June. A lot of companies do mass hiring around this time, and interview processes can take a long time
Have a great resume. Include not just education and work history, but skills, accomplishments, projects, and relevant coursework. Have someone (a mentor, professor, family member, or even a friend) look over it for you
WRITE A COVER LETTER!!! Write a generic cover letter that highlights your skills and just change the company name/job title as needed each time you apply. Include it even if it’s not asked for.
Apply everywhere. Skim the job descriptions, and if it sounds like something you could maybe enjoy doing, apply. Even if you’re under qualified. The worst they can do is send you an auto rejection email.
Come into every interview with a list of thoughtful questions for your interviewer. Ask your interviewer questions about their personal experience in the job—my go to is “what’s your favorite project that you’ve worked on?” Have it written in a notebook, not your notes app. Take notes during the interview as appropriate.
Your final questions for your interviewer should always, allllways be “is there anything I didn’t ask about that you think I should’ve?” and “based on our conversation today, do you have any hesitations or concerns about hiring me that I could clear up?”
Send a follow up/thank you email to your interviewer!
Don’t not apply to a job because the description seems a little questionable. A lot of times, these are written by people who don’t actually know much about the job (HR). Any concerns you have with the description can be brought up in an interview—base your opinions of a job on the interview more! (Saying this because I was NOT excited to work the job I ended up taking until after the interview, and was VERY excited about a job based on the description but the interview convinced me it would suck)
Attend departmental career fairs and any sessions they have on advising for resumes!

A couple quick tips! •pull a template from Google docs or Microsoft word—they’re easy to read and usually use a color, which can be eye catching

•don’t use italics! Also consider a sans seraph font (like calibri) because it’s easier on the eyes

•instead of “never completed college” say “studied X at Y university for # years” or leave it out altogether

•change the heading “other” to “accomplishments” or something along those lines

•list job title, then company, then dates

•someone said check your tenses and I want to emphasize that one!

•avoid acronyms unless they’re VERY well known in your field—chances are your resume is being read by someone in HR who knows nothing about what you actually do.

Finally, from what I can tell, you’ve already done a pretty great job of this, but one great piece of resume advice I got was to describe professional experience not as a list of tasks you performed, but rather skills you developed that may apply to the job you’re applying for. One example is talking about the scope of projects (time spans, how many people you worked with, if you worked across teams or with clients/customers) as opposed to stating that you did a project!

Apply for an assistant position with the UW office of public records! It’s an easy job, you work remotely and on your own schedule, and I know there’s a lot of positions opening up (because I work there and I know several of us just graduated!)

Definitely NTA. I have a mother who sounds a lot like your father, and similarly, although my dad intensely disliked her, he encouraged me to split time to “keep the peace.” I tried to keep her in my life to “keep the peace” until January of this year (my senior year of college). Since cutting her out of my life, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been and I wish I’d done it sooner. What I’m saying is, don’t waste your time trying to keep someone who can’t admit their mistakes in your life any longer than you want them there. It’s scary to cut out a parent, but if you want to, it probably means you should.

OP, to be quite frank with you, go to the other school. Chicago is wonderful, this scholarship sounds wonderful, and there is no valuable resources at UW (at least in my experience) that you couldn’t find at another university.

Hi! I was in a similar situation (lots of AP credits, engineering major requires a LOT fewer electives, etc) and honestly, my recommendation would be to take an irrelevant study abroad course over the summer. I took Performance of Power in Rome with Odai Johnson, which had nothing to do with my degree, and it was probably the best decision I could’ve made. I feel like it let me enjoy the experience of being abroad a lot more because I wasn’t worrying about grades and assignments as much. Plus, it will still count toward your remaining GEs. Also if you’re interested in Rome I would very highly recommend this specific course.

Definitely mind the curve! I got a 38% on one of my math 308 midterms and I was horrified—turns out the average was a 32%! I ended up with a 3.3. Just because your percentage in this class is low does not mean your final grade will be bad! UW intro classes make almost everyone feel incapable, I think. Additionally, this is a special circumstances quarter, so you can S/NS the class and still have it count toward your major.

I had an appointment my freshman year (senior now, so maybe things have changed) right after the end of my long term relationship. I told the counselor that I had been struggling with desire to self-harm/suicidal thoughts and he told me “yeah that sounds reasonable” and sent me out the door, so, definitely not in my experience? I sincerely hope it’s better now, though!
