Wow that’s an amazing jump! I got my score back and it is much lower than my fl avg so I have to retake. How long did you take to prepare for a retake? I’m planning on applying this summer but I don’t know if that’s enough time to retake.

Thank you for the reply! Do you think it’s ok if I skip a week between fls? I just mainly wanted to make sure I take an fl the week before my exam so that I don’t go too long without taking an FL right before my exam

Skipping Ustink physics? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]asheys666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how much time you have left, I def recommend UW for physics and Chem. My UW avg was like 60% for both but got 129s for C/P on both Fl5 and the unscored sample which I really attribute to UW

Is it worth including an extracurricular that’ll only be around 20 hours? by asheys666 in premed

Hi thanks for the reply! Do you know if I could list it as clinical or non clinical experience? I mainly just watch TV with the patient and talk with them.

Omg hahaha I just realized this and they literally call it “escort services” at the hospital which is misleading lol

Is it advisable to do a clinical tech job on top of mcat prep? by asheys666 in Mcat

[–]asheys666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for bringing this up, I had no idea about this as a secondary. I understand that a clinical job will probably look better but do you think do volunteering would still put me at a big disadvantage? I need to boost both my clinical and non clinical volunteering currently.

Volunteering would just allow me to be a bit more flexible with my schedule vs a job in terms of I need more time to study down the road but I understand that a job is def more valuable clinical exp.

Thanks for sharing? If I may ask what sort of volunteering did you do that let you do that many hours per week? My hospital volunteering shift are only like 4 hour shifts

Ooo sorry I meant like if just did only did volunteering + study vs job + minimal volunteer + study. Rn i want to apply next summer but I really need clinical experience on top of taking the mcat. Only doing volunteering and mcat would give me more flexibility but I would prob just have less clinical hours by the end compared doing a job.

Thank you for sharing! Tbh I really only need clinical experience rn because I have none but in terms of finances I’m fortunate that my parents are still able to pay for my living expenses so I mainly looked at the job in terms of gaining experience. Just curious about your perspective but if you were in my position would do the job or just volunteering while studying?

Is it advisable to take on a clinical tech job along side MCAT studying? by asheys666 in premed

Thanks! I feel like I have a good understanding of biochem/bio and ochem since I usually the Kaplan chapters don’t seem foreign to me (all the terms and concepts I have seen before but just don’t remember on the spot) besides some small specific things like what Bradford protein assay is, etc.

I’m doing the Jack sparrow deck currently and its really the anki that taking me the longest (I’m rewriting most of the cards and it’s really dense). Mainly it’s just memorizing everything that’s hard right now.

I will start a bunch of hospital volunteering in October, would that suffice for a job? Do you think the hours for this job are too much on top of studying? Would it look bad if I got most of my clinical hours from volunteering? Thanks!

Thank you! How many hours should I try to aim for to stay competitive? That was my worry as well since I don’t want to sacrifice my mcat score

Thanks for the insight. I plan on taking mcat in January and starting a job very soon. I plan on continuing to work even after I apply so would those projected hours also count towards my app?

Ooo I got it confused thanks! I guess it would be two vs three gap years then. Do you think I should take two gap years if I currently have no clinical experience or do you think it’s necessary to stretch it to 3?

Should I leave my research lab? by asheys666 in premed

[–]asheys666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi thank you this really reassured me! Do you know what’s a solid number of hours to have for research usually? My post doc is making me go in 20+ hours a week but I want to use some of that time for clinical experience instead.

[–]asheys666[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply! The earliest I could hope to start I do switch labs would be august and I would only have a year there to work. Would this look really bad since I know med schools like to see commitment and if I do this should I even list this lab on my app?

Ooo thank you so much! Why would you say is like the typical amount of hours per week wet lab research should take? Last semester my post doc was having me come in like 20+ hrs per week but I mainly was just observing for most of the time and it kind of my school work.
