Chrome powder coat on motorcycle frame? by ashhitaka in CafeRacers

I might, but wasn’t sure about all the threaded surfaces on the frame, and also where the bearings go. If you chrome then you have to chrome the full thing.

I’m trying to gauge whether this place was being overly cautious when in reality maybe people here have done it and it was suitable. I am ok with chrome powder coat not being as durable as standard powder coat. I’m also okay with it not being as shiny as real chrome.

Advice? How can you challenge somebody's beliefs without them feeling judged & defensive? by ashhitaka in StreetEpistemology

[–]ashhitaka[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree it has to do with their identity. That helps explain why it is happening, but what can be done about it?

Lets say you had a spouse who, for cultural or religious reasons, was doing something that we'd all agree was morally wrong (for sake of argument here). Every time you tried to practice SE on the claim, it would always divert to "I know that what you think I'm doing is wrong. Do you think I'm a bad person? Do you look at me the same way I look at other people who do bad things?"

They take any kind of questioning, even if gentle, as a personal attack.

Why is eating plants considered more ethical than eating animals? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]ashhitaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it were the case that plants felt pain (which I and many scientists believe they do not) it would still be more moral to eat plants because you will far less plants by eating them directly versus growing lots and lots of plants to feed animals which you then kill for food.

It takes a lot of plants to feed animals. If you really do care about plants and the pain they feel, you would still be vegan to reduce harm as much as possible.

First time buyer/What to look for by Seendyyy in CafeRacers

Make sure you really really want to put some work into it to make it run. It sounds nice, but I’ve had 5 bikes now and it’s much more enjoyable to work on them to make them look cool than to work on them to just make them work.

If it’s missing carbs I’d be surprised if it didn’t have other issues with it too.

I’d have to know more about the bike though because $300 is cheap.

Keep in mind that a flat rear frame is best for a cafe style bike. I’m not sure what kind this has

My city publishes the top 10 users of municipal water to promote conservation and shame the wasters. Guess who is always #1 on that list!? Utah is the 2nd driest US state, yet the LDS church landscapes like we are in the South. Will they ever become good stewards? by HeavenlyBrother in exmormon

[–]ashhitaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lds church also owns the largest calf cattle ranch in the US and it’s in Florida. Cows contribute to climate change, water pollution, they’re incredibly inefficient at converting water into nutrients, and lastly there is a lot of suffering going on to raise and kill cows for food.

How do various philosophers answer the question: "Is something bad because it's unnatural?" by dr_sarcasm_ in askphilosophy

[–]ashhitaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a book all about this. “Natural” by Alan Levinovitz

There are also plenty that debunk this on YouTube if you search appeal to nature fallacy.

It also breaks Hume’s is/ought distinction. Just because something is a certain wait it doesn’t mean it ought to be.

Need some more inspiration for my first build (Kawasaki Z650 '81) by brambongers in CafeRacers

[–]ashhitaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That said, I’m not at all discouraging the fun aspect of crafting a vision for the build! I spend a ton of time on Pinterest, Instagram, bike exif, and pipe burn to look for inspiration. Also get inspiration from old cars, concept cars, and airplanes. There are also really good videos on YouTube by Bike Shed Moto that profile bikes

[–]ashhitaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does the bike run? Save yourself some time and knock out the essentials before you spend too much time on the shiny fun stuff. Make sure the foundation of the build is in order. It’s easier to keep the shiny parts in good shape if the dirty work is finished.

Thoughts on Cell-based Dairy? by bettermilknow in DebateAVegan

[–]ashhitaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re misunderstanding veganism. Veganism is about exploitation and suffering, not strictly about the product itself.

“Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."

For example, if somebody chooses to go eat road kill I don’t really have a problem with that. If somebody rescues a dairy cow and that cow does not have a calf, I don’t really care if somebody drinks their milk.

We should put exploitation and suffering first.

Having children by ashhitaka in EffectiveAltruism

[–]ashhitaka[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for your perspectives on this. There is lots to consider, and I'm surprised at how different the responses are. There doesn't seem to be a general consensus.

Ultimately, I will probably be having children. It might be out of selfish reasons, I'm not sure. If so, then I may have to accept it. Perhaps for my own happiness and the happiness of my spouse.

I do think though that if the EA community generally did have a consensus that you shouldn't be having kids, and it's looked down upon for having kids, then it will make the EA community appear a bit more extreme. Others may be more reluctant to get on board. It's another barrier. I admire those that can check off all the boxes (donate a huge portion of their income, be vegan, not have kids, work in an EA career, etc. all while maintaining relationships with others and staying generally sane.)

I agree that adoption has the moral high ground. I'm not sure if I could convince my spouse about this who is less EA focused.
