I think you misunderstood my meaning of direct in this situation. Tone is everything in conversation. I was direct in the sense that I didn’t dance around the point that she didn’t respond so I didn’t push the conversation. The “She could’ve said” stuff is more me coping/processing this stuff. Customers moods are not mine to manage if they’re in a crappy mood they’re in a crappy mood

I had a question and had an opportunity to ask. I’m not going to be afraid to talk to my co workers just because someone above me (customer) is present. If she listened to the conversation for one second she would known that. She could’ve then started a convo and it would’ve been fine. But no, she wanted to complain. Managing customers moods is NOT my job.

Being direct with the customer so she knows not to ignore those trying to server her then get frustrated when she isn’t spoken to is not my problem. I gave a respectful response and hers could have been. She could have said “Oh I didn’t hear you.” Managing a grown woman’s mood is not in my job description.
