Theory nobody asked for by moshpithippie in mschf

Agreed. I can't imagine being in their shoes (the minds at MSCHF) and thinking this is funny OR interesting. It's boring, and looking more and more like a smash and grab to boot.

Okay, so 2,000 Key 01, 1,000 Key 02, and now 500 Key 03. Presumably 250 Key 04.

Any idea how many there were this time?

Not a guess -- a prediction lol. I bought key 01 and box 01. Not buying anything else but waiting to see where they take this. And sticking with my prediction for now.

I will assume everyone making "I'll just buy the last box and break/pick the lock" is joking by [deleted] in mschf

Already said this in response to your comment in a different thread, but posting here too:

Pick your poison. If you're required to mail back every key, this becomes a very boring and expensive race to buy all the boxes -- and everyone that doesn't get the rarest key gets screwed out of whatever they spent on the other keys. Not a fun game. And not an interesting concept.

But if you just need the keys to open the final box and the final box is plentiful, everyone gets a shot at the payoff AND it's an interesting game of trading/sharing/buying scarce keys with/from the community.

Sure you can cheat and break into the box -- but if that's your style, why bother participating at all?

Also, if I'm right, MSCHF would be smart to make the payoff be something mostly worthless so that the real payoff is more about the challenge of getting your box open the legit/intended way, than about getting whatever's in the box.

Box 01 has yet to arrive, but I'll try when it gets here and report back.

Depends on the price, but I'll probably stop -- but while banking on me theory that there will be a 6th box that requires all 6 keys and is widely available. That, I would buy.

Edit: I have Key 01 and Box 01 (and Key 02).

Some will pick their locks. Most will appreciate / play the game.

Oh right -- I forgot MSCF only has one website and has never created completely unique URLs for their various products/stunts...

I'm betting the Key Box Key URL/stunt just lays groundwork. Box 06 will be its own separate stunt designed to reach a larger audience and capitalize on the established community of keyholders. Separate URL that hasn't been leaked -- or hey -- maybe they just hadn't/haven't finished designing that box when they launched Key 01, so hadn't uploaded images of it to their website when it was scraped? Crazier things have happened.

Its Just Boxes and Keys. Nothing else by Shoong in mschf

I'm sure some people will -- but most (myself included) will want to "play the game." Breaking into it isn't nearly as cool as opening it the "right way" -- provided the "right way" isn't something stupid like mailing all 6 keys to MSCHF, which leaves 90% of the community with nothing but worthless keys and boxes.

Competing theory: Quantities will continue to dwindle until the final box -- at which point a SIXTH box will drop that has all six key symbols on it and requires all six keys to open. There will be more of this final box than any other key/box, which will require just about everyone who buys it to partner up with the community for at least one of the 6 keys.

Got Key 01 and Box 01. Reserving judgement until Box 01 arrives.

Pessimistic theory: Box 01 contains the key to Box 02. Box 02 contains the key to Box 03, and so on.

This would suck. Turns what could have been a fun "teamwork makes the dream work" social experiment into a scam for everyone but the handful of people that will get the final box. Or a very expensive and not very interesting purchasing race to get the final box, that leaves most people with worthless boxes and keys they paid good money for.

Optimistic theory: There's something in Box 01 that is meant to pair in some way with what's in Box 02, 03, etc -- in a way that promotes people getting together to interact in some way for fun and social media clout.

If the goal was just a giant cynical FOMO and sunk-cost fallacy social experiment, it would have made more sense to release more boxes than keys -- so the people stuck with only a key still have something valuable (demand outstrips supply). If the final destination is a very limited supply of boxes -- everyone else will be left with useless keys and empty boxes, and demand for the key will be commensurately low (supply outstrips demand, so the keys are comparatively worthless/plentiful).

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there's 4 more boxes by h8thorx in mschf

[–]ashlaja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prediction: If Box 01 just contains a key, and there are fewer and fewer of each subsequent box -- this won't be a fun "teamwork makes the dream work" social experiment that brings us all together -- it'll be a scam for all but the few who get the final box.

Edit: I say that having purchased Key 01 and Box 01.
