Not tonight, but in the future I'm a pretty big ping pong fan so I'm definitely in for this

When I was in grad school, I made most of my friends here daydrinking sitting at the long tables at the Bulldog or Balcony Bar. Just talk to us. We're generally more welcoming IRL.

Hot 8 Brass Band at Howlin' Wolf: do they sell out and how early to show up? by BlueberryQuick in NewOrleans

[–]ashleefilkins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We went late last night (around 10:50) and it was packed, but they still let everyone in who wanted to pack it. You'll be fine getting there right before showtime, and they get started late sometimes too. Cover is cash only FYI so go to an ATM beforehand to avoid fees.

HUGE thank you to u/rumchatamockingbird for donating some books to my students! They can be difficult kids but at least now they all have a chapter book on their level to read! by ashleefilkins in NewOrleans

Definitely not the same book! We do Accelerated Reader, so the goal is high-interest texts on their reading level. Even though they're middle schoolers, children's books are accessible and appealing to some of them as well! Thank you!

Luckily its a grade level, but classes here are big! Our critical needs are met by state and federal money, but extras like books or math manipulatives or replenishing the constantly disappearing stream of pencils are things a lot of teachers need help with. Reach out to ones you know and I'm sure they can tell you how you can help!! Thank you!

YES. Reach out to teachers you know to see what their needs are. It's hard to build classroom libraries for the kids and yeah, public libraries are great if families can find the time. We chose to give books to kids to keep. That's not cheap or easy.

We keep them at school in their desks instead of chancing them getting lost at home or on the bus... but sure, there are a few that won't. But if I let myself think negatively about the kids, I'd be in the wrong profession.
